The Miami Dolphins are expected to continue the search for their next head coach with an interview of Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Philbin has been with the Packers since 2003, initially serving as their assistant offensive line coach for a year.
He added responsibility for the tight ends in 2004, then moved up to become the offensive line coach in 2006. Philbin took over as the team's offensive coordinator in 2007, serving in that role for the last five seasons.
Since he took over as the Packers' offensive coordinator, the team has never been ranked lower than tenth in points scored and total yards for the season, along with winning the Super Bowl last season.

The Dolphins interest in Philbin, and the expected interview, was tweeted by Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
The Dolphins are currently awaiting to hear word from their top candidate, Jeff Fisher, who was interviewing with the St. Louis Rams yesterday. Reports have come out on both sides, saying each team is the favorite to land the former Tennessee Titans coach. The Dolphins have also interviewed their interim head coach Todd Bowles and the Chicago Bears' special teams coach Dave Toub.
If the Dolphins hire Philbin, speculation is the team would then pursue current Packers backup quarterback, and soon to be free agent, Matt Flynn as their quarterback. Flynn was a seventh round pick of the Packers in 2008, and has served as Aaron Rodgers' backup since the draft. Flynn has two starts in the NFL, including a franchise record setting performance for the Packers, a team with Bart Starr, Brett Favre, and Rodgers all having played for them, when on January 1st of this year, Flynn threw for 480-yards and 6 touchdowns in a 45-41 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Guess he brings Flynn with him.

I think FLynn would be an excellent starter
but the Redskins will aslo make a run at him.
Jcrew1179 - January 6, 2012
Hopefully they get him, less competition for RG3
Agent J 78 - January 6, 2012
Wouldn't bring the splash that was promised but....
…the correct choice very well may be one of the coordinator candidates. If it means a coach and QB coming together it would be an intriguing thought.
Ahhh the things that make you go hmmmmm
FinsSince70 - January 6, 2012
But Flynn can't possibly succeed.
He wasn’t a 1st Round draft pick :\
joel311 - January 6, 2012
lol
Phinphinatic - January 6, 2012
You are so right...
He has only thrown for 800 yards and 9 TD in two NFL starts. Damn he sucks, Moore threw for 16 TDS, oh wait that was 13 games. Of course we should get this guy and the QB. Offensive minded and a QB….what the hell isnt that what we have all been screaming bout for years.
Whippets2 - January 6, 2012
He was being facetious, poking fun at the way fans approach the Quarterback dilemma.
civwarbuff - January 6, 2012
somebody didn’t get it…LOL.
TAYDIGGA - January 6, 2012
he has...
and yes flynn has looked good ina couple of games, but he lacks experience. If we were to bring in philbin, he could very well succeed here given that he would already be familiar with the offense. But please dont assume that because a player succeeded on one team that he will be a cant miss on another. Flynn has played his way into a good position and will likely get paid quite well wherever he goes. I dont see Miami ponying up the money that it will cost to obtain him. Besides, the Packers may franchise Flynn as the Patriots did a couple of years back with Castle and look to get 2 1st round draft picks for him. It would be a gamble for the Packer because it could backfire and they would have to pay their back-up top 5 QB money.
If we dont get Philbin (and i am not saying that we should) Flynn could be nothing more than a Matt Castle…pretty good, but not elite. This fan base is looking for greatness and has little patience for development. Flynn does not have much experince and we really dont know how durable of an investment he could be.
Phinphinatic - January 6, 2012
Gotta agree with the Matt Cassel sentiment.
He’s played in 2 games behind a great O-Line with amazing weapons. Must be hard to succeed in that kind of environment!
He could be very good, and I wouldn’t mind if he came in as competition, but he hasn’t shown that he deserves the reigns of a struggling franchise just yet.
joel311 - January 6, 2012
packers
packers arent gonna franchise flynn and pay rogers backup 12 million….im sure their focus is on resigning jermichael finley…hell..bring all 3 to miami…we could use a stud te also..lol
paul wall 1962 - January 6, 2012
do you think the patriots had any intention of paying Castle top 5 money to back up Brady?
because they did the exact thing that i am referencing.
Phinphinatic - January 6, 2012
It's a much bigger risk franchising a guy that's played
only two unconnected and meaningless games than it is a guy who started 15 consecutive games, winning 11. I see your point, but I don’t think The Packers will assume they can get two first rounders.
joel311 - January 6, 2012
And the Packers will want to franchise Finley before Flynn.
They can’t afford to pay $14+ for a backup QB. They have needs in FA too.
Finhead83 - January 6, 2012
i understand why they shouldnt, but they will get what they want in a trade
there are too many teams that are desparate for a potential franchise QB that will take the bait.
Phinphinatic - January 7, 2012
There aren't nearly as many teams desperate for QBs as there was last year.
Minnesota, Jacksonville, Carolina, Arizona and Tennessee have all been taken out of the mix. Only KC, and it’s debatable, would be a new team looking for a QB. Maybe The Jets too. Two teams to replace five lowers the amount of demand significantly.

