The Miami Dolphins continue to await word from Jeff Fisher on his acceptance or declination of their head coaching position.
The Miami Dolphins search for a head coach is now a week old. It's been a busy week for the Dolphins, who seem to be one of the busiest franchises in the head coach sweepstakes. However, everything hinges on one man right now. Former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher is still deciding between the St. Louis Rams and the Dolphins head coach positions.
And, until he decides, all the Dolphins can do is continue to interview others, and build their backup plan.
Fisher was in St. Louis yesterday, touring their facilities and meeting with quarterback Sam Bradford. While this is not necessarily a sign that Fisher has made a decision, given that his initial interview for the job took place in Denver with the Rams owner, and not at the team's facilities, it does exacerbate the feeldings of dread sweeping through many Dolphins fans right now.
It looks like, if all the "sources," "reports," and rumors are true, that the Dolphins will miss out on their top choice to replace Tony Sparano.
But, that does not mean the Dolphins are not ready for that to happen.
The Dolphins have already interviewed several other potential candidates, and lined up a few more. The Dolphins began their coaching search on the first day possible, with the interview of their interim head coach Todd Bowles. While Bowles has been considered a possible head coach candidate for a few years now, the Dolphins would like to keep Bowles as a defensive coordinator next season. His interview, however, did satisfy the NFL's Rooney Rule, designed to ensure a minority candidate is interviewed for all head coach vacancies.
The Dolphins then moved on to Fisher last Tuesday, with the Chicago Bears' Dave Toub following behind that on Wednesday. Toub is the Bears' special teams coach, and is believed to be the top candidate for Chicago if a change from current head coach Lovie Smith happened.

Miami then spoke to the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator Joe Philbin on Friday and Saturday. Philbin's interview had to be completed this week since the Packers had a bye through the first round of the playoffs. Conventional thought is, if the Dolphins were to hire Philbin, they would then make a push to sign soon to be free agent quarterback Matt Flynn. Flynn has served as the backup to Aaron Rodgers for the past four seasons, and could come in to a Philbin run team already knowing the basic offensive scheme.
But, the Dolphins continue to await word from Fisher. It has been reported from multiple sources that Fisher's intent is to sign with the Rams, but is allowing Dolphins' owner Stephen Ross a chance to up his current contract offer, either in terms of money or power. It's believed Fisher's decision should come within the next 24-48 hours. Sports Illustrated's Peter King tweeted late last night:
Meanwhile, the Dolphins will continue their interview process this week, with at least two more coordinators heading to Miami. The Atlanta Falcons have given permission to speak with their offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, who spent two years in Miami, one as an offensive coordinator and one as a tight end coach. The Dolphins are also expected to speak with Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer this week. Both teams lost in their playoff matchups this past weekend, paving the way for the interviews to commence.
Other names popular among fans include the Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden and the Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski. Neither has been mentioned among reports of interviews being lined up, but, once the Fisher decision is announced, Miami could continue their search by adding both of them to the schedule.
Also popular candidates, currently unavailable due to the playoffs, are New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, Jr., and Green Bay Packers Assistant Head Coach Winston Moss. If the Dolphins would like to interview either of those candidates, or any other playoff teams' coaches, they will have to wait until that team has been eliminated from the playoffs. They can also interview candidates from Super Bowl teams during the week between the Conference Championship games and the Super Bowl.
As the Dolphins coaching search continues to revolve around the decision of Fisher, the team is building a large portfolio on other possible candidates. It's just a waiting game now to see if they will get Fisher or have to move on to their back up plan.

