The Tampa Bay Times confirmed yesterday that former Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M Aggies head coach MIke Sherman has been invited back to Tampa for a second interview. So far, Sherman is the only known candidate to receive a second interview, making it look more and more likely he will be named the next head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Which, would obviously take him out of the running to be the Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator. Sherman and new Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin worked together in Green Bay, as well as both being on the staff together at Tulane. They are close friends, and Sherman was thought to be Philbin's top offensive coordinator candidate.
Of course, the Buccaneers also thought they were close to naming Oregon Ducks head coach Chip Kelly as their new head coach over the weekend, only to have Kelly walk away. And, Sherman being the only candidate know to be invited for a second interview, doesn't mean he was the only one asked back. No one knew Kelly had been interviewed, until it leaked that the team was close to signing him. They very easily could have other candidates in mind.

But, either way, Sherman looks to be a finalist, at least, for the job. The Bucs, however, have not called any of the other candidates they have interviewed, to inform them that they are no longer under consideration, according to the Times' report.
"Given all those scenarios," states the Times' story, "the one that makes the most sense is that there is a strong chance Mike Sherman will be the Bucs next head coach. At 57, he is an experienced, grizzled NFL and college head coach with an offensive background. He won four NFC North titles in six seasons and his undoing was his failure controlling personnel decisions. Sherman also would have the ability to put together a pretty good coaching staff, which is just as critical to the Bucs success."
As the head coaching search in Tampa Bay continues, the final decision could change the direction the Miami Dolphins go in their search for an offensive coordinator. Now it's time to wait and see what happens on the Gulf Coast.

so would this guy make a good OC?
HeatPhinat1c - January 25, 2012
I think so.
Finhead83 - January 25, 2012
He has in the past
Like the article states his downfall in GB was his personel decisions. He did not draft well. I would certainly not want him as a HC but am intrigued by him as a OC

he has in the past...so I think he'll be a good OC.

Time for plan B
Looks like signs are pointing to Sherman as HC of Tampa.
scrappy the wildcat - January 25, 2012
All signs pointed to McCoy being the Dolphins head coach
before they hired Philbin
phinhead - January 25, 2012
understood....
and I agree …. but they need to be interviewing other cadidates now until Sherman is either eliminated from the Tampa HC search or accepts the position.

Has Daboll been fired?
Would he fit in with this style of Offense?
I have not heard of any hirings yet, is Bryan cox still employed??
twinssdfan - January 25, 2012
Today is supposed to be interview day.
The team will really start trying to lock down the coordinators today, so you will hear about current assistants leaving starting today as well.
Kevin Nogle - January 25, 2012
Dolphins interviewing Kevin Coyle today as well.
I think the Fins are just waiting to see if Sherman gets the HC position in TB. If he is hired, then Miami will move on. I don’t know who they may target if Sherman goes to TB, especially since both Philbin and Sherman could be looking for similar assistants.

Thanks Mosul!!!
The OC and DC are important as our QB issue…………We need a Foundation to build on!!!
twinssdfan - January 25, 2012
I think/thought
Daboll was rumored to be heading to KC.

If it's between us and the Bucs, then we win.
No contest.
We have a 1000+ receiver and a 1000+ running back ready and waiting for whoever comes here. The only thing we’re missing is a QB and an RT.
ToastErr - January 25, 2012
We are offering an OC position
Tampa is looking for a HC… If he gets an offer from both teams who do you think wins??
DolfanPTY - January 25, 2012
OC vs HC
I think Tampa wins if they offer the job. If Miami was such an easy choice, Sherman would already be here.

Honestly why would my comment that gives the author of this article props for a great read be deleted? Because I said Omar and Armando couldn’t hold this guys jock? Really?

My bad wrong thread. A newborn and a 2 year old will do that to you.
mr1313 - January 25, 2012
To be honest...
I’d rather an older coach get the offensive coordinator position, providing he is the right fit and has the right philosophy, which I believe Sherman does have. We sign a young guy and we do well…they could be gone in 2 years time into a HC position. I think it would be wise to hire an experienced guy who can call the plays. Philbin said himself he won’t be calling the plays.

EXECUTE or else I have several pilots
ready to fly over the stadium, with banners, I cant believe the interest in the job. When I tell them what the job is they are ALL willing to take a pay cut.SFlorida is tired of the talk lets see some results. All these bloggers take time out of their busy day to post on here all their original ideas for getting over the hump and we dont even get PUBLIX coupons just DISSED.Posters we need a collective bargaining agreement for grocery coupons.

If you're trying to use Beaver-speak...
Fail! And it’s not up to Miami if Sherman accepts the job at the moment. It all depends if TB offers him HC.
Finhead83 - January 26, 2012
Even though it's not a lock it does look like Tampa Bay will end up with Sherman
According to NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, “many in the league” expect Mike Sherman to be the Bucs’ next head coach.
Sherman interviewed with Bucs brass for a second time Wednesday, and the St. Petersburg Times recently reported that there’s a “strong chance” the team will settle for Sherman after missing out on Oregon’s Chip Kelly. And make no mistake — hiring Sherman would be settling. He couldn’t keep a college job last year, and the Bucs would have hired Kelly if they had their druthers.

I’m starting to have a sneaky suspicion that if there isn’t a clear favorite for the OC position Miami may wait until after March 8 to see where Peyton will go. After all if we end up with Peyton he might as well be our OC.
kermit the frogger29 - January 25, 2012
Sherman was more successful in the NFL than in college
And he’d be going from HC back to OC. Some are just meant for OC. Nolan and Philips failed as HCs, but they’re damn good as DCs.
