The Miami Dolphins have made it no secret that they want to upgrade the quarterback position. In fact, during his recent Senior Bowl press availability, Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland stated that the team needs a quarterback who can "put his team on his shoulders." There is a ton of speculation floating right now that the Dolphins could be eyeing soon-to-be free agent Matt Flynn as that guy.
Flynn has served as the Green Bay Packers backup quarterback for the past four seasons. Working behind starter Aaron Rodgers, Flynn studied and became fluent in the Green Bay offense. Now, the Packers former offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is the Dolphins' head coach - fueling the speculation that Miami would make a run at Flynn.
Yesterday, on Rodgers' weekly appearance on ESPN Milwaukee, the Packers Pro Bowler stated, ""I think it's a strong possibility that [the Dolphins] would make a run at him. I think it kind of makes sense. Joe [Philbin] in that system, which I'm sure is going to be very similar to this system, and Matt having a great grasp of that and playing well in his recent opportunities. I think it would kind of make sense to bring Matt out there."
But, the Dolphins aren't the only team that Rodgers thinks could - or should - make a run at Flynn.
"John Schneider [Seattle Seahawks general manager] knows Matt and he's pulling some strings up there with them," Rodgers said. "I think that would be an opportunity for him up there. Those are probably, in my opinion, the two top dogs that would go after him. There's got to be at least five or six teams who legitimately should take a look at Matt and see him being an immediate improvement over what they have at quarterback.
"I think with a talent like Matt, he would have success in just about any offense you plug him into," Rodgers continued. "I think you could see maybe a little bit more immediate success in an offense he's very familiar with, so I think you have to look at Miami, obviously."
The Dolphins could pursue Flynn this offseason. However, the team is also thought to have possible free agent Peyton Manning, who the Indianapolis Colts may cut rather than pay a $28 million bonus, as their number one target. Miami is also pursuing former Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman to be the team's offensive coordinator, with the associated speculation that Miami could draft Aggies quarterback Ryan Tannehill in April.

would keep his evaluation to himself in hopes that people will under value him and not make a play for him. If philbin come out and praises how great he thinks Flynn is, that would only raise the asking price and make it even harder to land him.

money is the primary motive for almost everyone when it comes to choosing an employer. If someone offered you a significantly higher salary to do the same work you’re doing now, you wouldn’t consider leaving?

Miami would be a great landing spot for Flynn...
even though i would prefer Peyton. There is no denying that having Flynn come in to the same system would be the best opportunity for him to suceed, i just dont know how well he can play over 16 + games.
For me, his inexperience is my biggest concern followed closely by the proce tag for his services. I am just guessing, but i would think that he will want something in the range of 6 years 50-60 million. That is a high number if it is accurate and could be well worth it if he works out. Peyton will probably be much more expensive, again i am guessing, 6 years 80-90 million, but at least we all know what Peyton bring to a team. I also fully believe that peyton will only come back to play if he is certain that he will be able to continue competing at his ideal level.

Manning will probably ask for a 2-3 year contract,
just to gauge where he is physically in a few years. I think he’s got a couple of years left in him and then he’ll call it quits. That being said, even though Peyton is a bigger name than Flynn, you have to wonder how much he has left in the tank, how his health will be and also how he will respond to being in a different system than he has been in for his entire career.

I disagree.
If we have Philbin and Sherman, both of whom have history and success in a WCO, I’m assuming that we would be running their version of a WCO. Peyton has played in one system his entire career. To put him into our new system would be a mistake, but to change the system that has brought these two coaches success in order to accommodate an aging legend that may not even be healthy enough to play and could be one hit away from retirement would be an even bigger mistake.

Sherman's offenses were fine in GB
Especially given some of the turmoil their team was going through. They had so much changeover at RB and Driver was their only efficient WR during the only season in which Sherman’s offense struggled.

I don't think that's what he was getting at.
He meant that his offenses were good and not the reason that he was fired at either of those jobs. I’ve heard it was personel decisions that got him canned in GB and that’s good news because he won’t affect the personel decisions other than saying whether or not Tannehill is future franchise QB material.

i have to disagree with that
primariliy becuase it is arguable that we were in almost every single game last year. Improved QB play including more accuracy and better 3rd down conversions to go along with a QB who can read defenses and get the ball prior to taking 15 yard loss sacks would propell us to the top of the league.
We have a top 10 defense. We have a top 10 running game. We have great special teams. Improved QB play, and we are right their in the mix. Especially considering that the two teams in the superbowl this year. The giants, we should have beat them with our current roster, with peyton, definetly a win. The Patriots, well, we would match up quite better with peyton and would likely have the edge.
So yes, I do believe that we are a superbowl contender with peyton manning at QB.

Assuming two things
1. We are getting the pre 2011 Peyton, which is no guarantee.
2. The nerves can withstand not only hits and sacks, but even sudden jostles to the spine/neck from being pushed awkwardly. Can he hold up all year? Three neck surgeries are drastically different from an elbow, shoulder or knee injury.

i am operating under the assumption
that peyton will only come back to play if he is SURE that he can compete at a high level. According to many previous posts, the injury is not as severe as it sounds. Through appropriate rehab, it has been discussed that full healing is probable. I beleive someone said the other day that steve slaton had the same injury. If a running back can rebound from that injury and still be effective, i would imaging that a guy who takes substantially less hits could fare quite well.

Physical impact won't really have much of an effect on the nerves
They removed the portion of the bone that was compressing the nerve. As long as they heal, physical contact is likely to force that nerve to be damaged. If there was any more of a risk, it’d be a bone injury to the fused portion of the spine, but there are around 40 players in the NFL that had the same fusion, including our own Steve Slaton.

I love the fact that we’re bringing ties and mentality over from a winning organization. We tried the same damn thing with Dallas…only problem is, Dallas has been nothing but lucky since the late 90’s-early 2000’s. However, the Packers have just flat out dominated the league really since Farvre left. Love the GB attitude, love the personel coming over, etc. I’d L-O-V-E to see Sherman as out OC and Bowles as our DC.
I’m excited about this upcoming season!!! Then again, I’ve been excited about the upcoming season for the last 10 years….

If we take Peyton, I see the possibility of Trent Green redux. Green was really successful with KC but, like a Moss-less Culpepper his talents and accumulative injuries didnt translate successfully. I’d stay away from Manning if there’s the least doubt about his ability to come back at 100%.

Culpepper and Green with us. McNabb with Washington and Minnesota. 2/3 of Favre’s years away from Green Bay. All good to great QBs in their prime. None were very successful after leaving.

But be serious. Peyton Manning is a lock to be a first ballot Hall of Famer. Dante Culpepper was well past his prime before he ever came here, and Green was never more than pretty good sometimes on a Chiefs team that was pretty good sometimes. Both of them had a history of season-threatening injuries. Neither of those guys ever approached the level that Manning has played at consistently for the last 12 years, and before this season Manning had never missed a start.
Peyton Manning is in no way comparable to Trent Green or Dante Culpepper.