Gag me with a spoon.
After living in Nashville for 20 years, suffering “Titanmania,” I don’t see why Fisher is now heralded as THE guy.
Ireland and Ross continue to play buffoon.
Tunaflipper - January 9, 2012
You'd think one 'Stash was enough.
Farorefox - January 9, 2012 via mobile
And he dyes it!
Tunaflipper - January 9, 2012
How are they playing buffoon?
I don’t understand why people keep complaining about them. EVERYONE on the site, 3 weeks ago, were talking about how this team needs a big name, proven head coach. Everyone was tired of these guys without headcoaching experience, we need a guy who has been there and done that.
So now, the team goes after the top guy, and they are buffoons for doing it? And who else is there – Gruden who wants to stay at ESPN or Cowher who wants to stay at CBS? Or maybe they should go after Billick, who is in such demand right now, not a single team has lined up an interview with him.
If Miami did not make a play for Fisher, this site would be going crazy with people complaining that Ross wasn’t trying for the one big name coach out there.
Kevin Nogle - January 9, 2012
Mosul fans are upset because the team has had three consecutive losing seasons.
Thats the bottom-line. It doesn’t have to do with Irelands perceived character issues so much, nor do I think it has to do with any specific personnel moves or the unusual ways Ross’ and Ireland approach the offseason. If the team was a winning team then the fans wouldn’t care. It is this simple: if you win you will earn the support of your fanbase, If you don’t then they will hate you as a body. This team has suffered three consecutive losing seasons and Irelans is seen by fans as one of two things through that span. Either a chief responsibility or a non-entity under Parcells for two of them. The other things only accentuate the frustration because this team is a losing team.
It may not be fair but that is how fans think. Steve Spagnoulo may have been a great coach in the NFL, he is a Superbowl winning coordinator but in St. Louis in three seasons tenured with Billy Devaney they suffered three consecutive losing seasons one of them being a 1-15 season and another two years later being a 2-14 seaon. You lose 3 games in a row in the NFL fans are mumbling about change. Losing like that! They dont want you fired, they want you taken out behind the barn and shot.
civwarbuff - January 9, 2012
I completely agree.
As soon as this team starts winning again, people will forget all about Stephen Ross.
Kevin Nogle - January 9, 2012
and jeff to .. lol dont forget that.
animal2020 - January 9, 2012
AGREE !
I want Ireland, Parcells, and Ross taken out and shot behind the barn ! Why didnt someone propose this earlier ?
62Lou - January 9, 2012
Spot on as always civwarbuff!
As a long time supporter of the FO, I just get frustrated that it “appears” that we’re a joke. If Ross/Ireland did more to clarify their intentions to the fanbase, rather than leaving it to the media, maybe that wouldn’t be the case. No one knows if Ireland, Ross, or Peterson are calling the shots. They could very well have a good plan and be executing it well, but how are any of us to know with all the “info” coming from the “MandOmar Times”….
Red Dog - January 9, 2012
I am not everyone lol.
I’ve been hoping for an up and coming O-Coordinator, specifically Chud and then Philbin.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
I like the coordinator idea but
I am more in favor of Mike Zimmer from the Bengals. That guy did a lot with a little, his players love him, and if we have a coach with those skills here I think we could be a playoff team.
Dakota Phan - January 9, 2012
I disagree
I never once supported the big name retread coach
Little Nicky 21 - January 9, 2012 via Android app
"Feelings of dread"...
I don’t think so…either keep Bowles or hire Philbin….better yet, hire Dave or Mike Shula. Dave did okay considering he had an idiot for a GM and no talent on his team.
Blue or CONKZILLA - January 9, 2012
And, he has obviously been fighting off the jobs since 1996.
He was the fastest coach in NFL history to lose 50 games. That’s not really doing “okay.”
Mike isn’t getting head coach looks right now because he hasn’t proven he is ready to be a head coach. He’s in line to pick up a coordinator job, if Chudzniski gets picked up by someone this offseason.
