The Miami Dolphins are continuing their pursuit of former Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman to serve as the team's offensive coordinator. Sherman was seen as the leading candidate for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching position, but reports are now stating the Bucs have signed Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano.
Sherman, who was Philbin's english teach in high school, hired his former pupil back when Sherman ran the Packers, and the two have remained close friends. Sherman runs a west coast style offense, which is what Philbin is expected to bring to the Dolphins this offseason.
Having come out of the Texas A&M job this past year, Sherman knows more about quarterback prospect Ryan Tannehill than any coach in the NFL. This would mean the Dolphins have the inside story on both Tannehill, and soon to be free agent Matt Flynn, who Philbin has coached throughout Flynn's NFL career.
The Sherman hire could be a short term move, however. As can be seen from his flirtations with the Tampa Bay job, Sherman wants to be an NFL head coach again. If he can come to Miami as an offensive coordinator, it could be the final stepping stone in returning to his desired position - as soon as next year.
Either way, Sherman is expected to be in Miami today, meeting with Philbin. There's a good possibility, the day could end with Sherman as the new offensive coordinator for the Dolphins - leaving current OC Brian Daboll to begin the search for his next position.

In a way I'm glad that Tampa did not hire Sherman (even though I do kind of do feel sorry for him for not getting the possition).
If nobody else ask him to be HC for their team the more likely spot to chose would be us for the OC position. If he does sign for OC he’ll should get the O over the hump and into playoff/ Super Bowl contenders for several yrs to come.

I don't feel sorry for Sherman
It means he’s coming to Miami and frankly, it’s hard to feel sorry for someone that has to “settle” for an OC position in a great city and get paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars.
Finhead83 - January 26, 2012
Sorry about that, did not know you cant show sympathy on this site.
Don’t get me wrong love to have him on the team, just don’t want him to go some where else as an HC in less than 3yrs. thats all.
phinfansc1980 - January 26, 2012
We can show sympathy on the site, but I'm just happy they passed on him. lol
Even if he goes as a HC somewhere else, hopefully we have some good assistants in place that can step up. There will also be some quality OCs available every year as well.

Be careful guys. Bacon says that's the line that he uses right before he says "As a matter of fact let me show you the one I have made up down here in my basement!".

Zing!! lmao
Alpha6 - January 26, 2012
Alpha you liar , you know you want to watch!!
21Dave - January 26, 2012
This is what makes me nervous to have him on our team. I want some stability….not have to go through another coaching search in another year. I’d rather keep Daboll.
tuscanitunr x2 - January 26, 2012
If fear of leaving for a promotion was a concern...
Then we’d stay away from the best quality coaches. I don’t approve of that at all. There will always be plenty of quality OCs or OC prospects out there. Let’s not shy away from one of the better options simply because he may be promoted soon. We’ll take care of that when the time comes.
Finhead83 - January 26, 2012
Well...
It’s not that I’m shying away from him because he’ll leave. I know he’ll leave. I just don’t want him to leave…or any OC or DC….after 1 year. So basically the way I’m lookign at it is…the players now have to learn a new system. That takes time. MS leaves after one year…who says the next OC will have a similar offense? I’m just worried about having a little continuity.
tuscanitunr x2 - January 26, 2012
The next OC would likely have a similar offense because Philbin would still be there.
The OC is going to run the offense the way Philbin likes it so not too much woulc change. There could be no change if an assistant was promoted to OC.
Finhead83 - January 26, 2012
True.......
but who knows who may not be with Green Bay when Sherman does leave……..
phinfansc1980 - January 26, 2012
At lest that worked with our new HC
phinfansc1980 - January 26, 2012
If we get a young coordinator he may leave in a year. Sure, if Sherman cms in he could leve after a year too.
That’s just what u call football.
BahamaDolfan - January 26, 2012
If Sherman's short term move means getting us to the 2012 playoffs and then leaving.....
Then count me in! I’ll chance another OC next year if all our pieces are in working order.
CanT0o - January 26, 2012
Correct me if I'm wrong...
But isn’t what we’re doing to Daboll a lot like what we did to Sparano? Interviewing candidates for a position that’s already filled? Or am I missing something? I know there’s usually a change of the guard when a new coach comes in…perhaps this is just something Daboll should have expected?
cordy_1971 - January 26, 2012
It's not uncommon.
The new HC will be given time to evaluate who he already has on staff and to see who is still available. It’s getting to the point where I believe Miami knows what they’d like to do at OC so I do expect Daboll to be fired soon, but it hardly ever happens right away. Other teams that just hired new HCs also have some of their coaches still on staff for the time being.
Finhead83 - January 26, 2012
... that, and back-up cuddle buddies.
Alpha6 - January 26, 2012
To my understanding, when a new head coach comes in and has “free reign” over his assistants, he will interview the current assistants as well as their possible replacements, even if they are already dead men walking. Bowles, to my knowledge, was interviewed by Philbin, but will clearly be replaced. It would be interesting to know if Philbin had or will interview Daboll. But it would be unfortunate for Daboll if Philbin knew there was no chance of retaining Daboll’s system just by watching the Dolphins play.
The Scarecrow - January 26, 2012
If DaBoll hasn't been looking for other work by now....
…then his next potential employer will probably want him to take a Wonderlic first.
mikem1224 - January 26, 2012
I am willing to bet if he is in fact let go
and doesn’t land another OC job that he will end up working for TS in NY.
Agent J 78 - January 26, 2012
They have already been reported as a destination for him as their QB Coach.
Finhead83 - January 26, 2012
I figured that is what would happen
I was kind of hopiong he would be our QB coach and if Sherman left hye could take the reigns but I am sure Philbin & Sherman will fill out a good staff.
Agent J 78 - January 27, 2012
LOL!
Alpha6 - January 26, 2012
I would rather just stick with daboll if he will leave next year anyway.
Not that i wouldnt appreciate it if he came and helped us to the next level, but i feel that Dabol had just finally started clicking for us mid season and i would like to see what he can do with a whole season of play calling and scheming. I know he was here all last year, but tony was making the calls up until mid season, and our offense turnied it around once dabol claimed more control.
Phinphinatic - January 26, 2012
and if Daboll leaves after the next season?
phinhead - January 26, 2012
Damn it Jim!!
I need stability!!
Alpha6 - January 26, 2012
at least we have this season to continue clicking and make a run.
Phinphinatic - January 27, 2012
Here is an Idea Mr. Ross, buy the best out there !!! Make them want to come here !!
