Not that this comes as a surprise to anyone who follows the Miami Dolphins, but a South Florida Sun-Sentinel story today is citing multiple sources as saying the Chad Henne era in Miami is officially over. According to the Omar Kelly report, the Dolphins will not be offering a contract to their one-time quarterback of the future.
Henne is 13-18 as a starter with the Dolphins, and missed most of last season following a separated shoulder on his non-throwing side. His contract expires with tthe start of the new league year on March 13, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Asked durnig his Senior Bowl media availability about the future of Henne, Dolphins genegral manager Jeff Ireland responded, "Chad has done what we've asked him to do. I like Chad personally very well. He's very smart. Very intelligent. Very tough. A football guy. He loves being around the game and is a very good teammate. But this football team didn't win enough games when he was quarterback here. But that doesn't mean he did everything wrong, or right. If he goes somewhere else, Chad's a good football player. He can play in this league."

The Dolphins have had 16 starting quarterbacks over the past 12 seasons, the most over that span in the NFL.

I do think Henne made some improvement, but he is still god awful. He do good as a backup though…I think

I would like to point out that you must first posses something before having it stolen from you.

There is a god

Media just needs something to report, we all knew this in Week 3

I'm admittedly not a Henne Fan...
so I’m happy to hear the news. I’ll just say, Thanks Chad for trying and best of luck on the next gig, wherever or whatever that may be.
Bill Moody - February 21, 2012
I think he just lacked the burning desire that great QB's have.
Overall I don’t dislike him as much as others, I’m really curious what he would have done with a decent OC. With better play calling I think he would have been a better QB. For great QB’s losing is not an option and with Henne it just seemed like he was okay with it.
rtantalo - February 21, 2012
Chad Pennington
didn’t seem to mind the play calling, neither did Matt Moore. GO AWAY HENNE, and DONT COME BACK!!
Daniel Suarez - February 21, 2012
Desire?
I think he lacked overall accuracy and field vision.

Get off Henne's back
Chad was the ONLY part of this team that was doing anything decent the first 4 games he started. If anyone actually cares to remember those games in depth he was actually playing really well. We just had the worst defense in the league at the time (600+ yards to patsies allowed) and a reciever who dropped twice as many TDs as he caught. Reggie Bush looked bad and the coaching staff doing everything wrong. Henne doesn’t deserve all the hate he gets, especially if u go off the first 4 games of this season.

To little to late
Uncletouchufunny - February 21, 2012
THIS
I agree. He did look pretty decent. And not the pretty decent we had seen the last couple seasons, a more better (?) pretty decent than his previous pretty decent (?) play. But yea, haha I feel he does need a change of scenery though. Sometimes its just what a player needs to be successful
tylerrr - February 21, 2012
Not a Henne hater, I actually thought he was turning a corner at the beginning of the season
but it was just not enough to save him, good luck chad, wherever you end up, and can i get any money back for my # 7 jersey?
daytonadolfan - February 21, 2012
Agreed.
I think he’s probably better than a few starting QB’s out there (Orton). New OC, new receiver, he may look great…but he could also look like crap
beneny - February 21, 2012
Agreed
Henne was actually better, individual stat wise, than he got credit for. He had better numbers than Sanchize, better than Orton, better numbers than Tebow, better than Grossman, just to name a few. He had better capabilities than half the QB’s in the league. He’s STILL fairly young and inexperienced for a QB. 31 games started….that’s rather inexperienced. It’s just a shame that pro sports are a “what have you done for me lately” atmosphere.
And to add to your Henne was the ONLY bright spot those first 4 games, lets not forget HOW Henne was hurt…a botched play by the running back, in which Henne tried turning it into a decent situation.
I hope Henne gets a chance to start somewhere and makes the probowl next season…as long as it isn’t with the Jets. There’s a lot of teams out there, including us, that could benefit from a Henne who played like the 1st 4 games. I for one, am sad to see Henne go.
Good luck Chad!
Mr_Solo_Dolo - February 21, 2012
I defended him, bought his jersey ( and Ginn's too ), and really hoped he could get us over the hump,....
It just wasn’t meant to be.
Ohiofinfan4life - February 21, 2012
Wow
An OSU fan buying a Michigan man’s jersey….big step!! lol….I guess it’d be the same as me having Ronnie Brown as my favorite player for several years.
But Teddy was an OSU man, of course you’d instantly fall in love with him.
All I’m saying is, is 31 games really enough time to judge someone that plays the most important, but toughest position? Not in my opinion. Look at what happened with Bress, it took a while for him to come into his own. I hope the same happens for Henne. I wonder if AZ is a possibility for Henne?
Mr_Solo_Dolo - February 22, 2012
About damn time
Ben Bacon - February 21, 2012
He gave it everything he had every game. Never enough for the Dolphin fans, they only see Marino.
Dolfan88 - February 21, 2012
Giving everything you have
and being a good QB are two different things, no one questions Henne’s desire/drive they question his ability to be a winning qb in this league.
phinhead - February 21, 2012
Whats the chances
He’ll end up at a rival (I’m thinking with his former coach) and make us regret it, just like a number of Dolphins rejects.
He has the tools and maybe by going elsewhere he’ll learn how to use them, it just never working in Miami and I don’t think it ever would have.
DickDevil - February 21, 2012
But his former coach
is the one who couldn’t figure out how to use him sooooo…….
phinhead - February 21, 2012
maybe the redskins will pick him up and let rg3 slip to us
FishNFinz - February 21, 2012
Already did that by proxy
with Beck, don’t feel that they will fall for that again….
DickDevil - February 21, 2012
first john beck now chad henne. I am sad