Like I said above, if the Dolphins didn’t go after the one big name coach in play, everyone on this site would be going crazy. Now that they are trying for the one guy with the experience everyone seemed to think we needed three weeks ago, we get complaints that they are doing exactly what we said they wanted to do.
If the team came out and said “We’ve decided to hire Todd Bowles,” I guaranteed EVERYONE would be complaining how Tony Sparano’s assistant head coach was not the change the team needed after Tony Sparano.
Kevin Nogle - January 9, 2012
You are confusing people, Mosul.
Some people have wanted Fisher, and they were very vocal before the search started. Some people don’t want Fisher, and they are very vocal now that it is a possibility. That’s just how this site works. It comes in cycles.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
"Everyone?"
sorry, a pet prevent of mine (he’s cute and fluffy).
I agree people like to complain, but I guarantee you that it isn’t the same people doing it. 22 comments this morning isn’t everyone. it’s more like everyone who complained loudly a few weeks ago wanted a big name experienced guy and everyone who complains loudly today doesn’t like Fisher. they need not be the same people.
Strange - January 9, 2012 via Android app
Great minds
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Well it is true that people with negative or polar views tend to be more vocal about it.
Stats lesson.
PotM - January 9, 2012
Every view can be perceived as negative...
If you are for someone, that means you are against their competition. The people for Fisher were just as vocal as the people against Fisher are now because the people for Fisher are against an up and coming coordinator with no experience.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Not really, if I ask in a questionaire "Does company A's toothpaste taste good?"
The people that hate it will more than likely rush to denounce it, whie customers of the product won’t. Also, you can like multiple companies products, even if they are the same type of product.
PotM - January 9, 2012
Not really...
There were tons of Henne posts last year where Henne had positive results on whether he should start this year or not. The pro-Henne crowd was quite vocal.
If you made a poll about toothpaste and the results were negative, how does that automatically imply that people who dislike the toothpaste were more motivated to vote no? Maybe, just maybe, they have shitty toothpaste! Not to mention there are so many brands of toothpaste out there that not a single toothpaste has the majority on consumers, so every brand would be expected to have a less than 50% reply rate.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
less than 50% "yes" reply rate*
joel311 - January 9, 2012
I responded to your reply about Revis last night this morning. Didn't see it, sorry about that. I said:
PotM sometimes you make things up! No offense. The last time the AFC East played the NFC South was 2009.
In that game where Revis covered Steve Smith in press man for virtually the entire contest Steve Smitth had one reception fo 5 yards and no touchdownshttp://www.nfl.com/player/stevesmith/2504595/gamelogs?season=2009
Revis recorded 3 passes defensed including two interceptions one of which was returned for a Touchdown.http://www.nfl.com/player/darrellerevis/2495717/gamelogs?season=2009
The only type of receiver that can give Revis any trouble is a receiver that has enough strength and physicality to out position him when the ball is in the air. Revis is too fast to be beat with speed, he is technically superb and he can close virtually any space so its almost impossible to get a release on him. He has as good lateral quickness as any receiver in football and his recovery speed is amazing. The only receivers who can give him problems are those smart enough, fast enough and most importantly strong enough to dominate where Revis wants to put his hands and how he uses his body to box people out. If you can’t match his physicality blow for blow he will wipe you out. If they can’t control their space they can’t play with him.
Hence his amazing battles with Marshall and the Johnson’s. Yet he can still hold his own against those players. The man is incredible. The best cornerback in the game by a wide margin.
civwarbuff - January 9, 2012
Yeah, except Delhomme missed him on like 5 passes that would have gotten Smith a 100 yd game.
PotM - January 9, 2012
Lol

