The hiring of former Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Sherman brings a ton of experience to the staff, a guy who has called plays before, and a guy with head coaching experience to share with Philbin. Former Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle brings 11 years of NFL coaching experience, and has had one of the top secondaries in the NFL for the last nine years.
Great hires for both positions.

Thus far, this offseason has gone exactly as I would have liked.
Great hires at the HC, OC and DC positions. For the first time in a long time, I have a positive feeling about the direction of this franchise, and quite frankly, IM SOOOO EXCITED.
Can’t wait to see the changes they implement and the people they continue to bring in.

Not shocking, but I like the move...
Now if we can just franchise tag Soliai and trade him to Indy for Luck. Then we can get a retired Peyton Manning as QB Coach, sign Carl Nicks, LaRon Landry, Brent Grimes, Cliff Avril, and Vincent Jackson in FA…
Finhead83 - January 27, 2012
not much of a wish list finhead, sure you didnt forget anything
smokinjoe699 - January 27, 2012
Yeah, I forgot Jermichael Finley!
Finhead83 - January 27, 2012
LMAO!!!!
D0lphins4Life - January 27, 2012
Wow that's all you want?
I have us taking bowe and vjax to round out our Wr core, then we can get Blackmon in the 1st. We will have the best wr corps in the league, but cut Marshall he’s a cancer. Btw hartline sucks. We should also trade yeremiah bell and a 5th to NE for Tom Brady. They have a good qb in mallet and they need safeties. I’m bummed about losing the 5 th buy I want to keep it realistic
AnishB15 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Oh yeah don't forget quinton co
AnishB15 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Oh yeah don't forget, we need to trade Jake long for Jimmy graham
Who needs a LT anyways. We need to get a recieving TE. LT get you to 7-9 every season. Fasano sucks
AnishB15 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Oh yeah, let's also get that griffin kid in the 3rd and stash him on the Practice squad, he could be a gem
And we should have taken Matt Ryan over Jake long
AnishB15 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Now you're being greedy...
Finhead83 - January 27, 2012
Lol
AnishB15 - January 27, 2012 via mobile

PhinNomenol! - January 28, 2012 via Android app
Great hires for the Dolphins I like it
smokinjoe699 - January 27, 2012
Awsome hires, moving in the right direction.
Bakersfield Blowholes - January 27, 2012
Love the addition of Sherman.
Dont know a whole lot about Doyle, but Cincinnatti’s Def last year was much improved… So Im assuming that both were good moves.
Nice to see things coming together. Should show many improvements this year, Next up a QB
jdelsandro - January 27, 2012
Hasn't Cinncy "D" been in the top 10 the past couple of years.
And young as well, ut maye I’m wrong. Curious I’ll have to look that up.
D0lphins4Life - January 27, 2012
I think you are correct
But i do believe that they were noticed a bit more this year than any other cause they made the playoffs
jdelsandro - January 27, 2012
makes me feel a lot better about the Philbin hire
to have Sherman here to help install the offense.
Davone_Is_BessT - January 27, 2012 via mobile
btw does hiring Coyle mean 4-3?
Davone_Is_BessT - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Unlike a lot of others here I don't think it's a done deal (4-3)
In Philbins introductory press conference he said he doesn’t believe in introducing a scheme and making the players fit the scheme. He said he will evaluate the talent and use a scheme that will maximize their talent, accentuating the strengths while hiding weaknesses. Nolan ran more of a hybrid and it was said that the Dolphins were actually in 4-3 in 52% of their base defense formations (forget where I read that). It wouldn’t surprise me to see a combination like the Patriots use leaning more to the 4-3.
Agent J 78 - January 27, 2012
^^^^This
Miami defense was in name 3-4 but really was a mixed, a lot of plays (now I know 52%) was in 4-3 formation…
I think the main change to do was to move Misi to ILB and Dansby to OLB, we could have better results.
David Leal - January 27, 2012
basically I want to know what our base defense will be
If its 3-4 then we’re keeping Soliai. If its not then we’re not keeping him because he’s not worth 10mill plus as a 4-3 DT.
Davone_Is_BessT - January 27, 2012
I wouldn't be surprised to see Soliai let go and still use both
3-4 and 4-3 fronts (but call it a 4-3). If we resign Langford we could use Starks in the “NT role” with Langford and Odrick as DE. That is why I wouldn’t be surprised if we did not move up for RG3 that we aim for someone like Melvin Ingram that could play DE or OLB.
I guess we’ll have a decent idea after FA in March.
Agent J 78 - January 28, 2012
SWEET!!
MassFinFan65 - January 27, 2012
Good OC and DC!!
Now fill in the rest of the staff.
twinssdfan - January 27, 2012
2 Years...the clock is ticking.
If Jeff Ireland doesn’t get Philbin the players he needs to put this team in the playoffs within 2 years, we will be starting all over again. No playoffs in 2 years, and Ireland will be gone, the new GM will bring in his coach, etc…
dab415217 - January 27, 2012
So this confirms we'll run the WCO?
Patssuck456 - January 27, 2012
Wild Cat Offense??????
J/K….. yeah it looks like we will be running some sort of variation of the West Coast Offense.
Laces out - January 27, 2012
lol
Agent J 78 - January 28, 2012
let's hope
but it looks like Tannehill may be drafted by us
Kdog92 - January 27, 2012
It would be a good pick if Manning is here to mentor him
Patssuck456 - January 27, 2012
Shaping up rather nicely.
Getting excited about the next few seasons.
Wicklow - January 27, 2012
Love both additions. Especially Sherman.
If we land the Raven’s WR coach and the Jags LB’s coach, then that’s one heck of a coaching staff.
JP 23 - January 27, 2012
Although I haven't seen anything official -
Everyone seems to be saying that we do have Duffer as the linebackers and assistant head coach now too
Mosul_DolFan - January 27, 2012
That's another great hire. Jacksonville's LB's were the strength of their defense.
I’ve also heard Tom Rossely will be named the QB’s coach.
JP 23 - January 27, 2012
Why would duffer be asst. HC?
Shouldn’t it be Sherman?
AnishB15 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
My guess:
Duffer would be making a lateral move if the “asst HC” title is not assigned to him.
Davone_Is_BessT - January 27, 2012
No, the NFL recognizes only two tiers to coaches...HC and everyone else.
LB coach to LB coach and Ass.HC is still a lateral move from everything I have read.

