The Miami Dolphins continue to search for their next head coach, as word of a decision from Jeff Fisher continues to not come. Fisher, the former Tennessee Titans head coach, is considered the top candidate for the Miami position, but has also been interviewed by the St. Louis Rams this week. Yesterday, word came that Fisher had limited his job hunt to the Dolphins or Rams jobs. But, the waiting game was expected to last through the weekend.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins interviewed Green Bay Packer Joe Philbin yesterday. Or, maybe it should be, the Dolphins are interviewing Philbin. The Packers' offensive coordinator is expected to stay in Miami on Saturday, and continue a second day of the interview process.
The fact that the interview is heading into a second day could signal that Philbin has impressed Dolphins' owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland. It could mean that, if Fisher decides to head to the NFC West, the Dolphins have found their coach.
Or, it could just mean they wanted to talk to Philbin a little more.

The question surrounding Philbin is, how much of the offense does he actually coordinate? Packers head coack Mike McCarthy calls the plays. So, what exactly is Philbin's role, and how much of the offense is his?
It makes looking at Philbin and saying, yes, that's the guy that can run a team, much more difficult to confirm. But, being in a prolific offense, an offense that, as the coordinator, Philbin has never seen dip below tenth in the NFL, has to mean something.
Could Ross and Ireland be ready to break out of the power running offense of Tony Sparano, an offense similar to what Fisher would bring to Miami, in favor of Green Bay's scheme? Does the interest in Philbin signal the Dolphins are also interested in soon-to-be free agent Matt Flynn, who has served as the second string quarterback in Green Bay since 2008. Could the Dolphins be preparing to bring in Philbin, the Packers offensive system, and a quarterback familiar with that system in one big swoop?
Either way, the wait in Miami continues.

Fisher is going to st. Louis
I think ross should hire todd bowles if fisher goes to st. Louis
CAphinfan - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Rumor is we are going to or try to hire Bowles as our DC
Foy - January 7, 2012
why?
What is wrong with Mike Nolan? Where did you hear this rumor?
Jason Scott_90 - January 7, 2012
He started it.
Which is still a rumor!
joel311 - January 7, 2012
Hahahaha
Alpha6 - January 7, 2012
what? source?
Kdog92 - January 7, 2012
It is a rumor out there.
I think Nolan realizes he’s out whenever a new coach shows up.
Kevin Nogle - January 7, 2012
Why? Is he no good?
Alpha6 - January 7, 2012
Please!!!
Please let this be the case!!!!!!
I want a hungry, talented Coach and a hungry, talented QB and this option provides both. I am sick and tired of the conservative offense that Miami has been running since Shula left, that Fisher, and Bowles would bring to Miami. Philbin would bring an agressive offensive scheme, and will not be ok with holding out until next year for a QB. We would also be able to keep Ireland (i know i am going to catch shit for this) say what you will but Ireland killed it in his personel desicions (that haven’t been overlooked and ruled by Tuna) Draft and FA alike.
phins4day - January 7, 2012
I don't know about talented
but if you want a coach who’s hungry i’d look at either of the Ryan brothers.
BSerious72 - January 7, 2012
I see
what you did there…
Mr. Imperial - January 7, 2012
Philbin and Flynn come on down!!
Unless we can draft RGIII
Maguss - January 7, 2012
Toub had a two day interview. I'm not so sure the two day thing matters.
Philbin worries me. He doesn’t call the plays. He does the schemes and gameplan but not the plays. Also is Flynn good enough. And I doubt ths will happen anyway as it will hardly get fans excited. Philbin and Flynn? Nah I want RG3 or even Tannehill.
BahamaDolfan - January 7, 2012
It took him two days to convince Ireland that he wasn't Lovie Smith.
Ireland is such a racist!
joel311 - January 7, 2012

Philbin and flynn
I would be very happy. I think Flynn could be our franchise qb. Keep matt moore as his backup
dolfan52 - January 7, 2012
His contract would just be so big.
But I guess if anyone knows whether he’s good enough it’s Flynn.
In other news, sources close to fisher say he wants to put together a rockstar coaching staff. Good bye daboll if that’s the case.
BahamaDolfan - January 7, 2012
Tony Sprano Jr. ;)

Dont know how to spell last name
CAphinfan - January 7, 2012 via mobile
So you chose phinfan as your last name?
Alpha6 - January 7, 2012
I'm in favor of Philbin
I would much Rather see Philbin’s offense than Fisher’s!!!
phinsfaninne - January 7, 2012
Is offense a code word?
Alpha6 - January 7, 2012
This would make more & more sense now that Jones is staying in school as well.......
but as Omar would sya….is he a “leader of Men” does he command respect….Toub fits that bill!