I hope Fisher goes with the Rams
Ross just needs to stay quiet. If he didn’t make such a big deal of declaring “we won’t be outbid”, then this wouldn’t seem like egg on our face. Same with “going to the Super Bowl” last season. Just keep the checkbook handy and be quiet.
Red Dog - January 9, 2012
Ross has NEVER come out and said "We won't be outbid."
It’s a report Armando Salguero made based on a “source” close to Ross.
Ross hasn’t said anything to media except that we’ve fired Sparano and that Carl Peterson has been fired. So, isn’t he doing exactly what you want? Staying quiet and keeping the checkbook handy?

aww poor mosul.. trying to explaine facts and common sence to the masses again .. its like sitting and watching someone scream and cry about how hungery they are with a full plate of food right in front of them.. they are way to busy playing the spoiled brat in the room to even see the plate. so mommy mosul even takes a spoon and feeds them and while they choke on it they are still screaming that they are starving.

Kevin Nogle - January 9, 2012
i like the full plate analogy....
i think the dolphins should be the first nfl team to go without a head coach….what no try something different….. :)
MagicDolphin - January 9, 2012
Calm down before you lump me in with the "masses"
I tend to not have the popularly held irrational hatred that the “masses” have around here. I just personally don’t think Fisher is “all that”, and I hate that it appears we are bungling every move we’re supposedly trying to make.
Mosul, OK, Ross never said we won’t be outbid, but so many times these guys talk through the media, and the media has been parroting the “we won’t be outbid” mantra with no one from our organization coming out to clarify. He also says he want a “young Don Shula”, then goes with an old “Sporano with a mustache”.
I understand Ross is in a tough spot, but he is seeming to make it tougher for himself. No one knows who’s running the show or how its being run.

Can anyone tell me how we know a lot of this stuff.
I think I understand roughly how the press works, some things are open, some are leaked. If you are interviewing several coaches, you don’t leak that one if them is your preferred choice. If you have a good defensive coordinator, you don’t leak that you want to replace him with the interrim coach.
This may all be true, but can anyone show how?
sirdolphin - January 9, 2012
The most popular rumor is usually the one everyone goes with as fact.
Sometimes its wrong but mostly it winds up being correct. The problem is that people like to talk and tell their buddy who tells his buddy and so on. Its so difficult to keep any major news 100% secret these days.
texascowpunk - January 9, 2012
& within the next three hours, the secret then gets back to you compleatly wrong or a bunch has been added!
Was this the “same secret” you brought to the office this morn. Not likely but you know what i mean!
wild zion beaver - January 9, 2012
I do know what you mean.
Its like that exercise you did back in school. Line up 15 kids. The first one reads something off a piece of paper. He then tells the next kid what it is and so on and so forth. When you get to the last kid you ask him to tell you what it was. Then you ask the first kid to read it out aloud again. They are never, ever close to being the same thing but at least its funny how much the story can change when no one has motives to do so.
texascowpunk - January 9, 2012
Now you add to that same situation the fact that some people will hear part of a story and have motivation for
it to be true and maybe even dress it up a bit before passing it on and you get yourself some rumors that are horribly wrong and at times very far from the truth.

Mixed emotions on Fisher
I like his stability which we desperately need but the 3 runs in a cloud of dust philosophy is too retro for me. Plus this feels a lot like what Harbaugh did to Ross last season.
FinsSince70 - January 9, 2012
As the title suggests,
I think we came on too strong lol
joel311 - January 9, 2012
And I have the same feelings on Fisher.
He is clearly loyal to a franchise, so we won’t have to worry about a JJ or Saban style flight from our organization, but his track record is less than stellar.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
What's the big deal?
I’m not too impressed with Fisher. He’s another retread like Parcells. I understand Ross wanting a guy with head coaching experience in the NFL. But Fisher I consider adverage at best. Since a great experienced head coach is not available I’m leaning toward giving Bowles a chance especially if they can retain Nolan as defensive coordinator. The Fins did come together late in the season and they should learn form their mistakes (like not being in shape at the start of the season). Of course it’s not going to matter who coaches until we get a franchaise QB. We need to keep Moore, who could lead the Fins until a young QB isn ready to start. IF we can’t get a good QB in the draft we need to go after a veteran until hopefully we can land a young leader the next year.

a few pet peeves
I’ve been following dolphin blog sites for a number of years and have a few pet peeves…not to offend anyone but once proud franchise and franchise quarterback are way overused…also lose is not spelled loose and defense and offense are not spelled defence and offence…there I feel much better

joel311 - January 9, 2012
Or anyone other than American
It is the British way of spelling it, we have members of the blog from Europe that would have learned how to spell it the British way as well (from any British Commonwealth for that matter, all 54 countries).

It is the British way of spelling it, with all 2.1 billion people in the British Commonwealth. :)
Just like the correct spelling is: honour, neighbour, colour or harbour (amongst others). Stop being so lazy and add the letter Americans have removed and spell it correctly. lol
Also, if you see me spell words such as honour as honor it is because I don’t want to confuse you guys. It just makes things a lot easier for me, I get tired of explaining it all of the time. Although it can be exhausting at times to try and remember the American way of spelling things.

