Jerome huh... another running back?

Competition or learning for DT, I guess.

Roster filler...

…for the camps and practices. He won’t be competition for Thomas.

Maybe

He averaged 5.4 yards a carry last year. Ricky Williams averages 4.8 yards in Canada. I’m not sure if that says anything with the different variables. But we shall see. He will most likely be our “3rd down back” if he makes the team. He will turn 27 by the start of this season though.

It's worth giving him a shot

Although RB is the least important position on a team

could give us an option at FB that moves Clay to TE on a permanent basis, alleviating a need in the draft?
Either way you look at it though, it is a good pick up.

Especially if it also allows us to mix things up and move Bush all around the field. Sometimes it isnt what the guy you pick up can do, but what he allows you to do with other players whats important.

i think the guy can compete to be our big RB/FB. He is a big kid that can move decently well. I never really liked Brandon Jacobs but I do see value in a guy like him on your team. This Messam kid can add another dimension which is a key in this league. I don’t see him having much special teams value a la lex hilliard but I certainly could be wrong as I have only seen a few clips of him.

And there is no guaranteed money in this deal so for him that blows but for the team its a good thing.

So we signed the CFL's best running back...

Is that like signing the best running back from the LFL minus the hottness?

jk, all jokes aside, this could possible be a really good pickup. He really did have a breakout year last year and I think I read he was voted the number one offensive player in the league last year. He could prove beastly. If he pans out we could have a sick complement to one of the best RB’s in the league in Reggie Bush. Worst case scenario, he doesn’t pan out and he provides competition for Thomas hopefully pushing him to play as good as he did in a few of his games last year.

Signed the CFL's best defensive player a couple of years ago...that worked out OK
I thought that at first too..

But when we signed Wake I went and watched a couple game recaps of his, and on every play he looked unstoppable and completely dominant. It was very obvious that in the CFL Wake was a Man among Boys.

This guy though…. I don’t know. Watching the film I’d honestly rather get who #31 is off of Edmonton then this guy. He’s huge for a HB (6’3" 245 lbs) and has decent speed for his size, and can even put some moves on and show some power as well. Nothing that spectacular or dominant though.

My problem with him, though, is he looks like he is a very selfish and/or lazy player.

Watch this video starting at 0:30 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_xzXsP2vSY

Here are two plays where you can see what I’m talking about. On the first play, he is “helping” to block the RE trying to run around the corner, but the effort is lackluster at best. He seems more interested in being a spectator then finishing the block. On the next play of the highlight, they fake the run to him on a play action, and as soon as he hits the line of scrimmage he stops, stands up, and watches the QB before the QB has even released the ball.

I mean….. really? Really?

Next I wanted to see what he was like when they were losing, so I pulled up this game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l97SbR4-eYI&feature=related

Now fast forward to about 4:53 … Here we are down by 11 in the 4th quarter, and he is called on to pass block. Lackadaisical. The following play he at least slows the guy down, but if the ref was watching him he should have been called for holding the whole time. And the play following that, watch his effort (or the lack thereof) on the interception return.

Looks like camp fodder to me. Just sayin’.

You might well be right

When Wake was here all you heard about him as how driven he was and what a great guy he was…that and how could the Giants release him.

At the very least it’s a gamble on a $400,000 insurance policy…we won’t make that in Canada so maybe he’s be properly motivated
