Well as per the new CBA each team got a 3 mil. exemption
for one player during the 2011 season that would not count towards the cap. That could only be used on one person but if the player had a cap number of 5 mil then they could have that person only count 2. Well for every season after 2011 they get 3 exemptions for 1.5 mil a piece.

From my understanding, it is actually $1.5 mil total for 3 players, not $1.5 for 3 players each.
I used to think that as well. I wouldn’t necessarily rush to use it though because you’re only borrowing from future salary caps. If Miami makes that move, that’ll be money taken from their cap in 2013 and 2014. I believe it is $500k in 2013 and $1 mil in 2014, but I could be mistaken on that part.
