Miami Dolphins Coaching Staff Continues to Fill

The Miami Dolphins on Sunday continued to fill out the coaching staff of new head coach Joe Philbin. The team announced the hires of two coaches, as well as the team retaining three assistant coaches from last year. Today also came news of former interim head coach Todd Bowles had landed a new job.

The Dolphins announced the hiring of linebackers coach George Edwards and assistant quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor today. Edwards spent the last two seasons as the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator, after spending the firve years before that in Miami, coming back to resume his previous role with the franchise. He has also spent time on the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, and Dallas Cowboys coaching staffs in the NFL, as well as with the University of Florida Gators, University of Georgia Bulldogs, Duke Blue Devils, and Appalachian State Mountaineers staffs at the college level. He played linebacker for Duke in the late 1980s.

Taylor comes to Miami after having been a graduate assistant with Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman at Texas A&M Aggies. Taylor played college football at the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, starting for the team in 2005 and 2006, including an appearance in the 2006 Big 12 Championship game, and being named the 2006 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2007, but was eventually cut, and signed by the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Dolphins also officially announced tight ends coach Dan Campbell, strength coach Darren Krein, and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi would be retained from former head coach Tony Sparano's staff. All three were new to the staff last year.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles hired Todd Bowles to serve as the team's secondary coach. Bowles has spent 12-years in the NFL, including his first head coach experience, a three game stint as the Dolphins' interim head coach to finish this year. Bowles was the Dolphins' secondary coach and assistant head coach from 2008 to 2011. Prior to that, he coached in Dallas, Cleveland, and the New York Jets.

Any news on Cox?

I’d like to see him return.

You like Cox?
Alpha - that's bad....

LOL worth a cheap laugh i guess.

Hes cheap. What are you gonna do?
You get what you pay for....

lol

So your saying you don't get much?
Yikes...

Buffalos D wasnt that good last year… hope he does better with Linebackers than he does controlling a whole defense.

I would guess he is not coming back ... since we alread hired a LB coach...
Yeah they hired George Edwards as linebackers coach

Who was Buffalo’s Defensive Coordinator last year… And Buffalos defense didnt look that good last year ESPECIALLY towards the end of the season. So hopefully hes a better linebacker’s coach then he was a defensive coordinator

That is generally how a guy gets a defensive coordinator job...

IF you are a good position coach… someone gives you a shot at something bigger…

someone gives you a shot at something bigger

Cox?

lol

At least they kept Rizzi, ST was much improved with him coaching
I like that they are not bringing the whole staff from one place...

It is nice to see them taking coaches from everywhere. I hope they can all get on the same page.

bowles

Should get a big boy job in this league one day

what did he do to deserve that?

He talked about how great Sparano was… not too impressed with him to be honest…

Anyone know if they got someone for WR coach?

I’d of thought by now Marshall would have called his old wr coach and offered him a contract.LOL

Zac Taylor...

married to Mike Sherman’s Daughter!

... and they both know Tannehill....
We need a really good WR coach to teach the west-coast routes
Glad we kept Rizzi. He clearly improved the ST play, especially on coverage.

Edwards was a good pick imo. He had some success here (for example, when Taylor switched to OLB, he became DPOY under Edwards if I recall correctly). Also, the fact that he was not successful as a DC doesn’t mean he didn’t learn a ton of really good things through the experience. So you have an experienced LB coach who now has a bit more insight because he spent time as a DC. Also, he is familiar with the organization, so adjustment should be easier.

No opinion on TE coach because I don’t know enough to say anything, but Fasano had some good games.

Taylor is the assistant QB coach. No reason not to give the young guy a job (despite the nepotism). Who knows, maybe he will learn a thing or two. I hope we find an experienced QB coach who we can trust to develop a young QB….

Some people on different sites expressed concer about Krein because of conditioning issues we had last season. But, that is obviously not on him because of the lockout. I assume they kept him because the players probably like him and are used to him. No reason to mess with that as long as they are actually getting conditioned.

We need experience though at the remaining assistant positions. Especially QB and WR on offense, guys who know the WC system.

So far so good

now just need hire a young up n comer as qb or wr coach who has the potential to take over as OC when Mike Sherman leaves next year.
