Are We Next Year's 49ers?

I am 24 years old. I have been watching football since the season Marino retired. I missed the glory days of the 70's. I missed Marino at his prime. I was able to watch some videos of the past eras of Miami Dolphins football and observed closely. I witnessed the way Csonka bulldozed through defenders, how decisive and precise Marino was.

There truly was a different culture. Dolphin fans filled the stands and it seemed as though we had a home field advantage at one point. It gave me chills seeing how dominate we were. Times have changed and will continue to do so, as this is a new era for Miami Dolphins football, which started with our new coaching staff.

As easy as it is to be negative and pessimistic regarding the Dolphins, I believe we are next years 49ers. With an already a good defense, we improve our secondary and get a pass rusher on the opposite end of Wake. At that point we will transition from good to great.

It's safe to say that our starting QB will most likely be either Manning, Flynn, or Moore. Less likely to be Luck, RG3 or Tennehill. Worst case scenario is we start Moore. I'm actually pretty comfortable with this move. That is, if we have no other options, but I'd prefer an upgrade. Alex Smith played in 4 more games and barely had better stats than Moore and look where they made it this year.

Player Att Comp Yds Comp % Yds/Att TD
INT
Long Sck Sck/Lost Rating

Moore 347 210 2497 60.5
16
9 2.6 65 36 229 87.1

Smith 445 273 3144 61.3 17
5 1.1 56 44 263 90.7

Nearly every year there is a team that plays poorly one season, then turns it around the following year and makes a deep run into the playoffs. It's just a matter of perspective. Do you want to believe we are next or not?

Hollywood's 2012 Offseason

Like many of us the time between the Superbowl and the Combine, Prodays, Free Agency and Draft seems like an eternity. I have been doing a bit of reading in the meantime and have come up with my own picture of an off season for our beloved Miami Dolphins. First I will try to tackle free agency. (That is no illusion to us picking up a tackle.) Then I will try and cover a few rounds of the draft.

As most of us have realized, QB is the most important piece of the puzzle. Something that has eluded the Dolphins since the Dan the Man Marino retired. And lets face it, ground and pound offenses just come up short in a league where the rules have been changed to protect Tom Brady. (Insert sarcasm here) Now most of us, myself included, have our reservations about both the top Free Agent QB's. Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn. I think Flynn maybe a good QB but I don't see him as great. If Flynn comes here it will be on Philbin's say so, and I see Ross too far gone on Peyton to really consider this. However this is our second option should Peyton go elsewhere. However I do believe Peyton comes to Miami. We have wonderful weather for rehabilitation and he will see another great opportunity to go up against Brady/Belichick twice a year, as well as many believe Miami to be a few short steps away from being a REAL contender. Plus the Wife likes Miami a lot and they already own a condo here and have friends in the area. (Those kind of intangibles are not on any contract.) Speaking of contracts, Peyton has already said he is willing to take a low money guarantee contract. Which is another reason he is more appealing than Flynn who will be looking for his first big Pay Day.

QB-Peyton Manning

With the injury riddled Manning we need a little more insurance for him. Bringing me to our next Free Agency need O-Line. Miami would be amiss to think it is fine on O-line, but I don't see another lineman in our first round future. (Ireland would need to triple his security staff) I think we take the plunge and grab Ben Grubbs. That moves us around a little bit and makes our O-line look as follows:

(From left to right)

Long, Grubbs, Pouncey, Ingognito, Murtha/Jerry

Another possible splash I would like us to make in Free Agency is WR and I think we may be able to pull in Reggie Wayne on the cheap if Peyton is here. I know he is old but another outside threat across from Marshall as a stop-gap til next year is always good.

SB Nation 2012 Mock Draft

Greetings Phinsider, P_Roach17 here from Bleeding Green Nation attempting to organize a SB Nation-wide mock draft. After a disappointing season for my Birds, and being less than thrilled with having to watch the Giants win the SB, i'm left with a football void at my core. So, as a result, I'm turning to the rest of SB Nation to satisfy not only my football needs, but the needs of others who are on the outside looking in during this 2011 postseason. You will of course be representing the Miami Dolphins, who currently hold the 8th overall pick in the 2012 draft, as I'm sure you all know. Your cooperation in this poll is greatly appreciated. Note: I would like for this poll to reflect the fans choice, not necessarily who you think your team will draft. Now for a few quick rules.

With the 8th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft the Miami Dolphins select...

In reallity, we should have won 2-3 SuperBowls Late 80's early 90's

I mean we had the goods, 1 of the Very best QB. Wow it blows my mind to think Tony Paige & sammy smith got the job done grantit no Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown. But with them U dont even make the Playoffs. There not losers, enuff said. Crist as i look back, that entire offense should have gone to the probowl. The year was 1990, were we hung back then. Jimaney crickets man can we even come close to the tallent, that was on that squad. QB. wize i'm just not sure, if my enjoyment was watching a NFL football team play on a sunday afternoon. It was watching Miami post 40 or so points & just watch the other side of the field squerm uncontrollable to the point of puking, in this hot florida sun. I've got some realy kickin pictures here just don't rightly no how to get them in!

Some clarity on Peyton's injury

There is way too much misinformation on Peyton Manning's injury.

First of all, a little history.

