Finhead's Ramblings: Super Bowl Edition

The first time I did my rambling, I stayed focused on how I feel the NFL could balance the passing game and give defenses some leverage by increasing the 5-yard illegal contact cushion to 10 yards. This week, partly thanks to the lovely pill as Percocet, I will have a bunch of different thoughts here in bullet format. You'll know the meds kicked in during this post if you see the repetitive use of any keys. Here goes!

  • I don't see why people think the 49ers would've been a better matchup for the Patriots. I believe the Giants have many favorable matchups against New England. Both teams feature a very good pass rush, but the Giants have capable safeties with Antrel Rolle, Kenny Phillips, and Deon Grant who can all help cover New England's TEs. The Giants could wreak havoc on New England's defense with Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, and Mario Manningham. I don't think Julian Edelman is capable enough at CB to slow down NYG. Beyond all that, a NYG/NE matchup features two of the three most hated teams by the New York Jets. It's fun to see their frustration.

Star-divide

  • I know everyone is worried about Matt Flynn because he's unproven. I am too. Just don't be overly concerned about his contract. People look at Kevin Kolb's contract and all they see is $63 million with $20 million guaranteed. What they don't see is that half of that guaranteed money comes in roster bonuses. Kolb has a $7 million roster bonus due on March 18th of this year and a $2 million roster bonus in 2013. If Arizona were to release or trade Kolb, the roster bonus would not count as dead money against the salary cap. Kolb is scheduled to earn $1 million in base salary on top of his $7 million roster bonus in 2012. If Arizona were to release him now he would cost $8 million against the cap because of his $10 million signing bonus. He would count $6 million against the cap if he was released prior to the 2013 league year. While Kolb would count $8 million against the cap because of signing bonus this year, they would also save $8 million because of his $1 million base salary and his $7 million roster bonus. In the end, Arizona walks away with no dead money. Similar deals could be worked with Matt Flynn. Please stop freaking out and thinking that such a deal would cripple a franchise. Teams almost always take precautions against that. Genius. If you were able to follow me through all this, even more genius. Geniuser!
  • Miami currently sits between $5 to $8 million under the cap in 2012. They have various ways to create more space by signing Jake Long and Randy Starks to extensions. Yeremiah Bell could be extended or cut in an extreme case to save money. Tony McDaniel can also be released. The Dolphins can also use an exception on up to 3 players worth $1.5 million to save additional money if needed. All of these moves could give Miami a lot more room. Miami can also carry forward unused cap from 2011 into 2012. I don't have the final numbers for how much Miami was under the cap for 2011, but as of August 2011 they had approximately $4.9 million in cap space. I'd estimate that based on moves made, Miami may be able to carry $2.5-$4 million of unused cap space into 2012. All of these moves could give Miami a lot more room. The Dolphins could free up around another $11 million or so with the exception, resigning, and rollover of the previous cap. The savings would jump close to $17 million if they released Bell and McDaniel.
  • All of the above doesn't mean Miami can go and sign Peyton Manning for $15 million and then also add Jermichael Finley and LaRon Landry. Those moves would eat up all the space Miami created and would leave no room for other UFAs and draft picks. It'd be great if it could happen, but it won't. Under the scenario above where Miami frees up $17 million and ends up close to $25 million under the cap (that is an absolute best case scenario), if Manning signed with Miami for a fairly generous $15 million for 2012, it would put us back to $10 million under with approximately $5 million required for draft picks. With $5 million left, that doesn't leave us much room. That won't get us players like Jake Scot, Carl Nicks, Michael Griffin, or even Cliff Avril. That gets us Wayne Hunter or Marc Colombo. It's not just about adding the best players, but it is also about trying to get bang for the buck. Carl Nicks at $8 million isn't bad, but some would prefer to have Jake Scott and Landry for $9 million combined instead.
  • Much like everyone dubbed the Dolphins as the Cowboys of the East, the Jets are quickly becoming the Dolphins of the North. Suckers... Here's to hoping Marc Colombo is a Jet in 2012.
