The Miami Dolphins announced today the completion of head coach Joe Philbin's staff. The team hired four new coaches, and retained one more, to fill out a staff now consisting of 20 personnel to assist Philbin in hiw first year as a head coach.
Announced today was assistant defensive backs coach Blue Adams, defensive assistant Charlie Bullen, offensive assistant Ben Johnson, and assistant offensive line coach Chris Mosley. The team retained running backs coach Jeff Nixon.
Adams spent the past year working as the University of Northern Iowa defensive backs coach, following a year at Purdue as a graduate assistant. Adams played cornerback in the NFL, being selected in the seventh round of the 2003 draft by the Detroit Lions. He spent the 2003 season with the Lions and the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2004, he was optioned by the Chicago Bears to the NFL Europe's Rhein Fire, before playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2005 and 2006 seasons. His final season in the NFL was 2007 with the Cincinnati Bengals. In 2008, he attempted to make the Atlanta Falcons, but was released prior to the season, and 2009 saw him try out in the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes. He played four years at the University of Cincinnati, after graduating from Miami Senior High School in Miami, Florida.
A couple of days ago, the Miami Dolphins hired assistant coaches Phil McGeoghan and Lou Anarumo as they continue to build head coach Joe Philbin's staff. McGeoghan left his position as the USF wide receivers coach to take the Dolphins position as an assistant receivers coach. Anarumo was hired out of the Purdue defensive backs position, but it was not yet clear if he would be filling the same role with the Dolphins.
Today, the Dolphins officially announced both hires, appointing Anarumo as the team's defensive backs coach. They also added an additional assistant coach, Ken O'Keefe being hired as the team's wide receivers coach. O'Keefe has spent the last 13 seasons as the offensive coordinator at the University of Iowa.
When he was introduced as the Dolphins head coach, Philbin asked at his introductory press conference who his coaching influences were. He replied:
The Miami Dolphins have continued to add coaches to Joe Philbin's fledgling staff. The team announced today that they are retaining four more of former head coach Tony Sparano's staff, bringing the total number of retained coaches to seven.
The Dolphins will continue to employ defensive line coach Kacy Ridgers, assistant special teams coordinator Dave Fipp, defensive quality control coach David Corrao, and assistant strength coach Dave Puloka. They will join special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi, tight end coach Dan Campbell, and strength coach Darren Krein as members who are staying with the new coaching regime.
The Dolphins also brought George Edwards, who had served the last two years as the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator, back to the team to fill the same role he had under Sparano, linebackers coach.
Joining the Dolphins staff today are two new coaching hires:
The Miami Dolphins on Sunday continued to fill out the coaching staff of new head coach Joe Philbin. The team announced the hires of two coaches, as well as the team retaining three assistant coaches from last year. Today also came news of former interim head coach Todd Bowles had landed a new job.
The Dolphins announced the hiring of linebackers coach George Edwards and assistant quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor today. Edwards spent the last two seasons as the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator, after spending the firve years before that in Miami, coming back to resume his previous role with the franchise. He has also spent time on the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, and Dallas Cowboys coaching staffs in the NFL, as well as with the University of Florida Gators, University of Georgia Bulldogs, Duke Blue Devils, and Appalachian State Mountaineers staffs at the college level. He played linebacker for Duke in the late 1980s.
Taylor comes to Miami after having been a graduate assistant with Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman at Texas A&M Aggies. Taylor played college football at the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, starting for the team in 2005 and 2006, including an appearance in the 2006 Big 12 Championship game, and being named the 2006 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2007, but was eventually cut, and signed by the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Miami Dolphins agreed to terms with their new offensive and defensive coordinators, Mike Sherman and Kevin Coyle, respectively, yesterday. With the hirings, it's time to take a look at who exactly head coach Joe Philbin is bringing in to serve on his staff. After taking a look at offensive coordinator Mike Sherman yesterday, it's now time time look at defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle
Coyle began his college coaching career in 1978, after one year as a high school coach, as a graduate assistant at the University of Cincinnati. In 1980, he moved to Arkansas, where he served as a coaching assistant for one year, before moving on for a year at the US Merchant Marine Academy as the defensive coordinator.
The Miami Dolphins agreed to terms with their new offensive and defensive coordinators, Mike Sherman and Kevin Coyle, respectively, today. With the hirings, it's time to take a look at who exactly head coach Joe Philbin is bringing in to serve on his staff. First up is offensive coordinator Mike Sherman.
Sherman is currently 57 years old, being born and raised around the Boston, Massachusetts area, eventually earning a scholarship to Central Connecticut State University as a defensive end and offensive tackle. After he graduated college, Sherman became a high school English teacher and assistant football coach. He spent the the 1979 and 1980 at the Worcester Academy in Massachusetts, where he taught Philbin.
From 1981-1982, Sherman served as a graduate assistant for the University of Pittsburgh. During his time at Pitt, Sherman was unable to afford an apartment, and lived on a cot in the stadium. In 1983, he moved to Tulane as the team's offensive line coach.
He then moved to Holy Cross in 1985, serving as their offensive line coach until 1987, before becoming the team's offensive coordinator for a year. Sherman then was hired for his first stint with Texas A&M, serving as the team's offensive line coach from 1989-1993.
After a year at UCLA as an offensive line coach, Sherman returned to Texas A&M in the same role, serving their from 1995 to 1996.
The Green Bay Packers came calling in 1997, bringing Sherman to the NFL as a tight ends coach. He remained with the Packers until 1999, when he took over as the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator.
The hiring of former Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Sherman brings a ton of experience to the staff, a guy who has called plays before, and a guy with head coaching experience to share with Philbin. Former Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle brings 11 years of NFL coaching experience, and has had one of the top secondaries in the NFL for the last nine years.
Great hires for both positions.
Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin has spent the first few days of this week reviewing the current staff, along with interviewing potential candidates for his staff. The team seems close to landing Philbin's top choices for both the offensive and defensive coordinator positions - bringing over 60 years of coaching experience to the staff.
The Dolphins are poised to bring former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman in as the team's offensive coordinator. Sherman has spent the last four seasons as the head coach at Texas A&M, where he coached potential draft prospect Ryan Tannehill. Sherman was the Green Bay head coach from 2000-2005, during which time he hired Philbin, who had been a student in his high school English class at Worcester Academy in Massachusetts, to be the team's assistant offensive line coach. Philbin and Sherman have remained friends ever since.
Sherman had been considered a finalist for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach position, only to see the position filled by former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano. Sherman spent yesterday with Philbin in Miami, discussing the position.