Hollywood Dolfan - January 27, 2012
the article addresses a different topic
by your logic Doyle wouldn’t have been able to become our DC.
Davone_Is_BessT - January 27, 2012
If the Bengals allowed him to interview it is fine...it is saying that a team CAN block any assistant from interviewing for any other position besides HC not that they will.
The article is two years old but it still reflects the current rulings by the NFL and was the best explanation I could find.
Hollywood Dolfan - January 27, 2012
yes but there are nfl rules
and then there are “rules” teams run by.
They could have blocked the Doyle move but they didn’t so next time they want to interview someone, they won’t be blocked. So, the NFL only recognize Hc/everyone else, but most teams still will let you interview for a promotion, even if its not to HC.
At least thats how I understand it. Might be completely wrong. If I am, feel free to correct me.
Davone_Is_BessT - January 27, 2012
I think it is all up to the team...
The article I linked made note of the NFL rule saying teams HAVE to allow a staffer to interview for HC position but no others. The rest as I believe is all up to the teams…the NFL just says you don’t have to let the coach interview it doesn’t say they are not allowed to.
Hollywood Dolfan - January 27, 2012
That is correct but they did block it last year.........
Agent J 78 - January 28, 2012
Good Hires!
I cannot wait until the preseason begins and I can see how the dolphins play!
tpl - January 27, 2012
I looking more towards the the off season work outs so they can start to learn this right away !!
21Dave - January 27, 2012
Can we start giving props to Ross yet?
The guy for all the bungled mistakes in a team he overpaid for in all essence is trying his hardest to put an enjoyable product on the field.
Sure last year was a mess, but, in all respects, it was his first attempt at replacing a coach, other than an offensive and defensive coordinators, which btw he did fine with.
IMO, Ross just made himself look a bit smarter since the hiring of Philbin, considering this was his guy all along. I have a feeling that media pundets will be putting the Harbaugh thing to bed rather soon
dolphinfan4lyfe - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Correction
Fisher was his guy. But I agree Ross is trying. Now, Ireland has to do his part in the personnel department.
miamimike71 - January 27, 2012 via mobile
Nicely done Philbin!!
Have a plan an execute it.
Also I like that Todd Bowles wasn;’ forced on Philbin …. not that I think Bowles would not be a good DC, he might be … i just like to think Philbin can make these decisions – he’s the head coach he should be able to compile the staff that he is comfortable with.
scrappy the wildcat - January 27, 2012
Can we officially call the the PHILFIN now?
Hollywood Dolfan - January 27, 2012
No, but we can call the BFO