  • Stephen Ross enters his third season as majority owner and just made his first personnel move in hiring Joe Philbin. Though most seem to like the move, many still think Ross is inept because of team failures prior to his arrival. Give Ross a chance. I especially don't get why there are fans that saying an owner that is also a fan makes a poor owner because fans often make poor decision. Those fans then go on and give their advice for how the franchise should be run. Hello Pot (not our Phinsider member Pot), this is Kettle.
  • Robert Griffin III is my top choice above all else in the NFL Draft. In case we can't land him, I'd love to have Justin Blackmon, even if we have to trade up for him if he falls to #6 or so. It just sucks that neither of them will likely fall to us. Is giving up a first and second round draft pick for Blackmon worth it? If we can't get Griffin, I'm leaning towards yes. Consider that with Matt Moore as QB, Brandon Marshall averaged 15.0 YPC, his highest since his rookie year, and caught 4 of his 6 TDs in the final six weeks of the season with Moore. Add in another playmaker at WR and suddenly I feel both Moore and Flynn have a chance with Miami's WRs.
  • Speaking of the draft, people shouldn't lock in the Rams for trading the #2 pick just yet. A lot can change. If Miami signs Matt Flynn and the Redskins pursue Peyton Manning or Kyle Orton, that could change the price on Griffin and suddenly the Rams don't have as much leverage.
  • If we projected John Jerry's stats while at LT over the course of an entire season and compared them to the same amount of snaps Marc Colombo had at RT, the stats would look very similar. I'd love to have Jerry be our future, but he played well at RG. He didn't play as well as some thought at LT. I'm all for Jerry competing for a spot at RG or RT, but having only Jerry and Lydon Murtha competing for the RT position in 2012 concerns me.
  • Jim Irsay, the Colts owner, is quickly tumbling downhill in the list of top NFL owners. Reports indicate that Ryan Grigson, new Colts GM, told Peyton Manning that it is not his decision whether or not Manning will be a Colt in 2012. Irsay will sit down with Manning and make that decision. So the GM has final say over all personnel decisions except Manning? You should never elevate one player over the status of your front office. Bad move, Irsay. Also remember that Irsay previously said if Manning is healthy enough to play in 2012, he will remain a Colt. I'm starting to seriously think Manning won't be available in 2012.
  • Mike Sherman may the leading candidate for Miami's Offensive Coordinator. He's also a candidate for the Head Coach position in Tampa Bay and Offensive Coordinator in Cleveland. I still think I prefer Clements, but I don't think Sherman is a bad option. It brings Miami a Coordinator with play-calling experience. Now, does it help the chance of Ryan Tannehill landing in Miami? Sherman was Tannehill's Head Coach at Texas A&M.
  • Going back to Philbin, I am curious to see what he can do with a RB like Reggie Bush. I am confident that Philbin can use Bush in many more ways than the previous regime did in 2012. I am getting excited to see how the team will be structured and perform in 2012.
  • I'm rather surprised Hue Jackson is still available. Being that Cam Cameron is not expected to return as Baltimore's Offensive Coordinator in 2012, I think Baltimore would be a great fit for him. It gives the Ravens their best shot to win before they have to replace a bunch of defensive stallwarts like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
  • I think I am up to 10 followers on Twitter, 3 of which are probably legitimate followers. Yay! Go me! That is all for this week. Back to the meds...

    what's your tweeter account?
    Finhead83 for that as well.

I don’t post updates a whole lot, but you can find links to some stories.

    I completely agree on Clements.

Philbin was interviewing the receiver coach in Green Bay for the OC position, so I don’t see why everyone is saying that Green Bay having some silent rule about not taking assistants with them when they move to another team would keep us from going after someone like Clements. He didn’t work out so well when he was OC in Buffalo, but… come on now… that was Buffalo.

    problem with clements

why would he leave GB when he is pretty clearly next in line to take over at OC? I mean, I love my dolphins, but you’d have to be an absolute idiot to take the reigns (and credit/blame) of our offense over the juggernaut that is the GB offense. and by all accounts, Ted Clements is not an idiot.