Philbin
No disrespect to Philbin, but he has one of if not the best QB’s in the league, as well as some of the best WR’s and TE and he doesn’t even call the plays. Almost anybody would look great with all that. It’s like cruise control on your car. I would prefer Bowles over him if we miss on the big fish.
miamimike71 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
And....
you don’t think that he might have had anything to do with that? I don’t believe that Matt Flynn stepping in and throwing 6 TD’s was because he is the second best qb in the league. Philbin has to have had a good chunk of development with these guys.
Rumple Pigskin1 - January 7, 2012
See above
Again, see above and see Kevin Kolb. Don’t get me wrong, maybe Philbin and Flynn are decent but are they really “those guys”? Everybody jumped on Kolb’s bandwagon last year because of a couple games. I knew that while average, he wasn’t a franchise QB. And the so-called rumor about Bowled isn’t for Def. Co., it was said they might make him the Secondary coach.
miamimike71 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Bowles*
miamimike71 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Green Bay actually have a decent record of their backups being starting QB's. Exhibit no.1 - matt hasselback
BahamaDolfan - January 7, 2012
Exhibit no.2 mark Brunell.
I only found this info out today. It’s made me more confident about Flynn. I’m starting to research him and may put a post up next week about him.
BahamaDolfan - January 7, 2012
I'm pretty sure both of them were Holmgren's
Not the current people
Little Nicky 21 - January 7, 2012 via Android app
He already is the Secondary, aka Defensive Backs, Coach.
His next step is DC.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
Even though Philbin didn't call the plays
he was an important part in developing the offensive players and breaking down tape.
It looks like Fisther is heading to St. Louis, so Philbin is my 2nd choice. Kind of glad Fisher may not be here because I want Nolan to stay.
Whoever the coach is I will support them (as long as it’s not Rob Ryan). I look forward to seeing what a new coach will do to this talented team.
Kdog92 - January 7, 2012
I kinda agree....
not sure I could look at a Ryan every week. Haha!
Rumple Pigskin1 - January 7, 2012
NO to Bowles!!!
does anyone remember the last NE game? When we were down ten in the 4th w/ 2:30 to go. Matt Morre has a good TD scoring drive to put us down 3 w/ 1:30 on the clock, and Bowles decides to not go for the onside kick. C’mon man we had no playoff hopes down 3 with 1:30 left and NE had 2 timouts that is as conservative as it gets. MIAMI does not need conservative anymore.
phins4day - January 7, 2012
Caffine; my stress leavel was way down, after reading this Cabammylets go to Califorina find gold for a liveing!
wild zion beaver - January 7, 2012
Guess that one game told it all for him...
Alpha6 - January 7, 2012
Yeah.
That’s pretty god damn stupid. If you recover the kick, you get the ball. If you don’t recover the kick, you are still in a 3 AND OUT SITUATION!!! Who the fuck cares about the field position, you have 3 downs regardless of where they are to make shit happen. It’s not like we should have been worried about them scoring… if they advance the ball more than 10 yards we lose regardless!
joel311 - January 7, 2012
Didn't he have 3 timeouts though?
BahamaDolfan - January 7, 2012
3 timeouts that were needed to move the ball with the offense.
It was a 3 and out situation, or else there was not going to be enough time on the clock.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
When Philbin took over Packers...
offense went up! He may of had the players, but weren’t the players already there with a Hall-of-famer QB before Rodgers and with a better running game? I am telling you Philbin is the guy if Fisher take job in St. Louis which many reports say that he is leaning that way.
Pasker720 - January 7, 2012
OK YOU FISHHEADS...?
I am sick and tired of hearing fishheads saying " we will bring in matt flynn or
earl flynn ( the actor ) to be our franchise QB and matt moore will back him up ".
YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME !!
If they bring earl flynn to miami you got to WIN the starting job by your
ability to get the job done on the field !!
Matt moore is the better QB.period.
Dolfan77 - January 7, 2012
Fishheads = Jackasses?
Alpha6 - January 7, 2012
Philbin
Why is everyone so enamored with Fisher? You will be going back to the Parcells formula of 3 yards in a cloud of dust running game. That is not how you win in the NFL these days. With all the rule changes protecting QB’s and WR’s why do you think the successful teams move thru the air? I am totally in favor of giving Philbin a shot, look at Sean Payton in NO – he was an assistant before going there. He got a QB (maybe Flynn follows Philbin here) and the rest is record setting history. You can sure see we aren’t going to be able to draft a QB this year, unless it is another “great value” guy in the 2nd or 3rd round and everyone knows we have had a bellyful of those guys.
FWE - January 7, 2012
Pass offenses rule the NFL
Head coach for Miami— Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski.. Man he had a top 5 offense with a rookie QB Cam Newton. Rejuvenated WR Steve Smith’s career (2011 Pro Bowl). They only scored 16 tds total in 2010 but had over 40 tds in 2011.
Won NCAA Championship 2001 Miami Hurricanes as OC with QB Ken Dorsey.
Had a 10-6 record with Romeo Crennel’s Cleveland Browns sent QB Derek Anderson, WR Braylon Edwards, and TE Kellen Winslow to the Pro Bowl. Their offense hasn’t been good since.
OC assistant with the San Diego Chargers in 2010 and finished ranked 1st in total offense.
The new NFL is: “Throw that Girl” and Chudzinski definitely knows how to do that.
KashMoney - January 7, 2012
where is a Packers fan when you need one?
Patssuck456 - January 7, 2012
LOL
Alpha6 - January 7, 2012
trade for Tom Coughlin
the Giants will accept draft picks for him.
Jcrew1179 - January 7, 2012
and then what of addressing the QB conundrum?
Alpha6 - January 7, 2012
I'm in favor of Philbin.
He doesn’t call the plays, OK.
But, I bet you he can.
He’s by Mikes side a lot, he breaks down film.
So it should come 2nd nature.