According to Dungy and Manning, Peyton received his initial neck injury in a game against the Washington Redskins on Oct. 22, 2006. Dungy recalled that " Manning's neck was wrenched and his helmet ripped off when he took a hit by Andre Carter followed by a hit from Phillip Daniels". The hits were legal so do not read anything into that.

When Manning got up he shook his right arm " as if to get the feeling back into it". Peyton took a time out and told the back up QB to be ready. Peyton went on to throw for 244 yards and three TD's in the second half. According to Irsay and Dungy the neck would get aggravated over the next few years but nothing really abnormal.

But, in September of 2010 it was reported that Peyton had been injured sometime before week one. That is when the disc in his neck began to do nerve damage. Manning struggled with pain throughout the 2010 season. He admitted to not having as much throwing strength as usual. This resulted in his decreased production: 91.2 passer rating, 4700 yards, 33 TD's and 17 Int. (hell of a season for an injured QB).

Peyton's first two surgeries were more noninvasive in an attempt to keep the disc from doing damage to the nerve. The fusion was done on the third attempt and was successful. Two of the countries leading neurosurgeons, along with the Colts neurosurgeon have cleared Peyton to play in the NFL again. This relates completely to the fusion itself. Not the nerve regeneration that is subsequent to the fusion surgery.

Peyton is no more likely to "break his neck and be paralyzed" than anyone else in the league. The fusion does not make his neck "weaker", it just may be a little less mobile. Only time will tell. The discs are fused and healed and no longer do damage to the nerve, which is what has caused the loss in arm strength.

The question now is, when and if the nerve will completely heal. This process can take from a few months to a year. The fact is, a study was done on this very issue in regards to NFL players who have had disc herniation's and nerve damage. According to the Spine Orthopedics,Aug. 2010, 72% of NFL players who underwent surgery for disk herniation and resulting nerve damage returned to play, on average for 2.8 more years. The non-surgery group returned to play for just 1.5 years.

In an interview with Joe Montana, Joe said he underwent fusion surgery in 1986 and was told many of the same things Peyton has by so many around him- just retire. Montana underwent his surgery and went on to win Super Bowls 23 and 24, was MVP in 1989, Super Bowl MVP and led his team to two 14-2 regular seasons. And all of this after disc fusion surgery.

According to Peyton and those around him he is getting strength back in his arm. Both Reggie Wayne and Joseph Addai took some reps from Manning and agreed that he was getting more zip on the ball. It could still take several months to find out if Peyton will be in that 72% club and get back to full strength.

The Colt's do not have the luxury of waiting to find out as they have to make a decision before March 8th and a 28 million dollar bonus they would have to pay Manning. It's not going to happen and Peyton will become a free agent.

The rest of the NFL has more time to see how Peyton is doing. The fact is the odds are in Peyton's favor. He is already getting his strength back and there is a three out of four chance his nerve will heal completely. If so, I believe Peyton has at least three more years of Manning level football left in him, maybe more. He may be 36 but other than this neck injury he was the least sacked QB in the league his entire career. He has never taken the kind of punishment other older QB's have endured.

I would also add that Peyton may be the smartest most cerebral QB in history. I believe he can adjust his game as he gets older and still be just as dangerous. Kinda like Michael Jordan when he could no longer dunk a ball from the free throw line. He just invented the fade shot and won more titles.

If Peyton's nerve completely heals, a team in need of a franchise QB would be nuts not to go for him. Just my two cents.

TE....Problem Solved???

OK, so while everyone is wrapped up in QB talk, DE, RT, FS, TE drafting I want to stop and figure something out. Do we have 1 decent TE and 2 decent FBs or do we have 2 decent TEs and 1 FB? Some of you may already know were I am going with this....Charles Clay. The way I see it if we put and KEEP him at TE we take care of two birds with one stone. We'll leave Hillard at FB, have Slaton (backup FB), Thomas, Bush at RB. By putting Clay at TE we don't need to draft a TE in the draft and are free to use our 1st pick as necessary. [trade up, trade down, take DE] I really believe this is something we need to look into, unless Clay can't play TE then why did we take him? He did make some great catches last year and when healthy looked like a great pick, however under this new Offense TEs will be a premium relief valve so we need someone good and if it isn't Clay what do we do with him?

"Peyton, Peyton, Peyton!"

Personally I'm not 100% sold on the idea of Manning in Miami. If it were to happen I would not be upset at all but I wouldn't be overly excited about either, at least not until I saw him in live game action. With that said, let us look at some of the positives as well as negatives we would be facing if Peyton were to indeed bring his talents to South Beach.

Is there a reason Don Strock is not being considered for head coach

Is there a reason why Don Strock is not being considered for the head coaching position for the Miami Dolphins football team I thought he did a pretty good job playing football and work side-by-side with Don Shula to me it seems like he would make a good choice and it seems like no one else is doing very good so why not give him a chance you never know he might be just what the doctor ordered I think it would be at least worth looking to see if this is a possibility and this is one fan's opinion I've been a Miami Dolphins fan for a long time and I would love to see this team back in the Super Bowl again. no matter who we get I will always support the team

Ricky Ran Ricky Ran

I am surprised this isn't here yet, but according to Jason LaCanfora from NFL, Ricky Williams at the young age of 34 has decided he will once again retire from football. I also found a link on ABC News.

I was saddened that Ricky wouldn't be finishing his career here the Dolphins, but I will tell you, he will always be a Dolphin to me. He has been one of my favorite players for years.