Because Green Bay has to agree to the interview.

Clements is under contract. Them having the unwritten rule means they will be less likely to grant an interview.

The Packers will allow coaches to greatly enhance their position – but when the Packers are expected to make Clements their OC, how does allowing him to interview with the Dolphins for an OC position (1) greatly enhance his position and (2) make any sense what so ever for Green Bay?

    Yeah, that makes sense.

I just thought that it would be a better position for Clements because he would be able to call plays here where as over in Green Bay he would have less responsibilty with the team. I also thought I heard that he was Philbin’s right hand man and that he would have liked to come with him so that the two of them could work together. I understand that he may be next in line for the OC job in Green Bay, but he hasn’t been promoted yet which makes me wonder why Green Bay is taking their time.

A team can block a lateral move, but I don't believe they can block a promotion.

    Contract or not.

If they're not under contract, they can't block it.

Much like Nolan going to Atlanta.

    True.

I’m just saying that if they ARE under contract, they can’t block a promotion under league rules.

    Ahh, correct...

But that is a promotion to HC only. They don’t consider a move from QB coach to OC a promotion. Teams can, and have, blocked moves like that. Chicago is notorious for doing that.

    Ok, didn't know that.
if you give them 10 yards of contact

almost every LB in the league could cover any WR. Give them 10 yards to get their hands on them and the LB would flatten the WR taking him out of the play. Not sure why I didn’t really think about this strategy before, but it would drastically change the way the game was played.

It would make it much more challenging for WRs, but they'll adjust to it.

Maybe the offense uses more motions to try and get WRs off he line easier, maybe they do something else. Either way, the offense would try to adjust and at least this wouldn’t increase injuries.

Edelman on Nicks or Cruz is a mismatch... he would be out of his league..

    They will eat him alive.

The Giants safetys got made look very incapable by Davis on Sunday,

Both were destroyed for the 49ers TDs. Sure half of that was bad playcakking, but as far as I’m aware it will be the smae person calling the plays for the Giants coverage systems in the SB.

Yeah both TDs were completely blown coverages...

I expect that A) the Patriots will try to exploit that, however B) the Giants know it was blown coverage, will watch the tape 50 times, and will hopefully fix it.

The first one was putting Rolle (4.5 40 time) on single man to man coverage on Vernon Davis (sub 4.4 40 time) with no help over the top. As well as being completely outpaced by Davis, he tried to jump what he thought was an out route (cardinal sin on an island), but it was a wheel and he got torched. Awful matchup the coach but his defensive back in and awful decision making by Rolle,
The second one was zone cover 3 (strong safety plays short zone in coverage and only one safety over the top), there was a deep crossing route and the safety could only cover one of the players, easy TD for the 49ers. The second one was more brilliant play calling by the 49ers exploiting the Giants reluctance to employ more DBs than anything else. But still the 49ers outfoxing the Giants, and it shows how exploitable the Giants are. Bellicheck or how ever you spell it is smart enough to exploit this.
HOWEVER, I would still love to see the Giants win this one.

    Great points

and that bit about Flynn makes me feel a bit better if we do pick him up. Also I don’t think Clements will be available for us anyways I think there is some unspoken rule in green bay that you can’t gut their coaching staff if you leave.

    I agree with Clements

I doubt he’d be here, but he’s just my preference. Even if it wasn’t for the “unspoken rule”, when he’s in line to be GB’s OC, they wouldn’t let him make a lateral move.

Totallly agree on Blackmon....he's the real deal

N if we can’t land griffin moving up a few spots to land a Player like that would be huge for us. Trading down wouldn’t be so bad either. Upshaw is looking like a beast so far in the senior bowl. N so is coples. Although I do disagree with ur opinion on the patsies pass rush or lack there of. They have no pass rush wats so ever. Can u name me there olb’s without lookin it up. There bad n that’s why Eli is gonna tear them apart….. I hope

If Flynn can take a " friends with ur coach discount" say

5yr 35 million with some incentives added. Then I’m all in. But we do have some quality free agents to sign. Langford n starks come to mind

    Starks isn't a FA.