Philbin
The best thing for Miami would be for Fisher to coach St. Louis and Miami to hire Philbin, and, just maybe, sign Flynn.
tpl - January 6, 2012
If we are unable to get Fisher and move up in the draft
I’m all for this move. It gives us at least a decent young backup, trade power for 2013, and much needed qb competion comes TC. There is not much to choose from after Luck and RG3, but if an OC and his qb comes thru the door from a proven offense, lets ride with it.
fin4three5yrs - January 6, 2012
It's funny how............
Matt Flynn is the product of a spread/west coast variant offense, which is similar to what is run by the Pittburgh. I’d be happy for Philbin to come here and work with DaBoll, we have a great defense that has a lapse or two every now and then but its still great. The missing piece to the puzzle is Quarterback, we’ve shuffled through retreads and trash for gold trades for what I believe is a decade “maybe” more. If Philbin came here and he and Ireland found talent for DaBoll to install a similar offense with his help we’d be a better team if we had a qb that’s knowledgeable in the area of that offense. Bringing in Flynn could be boom or bust, cause we’re missing big play receivers outside of Marshall and the monster of a tightend, which is the reason I’m hoping we drat Dwayne Allen or bring in John Carlson. But in the end is it worth bringing Flynn here if we do get Philbin?
Carl Johnson a.k.a CJ - January 6, 2012
Mike Martz will figure into it all real soon!
wild zion beaver - January 6, 2012
for get this statement!
wild zion beaver - January 7, 2012
Here's a better idea:
Instead of wasting a ton of money on Flynn, why not maneuver so we can draft Barkley in 2013? That way we can use our FA money on other areas like O-line.
The Earl - January 6, 2012
Because that would be impossible
Patssuck456 - January 7, 2012
Trading for future draft picks is cool with me.
In fact, that’s ideal. It’s about time we start stockpiling. We have a hell of a lot of talent already.
joel311 - January 9, 2012
I'd rather have Clements
Patssuck456 - January 7, 2012
Hire..
I love the sound of this package deal.
Goon305Boy10 - January 7, 2012 via mobile
Just go with Philbin and call it a day. I would love to see the west coast in operation down in Miami. The Titans could never beat Indy until Chris Johnson who is becoming a memory came along. Before Fisher got fired the Patriots toasted his Titan team 59-0, this never happened to the Dolphins at least we can get a field goal. And in the last 3years with Kerry Collins and Vince Young his team was in a QB battle, unsure of whos #1. The AFC east is to tough for Fisher. Besides havent u all thought about we will be losing a great defensive coordinator in Mike Nolan if we hire Fisher who loves the 4-3 defense scheme. Cam Wake will become a defensive end maybe, hes one of the best a pass rushing LB, it may hurt the development of Koa Misi. I like our defensive schemes, they look better than the offense and in free agency with a safety like Laron Landry possibly we can seal up our defense with some other additions maybe as well. The Titans under Fisher was a run first team like Sparano expressed, I mean why fire Sparano if Ross will hire someone with a keep it on the ground mentality as well. Id say get Philbin, someone we know who would trade up and get an elite QB in the draft for sure or bring in Matt Flynn and maybe improve upon a foundation in Matt Moore who has great potential and can excel with a quality offensive line like the Patriots have. Also Philbin’s presence will attract some stellar Green Bay free agents or trades this year to make us playoff contenders possibly