Mosul I think
Fanz are getting pissed (I know I am) about the way this so called coaching search is developing.First of all Fisher aint nothing to get a woody over and if he does land here were no better off than the last three years IMO.Secondly keeping Ireland is just plain retarded we will not get anybody worth a shit with this idiot still around, with him here means we have to go the route of coordinator or college coach which i dont think solves anything. Im starting to think Ross or whoever has his ear doesnt know shit. I heard Fisher is leaning towards the rams because he will be in on the GM search, really though whoever we get will have to get along with Ireland who seems to be perplexed by prostitutes the only thing Ireland has shown anyone is he is very unprofessional but he must be able to suck a helluva dick or something because really i havent seen the guy make a good decision since getting CP.
Finz4eva - January 9, 2012
No good decisions from Ireland?
First off, Ireland was not in control when Pennington came to town. That was Parcells. Ireland was in control this last year where we acquired Bush, did not sell the farm for Orton, and had a pretty solid draft class (though passing on Mallett two rounds in a row was not what I’d have done). Ireland has shown a lot of good instincts in his only year as the person with the final say on personnel.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Add Kevin Burnett to the mix
LimeyPhin - January 9, 2012 via mobile
Kevin Burnett gets an asterisk.
Part of that decision was to cut Crowder, the QB of the field for the defense. We saw how that worked out for the first half of the season.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
But, if the GM being here were an issue
Wouldn’t Cowher, Gruden, or whomever else “anybody worth a shit” constitutes, be in play for them? They fired their GM. Still, biggest name is Fisher.
So, it must not be Ireland.
Kevin Nogle - January 9, 2012
Good point.
Everybody else has been out of football for too long, but the only former HC that I would be happy with is Billick. For Fisher, I’d take a wait and see approach.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Thats funny that you say Fisher favors the Rams because he will be part of the GM search.
Didn’t news come out last week that the Rams were interviewing someone under Ireland for that spot?
Just goes to show how much B.S. Is out there right now. Besides, if Fisher really favore the Rams so much, we would’ve heard so by now from him.

Billick
Anyone know why Billick’s name hasn’t come up for any open job? Seems odd no one has interviewed him.
FinsSince70 - January 9, 2012
I think it's just his long absence away from the NFL.
I’d definitely like for hiim to get an interview.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Rumor has it that Billick is on the "No Call" list for Owners and GM's
He is seen as extremely arrogant and impossible to work with. I heard that he always sees himself as the smartest man in the room and if you disagree with him, he makes your life miserable.
Sounds like Parcels and Belicheck if you ask me.
ct1361 - January 9, 2012
If he wins Super Bowls... maybe people should just accept it.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Guess that would explain it if it's true
It sure seems he’s been blacklisted….. It’s interesting how owners would put their locker rooms in peril by signing questionable players but black list a super bowl winning coach
FinsSince70 - January 9, 2012
No boss likes to feel inferior to their employee.
It’s the same in any field, but if an owner truly feels they are smarter than Billick, then they would do the smart business move and bring a recent Super Bowl winning coach to their team. Winning sells tickets and jerseys.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Great point.
An owner has to be in the room with a head coach – and won’t take to lightly to being made to feel inferior. But, a player, an owner doesn’t have to deal with. That’s why there is a coach and a GM.
Make sense why an owner would take a chance on a player and not on a coach.
Kevin Nogle - January 9, 2012
That's a good point as well.
Fisher vs V. Young is a great example.

There is a really good documentary on Brian Billick from NFL films in the "In their own words" series.
If you are interested Ct here is a link to the video if you haven’t seen it (with obnoxious commercial breaks). He was younger when the documentary was done, Im not sure exactly when but the issues you raised come up early one. He talks about the arrogance persona, the media e.t.c.
I don’t know him personally no on a proffessional level but when watching him despite that perception he comes across as entirely the opposite of arrogant to me. Chec it out for yourself.