He’s entering his final year of his contract in 2012.

I wasn't talking about NE's pass rush, I was talking about NYG's pass rush.
But u said both feature a good pass rush

    Which clearly the pats dont

I meant both teams as in NYG and SF.

I was comparing how the Giants match up to NE compared to SF.

LOL No worries. Honestly I re-read it like 5 times to make sure it was not me as I was tired.
    I'm claiming it was you...
See that's what I get for helping a brother out.
And as long as it makes sense now!

I just don’t want people thinking a Flynn signing is a franchise crippling move if he doesn’t pan out. It sucks because of moves we may have made on QBs (trading up for RG3, Tannehill or someone else in the 2nd, etc), but it isn’t because we’d be financially strapped. We could likely dump Flynn after one or two seasons without much of a cap hit.

People do not realize how most NFL contracts work. Some do still cripple a team but teams do all they can now

to avoid writing the contracts that way now and at the very least try and give themselves an out.

Where are you getting your cap # from? I've got us at $10 million under the cap
This will be a key#, to help in the up-cumming free agency ty as i was wondering just were we stood!
We are currently right about where we were at the start of last season because we haven't resigned our free agents and the $$ we paid them last season equals the pay increases for the players under contract this season.
purchising an oline is very costly, free agents & gonna be free agents are watching us, who's our QB?

Thinking that if “Manning” is here maybe 3-4 Super-Bowls get that QB a playbook, unless he is in fine tune with the system MF!
    “Matt Flynn”

I have our projected salary at about $114.3 million

Leaving us between $6-$10 million below. The salary cap is not expected to increase much, if at all, from the 2011 salary cap of $120.3 million.

So who do you think we re-sign that contributes to the extra $4.5 million cap hit from where we are today?
The easy two of them are Long and Starks, both in the final year of their contracts.

Long could rework a deal that gives Miami as much as $3 million in relief by himself and Starks could easily sign one for $1.5-$2 million off in year one. Yeremiah Bell is an option as well. I do expect Bell to either be extended or released.
Releasing Bell would save Miami close to $3 million and releasing McDaniel would also save Miami around $3 million. Those two releasing alone would total $6 million and we could save up to $4.5 million in cap. Beyond that, Miami can carry forward unused cap from 2011 into 2012 (I estimate between $2.5-4 million) and if need, Miami could use an exception on 3 players for up to $1.5 million that would create additional relief of that price.

    Finhead, you are confusing me.

Current salary cap hit with no restructuring, draft picks, or free agents signed = a Little Less than $110 million
Your projected salary cap hit = $114.3 million
    Difference = Approx. $4.5 million
I asked who we would sign that would take up an extra $4.5 million of our salary cap (Increase our cost not reduce it). You said we could restructure Long’s contract to gain up to $3 million in relief. Does this mean you are suggesting we can re-structure with Long and REDUCE his cap hit? If so, we would drop our current cap hit to <$107 million. Add in Starks and it reads like you are saying we can reduce their cap hit for this coming season, BUT your total Salary against the cap has gone UP by almost $4.5 million. SO which is it? I am not trying to find ways to reduce the cap hit (Which you seem obsessed with explaining to your fellow Phinsiders) but I am trying to nail down our cap space with no special strings attached (Exceptions, carry over, etc.). No argument at all about the idea of savings in 2012 via contract extensions for Long.and/or Starks

    Not quite...

Current salary cap hit with no restructuring, draft picks, or free agents signed = approximately $114.3 million.