Another second round fail
Please no more second round QB’s. Draft Tannehill in the first or Osweiler in the third, but its a kiss of death for any Miami QB to be taken in the second round. Henne just fell victim to a failed tradition.
CanT0o - February 21, 2012
and a victim of a failed offensive strategy, and a revolving door for a right side O.L.

No animosity against Henne at all
You could tell he was trying his best. You can disapprove of a guy’s performance when he fails, but you can’t hate a guy if he was giving it his all.
That being said, I know Henne showed improvement this year. I know we lost a lot to start the season, but the whole team stunk. The defense was incredibly out of shape, with Dansby overweight, Smith and Davis deconditioned (Cramping, really???). Also, Kevin Burnett was learning a complicated 3-4 defense on the fly with no real offseason.
On offense, Reggie Bush was being used improperly. Daniel Thomas was injured. Jake Long was playing hurt. Marc Colombo was Marc Colombo. Pouncey was still learning the ropes. Marshall was dropping TDs. Fasano was trapped having to help Colombo in pass blocking situations. Charles Clay was injured.
Henne was playing with a pretty bad team.
THAT BEING SAID, though – there are two reasons why I, a devoted Henne supporter since Pennington went down (the first time) until Henne’s injury this year, am content with him leaving.
1. Matt Moore demonstrated that it’s possible to throw deep passes that our WR corps and TE’s can catch. You can call it “touch” or bravery or w/e, ultimately Matt Moore was throwing 20+ yard passes that were being caught regularly by Marshall and Hartline. Henne struggled with the deep ball.
2. Henne in the 2010 season and his four game 2011 season never could get it done in the fourth quarter. I get it – he is still a young QB, and he’s not going to dominate in the two minute drill like Brady, the Manning Brothers, Rodgers, or Brees. I accept that.
But there were plenty of times where the defense was holding the other team at bay, and all the Dolphins needed to ice the win was just one more TD or one more field goal in the fourth quarter, with Miami getting the ball with 5 minutes to go….and Henne would go 3 and out on 3 passing attempts. And that’s what ruined it. When the team counted on Henne the most was when Henne played the worst, be it the red zone or the last quarter of the game.
Still, I wish him luck (as long as he doesn’t go to the Jets). I suspect he’ll either have a comfortable NFL career as a capable backup with 30+ games of starting experience or he’ll get a shot to start at a handful of teams. I like the guy and I’m rooting for him to eventually do well – I just don’t want to keep waiting for him.
MartinH04 - February 21, 2012
Hallelujah
Matt Moore is a better starter/back up option then him. Good luck to Chad Henne though.
Virtualphil - February 21, 2012
Thank you Martin for putting my feelings in perspective for me........
I knew this day was coming and have mixed feelings. While I would not consider myself a devoted henne supporter, I do feel like there is a certain something there that could be brought out with coaching and a good scheme. Good kid, hard worker and the potential for future success(This coming from a resident Ohian and Buckeye). However, like Martin, I can’t wait forever for the kid to come around.
Good luck in your new job Chad. I wish things would’ve worked out better the same way my girlfriend wishes I was better in the sack. Neither is coming around soon enough so we move on with life!! I wish matt moore had chad’s arm strength, we’d be set. Here is to finding our quarterback of the future in 2012 and a good night to all.
Youngstown_Phinatic - February 21, 2012
F*** me...
Drumzan - February 21, 2012
Regardless of how you feel,
The fact is that he loved this team, and wanted to win and be great for us. I hope he starts again someday. He has the skills, just not the consistency.
Mustang920 - February 22, 2012
New style offense would be better suited for Henne rather than Moore IMHO