It was though however made before he was fired in Baltimore.

Also for anyone who sayd he is arrogant (including himself) which is ultimately irrelevant anyways
Look at one of the last scenes in the video where he sits down with his player and releases him. Now think back to hard knocks and how Mike Tannenbaum carried himself in that situation. They were both gentle and kind but with Billick you know that he genuinely cares about this man. He gives him some life advice and tells him straight where he stands in the NFL. Tannenbaum was also as gentle as possible but there wasn’t any human connection.
Tough judgement when looking from the outside in, but that was my reaction.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree. That is just the type of stuff I have heard about him.
There has to be something there with him to not even get an interview. I mean 100 year old Marty Schottenheimer is getting an interview with Tampa but Billick isn’t.
Something is not right there.

No no I understand that you weren't saying he is or not saying that he is.
I was just throwing out my perceptions for whatever they are worth (not much as I said) and thought you may be interested in the documentary because those topics came up. Nothing else.

Guess I’ll have to setup a VPN to watch it. Will maybe try when I have more time later.

Can we put them in a room together and see what happens?
Kevin Nogle - January 9, 2012
Honestly, I think Chud or Winston Moss should be the guy in Miami
I had no problem with Fisher in Miami, but if he wants to go take over a downtrodden Rams roster with maybe three or four franchise-caliber players on it, then there’s really nothing we can do about that. j
This might actually be a great thing for us anyway.

I agree that Fisher is
Not such a powerful head coach that he will be able to win NEXT year with the nucleus already in place. When you have the players a less experienced coach will do,and if he is a young coach in terms of never having the head coach job anywhere else, you get continuity. If I was an owner I would not recycle a former head coach I would promote a coach without head coaching experience.Lets look at all the teams left in the playoffs, the only one that was a head coach on another team is Bellichick.I could be wrong about Bellichick but If memory serves me he was the the HC for the Browns. If anyone can correct me on this be my guest.
broxtone - January 9, 2012
The Browns is correct.
BUT Belichik had a cheap owner in Cleveland, which stunted his potential. That is similar to what Fisher had in Tennessee… To be fair.

I 2nd the motion I hope Fisher goes
To the HAMS
broxtone - January 9, 2012
I thought the Dolphins should get an experienced
HC but that was in comparison to Sparano, now that nobody is in place I prefer to go with someone without head coaching experience and pay him less than say a Fisher. Then spend more on players either in the draft or free agency. You might think that is a contradiction, but I would only sign any coach without head coaching experience to a one year deal. After that the team could retain him or sign someone else. This notion of continuity would still be in place if the offensive and defensive cordinators were the same.
broxtone - January 9, 2012
I don't see how signing a coach to a one year deal brings continuity.
Fisher is the biggest example of continuity in today’s NFL. He was with Tennessee for 16 years.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
I love Fisher but I think it's time to move on...
Honestly, i think Miami is a great destination for a head coach (and ultimately I think we’ll end up with someone good as long as we aren’t retarded and hire a special teams coordinator or something)… BUT I think St. Louis is a PERFECT position for Fisher unfortunately.
Franchise QB, #2 draft pick, weak division…. plus they wen’t 2-14 so the expectations aren’t as high and the pressure won’t be as high.
I’m looking at Chud, Moss, or Philbin to be our guy. If we’re not getting THE guy we better get a PROVEN candidate who has had success on a GOOD team.
BSerious72 - January 9, 2012
I couldn't tell you who Moss was a week ago. But now, reading up on him, he sounds impressive.
What I keep reading that I like the most is that he commands the room when he enters it. That presence is something that I think this team needs, especially with the lack of player leadership that exists IMO.
I couldn’t help but laugh a little when I read that line. Wouldn’t it be just like the Phins to hire an UNPROVEN candidate that didn’t have success from a BAD team? Someone like Daboll? LOL
ct1361 - January 9, 2012
I think you figured it out...
Daboll is the new head coach!!
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Maybe Ross negotiated a secret agreement to get the number 2 pick from him in STL.