I don’t know where you’re getting $110 million from. If you’re looking at nyjetscap.com, not all the salaries are correct. For example, the site lists Dansby as counting $11.325 million against the cap with $2.35 million as a signing bonus. Really, Dansby is counting $12 million against the cap with a $3.2 million signing bonus. Dansby has a $8.8 million base salary next year. Add that $8.8 million base salary with a $3.2 million prorated signing bonus ($16 million signing bonus over a 5-year contract) and you’ll see Dansby’s contract $700,000 less than his actualy cap hit. The site also didn’t into account the dead money owed to Will Allen (prorated over future seasons because it was after June 1st) because of his bonus money when Miami initially released him.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. I meant that restructuring Long and Starks would bring us close to $110 million because of the savings. Our cap space, as noted by ESPN, is around $114.3 million with no strings attached. That leaves us about $6-10 million (probably closer to $6 million) under the cap.

I adjusted the Jets cap numbers to include the accurate prorated signing bonus but noticed that they had a $200,000 roster bonus listed as well. This brings the total to $110.22 million not accounting for the W. Allen costs you mentioned.

Are you saying we owed Will Allen $4 million in bonus money when we released him? I only ask because ESPN’s number is an estimate with no breakdown whatsoever while the other numbers list every current contract in place. Obviously with an error or 2 but when refined the numbers are still coming up around $4 million off of ESPN’s number.

I used that as an example of one salary that I saw flawed

There are a few more and I also saw nothing about any bonus money to Larry Johnson, Igor Olshansky, Sage Rosenfels, Nate Jones, or Dante Rosario. I’m not going to go looking for all their contract details, but I won’t be surprised if you found a little bit of bonus money in a few of their contracts. ESPN’s number is an estimate, but so is the website you’re referencing.

Dansby never received a 16 million signing bonus. He received a signing bonus of 4 million and an option bonus of 6.1 million. Whatever was reported as incorrect. Will Allen never received any bonus money that would accelerate into 2012. His contract ran out in 2011. When Miami cut him his bonus money all accelerated into 2011. June 1 cuts only matter if the player has prorated money in his contract and his contract extends past the current NFL season. Most of those players you mentioned were all on deals that expired in 2011.

You can check a lot of sources...

Whether it is Rotoworl, Sportac, CBS, ESPN, or wherever you’d like. They all say Dansby signed a contract with $22 million guaranteed, not $10.1 including an option bonus. They break it down with a $16 million signing bonus. You really think Dansby would only get a $4 million signing bonus over a 5-year contract? That is obscene considering that Dansby was the top LB available and signed one of the largest FA contracts for a LB.

As for Allen, I do see that he didn’t have a signing bonus. As for June 1st, it doesn’t matter if the player is in the final year or not. It just spreads the liability for the team over the next two years. It doesn’t matter if a player is in the final year of his deal or if he has 6 years left on his deal, cutting a player after June 1st spreads the liability of the signing bonus over the next two seasons. Being that Will Allen didn’t have a bonus in the two-year deal he signed, the point is moot anyways.

Sounds like you are 100% correct on W. Allen but there is no way Dansby only got a 4 million signing bonus. Hell, Anthony Fasano got a $2.1 million signing bonus and he was in-house not the top FA linebacker.

Ironically, if you adjust the numbers you have at nyjetscap.com for the proper $16 million signing bonus you come to $200,000 more than the less conservative listing that Finhead did. Personally, I would count Dasnby as $8.8 salary + $3.2 prorated signing bonus +$0.2 million workout bonus for a total cap hit of $12.2 million in 2012.

Jason, could you please clarify some concerns I have regarding your cap figures?

Actually, I will keep this brief and accept that those numbers you have that are HIGHER than the numbers that I read elsewhere are accurate so this would actually yield less cap room if you are right than if you are wrong (I choose to ere on the side of caution). My main question concerns the number of workout bonuses listed (again most are higher than I can confirm so no biggie) especially the one of them (Reggie Bush) that is UNDER what I find elsewhere. My question is where did you obtain you bonus numbers?
My second question is where did you get your contract numbers for players who are usually listed as having undisclosed contracts (I.E. Incognito, Clay, Pruitt, Yeatman)?

Sorry, forgot to post the link to ESPN's projections for the AFC East as well.
