The Miami Dolphins officially hired Joe Philbin to be their new head coach last week, and, whenever a team hires a new head coach, an exodus of assistant coaches from the old regime usually is not far behind. That exodus has started in Miami.
Former Dolphins assistant wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard was hired by the Washington Redskins today to be their wide receivers coach.
But, he was not the big name of the Dolphins assistants. The status of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and interim head coach Todd Bowles are the most intriguing positions right now. And, as of now at least, it looks like both may be heading to new jobs next year.
Daboll is expected to either land a job with the Kansas City Chiefs or the New York Jets. Bowles has had several teams interview him over the last couple of years for head coaching positions as well as several teams looking at hims for defensive coordinator positions this offseason.
Bowles and Philbin met earlier today, discussing Bowles' position with the team. Reportedly, he left the meeting with permission from Philbin to continue looking for other opportunities, and a plan to meet with Philbin again on Wednesday.

Several assistant coaches are expected to move on from the team as well, including linebacker coach Bill Sheridan and offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo - who is expected to follow former head coach Tony Sparano to the New York Jets.
Philbin is expected to change the offense being run by the Dolphins, and few, if any, offensive assistants are expected to be retained. The defensive side of the ball could see some continuity, if Philbin does decide to keep Bowles, or could be completely transformed under a new coordinator. Cincinnati Bengals' defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle is thought to be a candidate for the defensive coordinator job.
Expect the Dolphins' to continue to see a turnover in assistant coaches as Philbin puts his stamp on the team, and fully transforms them into his team.

Let the purging begin!!
Any new HC should bring in his guys. Continuity isn’t important on losing teams. Change is important on losing teams.
ct1361 - January 23, 2012
This.
I definitely agree with you. Philbin seems to know what he’s doing and if he thinks there needs to be a change and he brings in his own people then so be it. I am 100% behind him and his decisions he makes. He wants to win just as badly as all of us want the team to win. I wasn’t blown away by Daboll anyways even though he was held back a bit by Sparano, but I do hope we keep Bowles around as our DC. He is a great leader.

Are we headed back to the 4/3?

You must change in order to survive.

Seriously...
So we are starting at the beginning again!!! Why can we never keep anything going, our Defense improves so we let or DC walk, our Offense improves so we let the OC walk. Come on Ross
rebelranger - January 23, 2012
so you would rather hire a coach
And force assistants on him, rather than letting him bring in the guys -and the system – he wants?

Also a GM !
wild zion beaver - January 23, 2012
With all due respect.....
I dont think you have the slightest idea of what you are talking about……. EVERYBODY knew this was going to happen when we hired our new coach… This has NOTHING to do with Ross…..
DolfanPTY - January 23, 2012
This is what happens when you get a new head coach so unless you wanted to keep Tony this is part of the deal.
texascowpunk - January 23, 2012
I hear you all...
My issue is that coaches build rapport with players and get them to start playing hard and understand their roles, when new coaches come in players have to learn new systems and coaches. Now this may be a good thing with a full offseason but sometimes it causes players to be lost on the field. I knew this was coming and really outside of Bowles I don’t care if every coach is fired, but I was hoping that the our DC and OC would be been retained so the players get a full year to learn and get better at their roles within their positions. I guess I keep remembering how much better we looked in games 8 on vs games 1-7, then again I keep forgetting how we didn’t have a true offseason. I am really happy we got a new HC now lets get the ball rolling on the rest of the staff.
rebelranger - January 23, 2012
The only way we could've kept them together would've been to keep Sparano.
And we didn’t let Nolan walk. He freely signed with another team. He had no obligations to Miami for 2012.
Finhead83 - January 24, 2012
Ross/Irealnd spent a lot of time picking the "Right" HC...now let the HC determine who can work with
which gives the best chance for success. Forcing coaches or coordinators may disrupt continuity!
MassFinFan65 - January 24, 2012
Reality sets in
People need to accept it at this point.
0-7 starts are unacceptable.
Losing records at home are unacceptable.
Failure to show improvement when big money is being spent is unacceptable.
Sparano’s tenure was simply unacceptable. Losing is unacceptable. It reflects on him. It reflects on his entire staff.
People who demanded Sparano be fired, change is here. This is what a new head coach brings. New people, new ideas, new philosophies, new everything. In some cases, new players…cause everybody on the roster won’t necessarily fit the upcoming plans. It very much is just like starting over. Heads will roll people.
Those coaches all worked for Sparano…and maybe they showed what they COULD do as the season wore on…but they showed it too late. Sparano’s gone and his people will be gone too…whether out of loyalty to him, or because Philbin will want his own people around him.
Maybe some fresh coaching perspectives will get more out of the team that we see next season. We aren’t starting from scratch. It gets better.
If it doesn’t get better…Ross will hire someone else. And they’ll bring in their own people.
mikem1224 - January 23, 2012
And the good thing about Philbin is...
that he have been around and know a LOT of coaches, so he putting a staff with his vocion will be rather easy for him.
Aleta - January 24, 2012
I am curious to see this develop... but still can't wait for FA.
Of course, this is just the prelude….

Yes... almost. But if you want to not be embarassed when in a car accident... ensure clean underwear... lol

That time of the year is it?
Agent J 78 - January 23, 2012
Ahhh....you know what has to happen if you want an omelette
This happens every time teams hire new coaches…that’s why these guys all have multiple teams on their resumes.
You want change you have to be prepared to deal with …..well, change

Change
can be unwelcome due to uncertainty. Truth be told, I’m a huge fan of Daboll and feel he is getting a raw deal, being he only had one year and you could see it starting to click. Bowles is a likeable guy, so I feel bad for him, but in a different way.
That being said, Coach PhilPhin took a look at these guys (and those released already) and was not satisfied by what he got from them. This is not to say he doesn’t understand the importance of continuity, but if they don’t meet his personal standard or fit his philosophy, it would be sabotage to keep them for the sake of continuity or fan service. I don’t like losing Daboll (or having lost Nolan, although that had nothing to do with PhilPhin), but I support the coach.
There may come a point where familiar Phins will also be down the door. I am quite fond of our roster (BM, Bush, Fasano, Wake, Dansby, Smith, Bell, etc), but if any of these guys don’t fit the philosophy or don’t justify their cap with benefits they bring, they may be wearing other jerseys next season.
I understand attachment, but we can’t ask for change in one breath and handcuff that change with what is familiar. I’ll be as disappointed as the next to lose those we find affection for of the team, but uniting under a new banner will require sacrifice. Let’s support the new coach, the new philosophy, new faces and embrace new results.
Phins UP!

There will be some kept I am sure
During his press conference Philbin said he was kept with a head coach change so he understand there needs to be some continuity. I would imagine that they would more likely be from the defensive side, especially considering Philbin is an offensive guy and our defense did alright.
Agent J 78 - January 23, 2012
This is a good thing.
Things may have been improving towards the end of last season, but not enough. The defense was picking it up but offensively we still underachieved. I’m a big fan of Matt Moore, but he still didn’t do enough to prove to me he’s a long term solution. His QB rating may have been high, but he still wasn’t putting up very many yards per game and we were still stalling in the red zone even after Sparano left. That being said, Daboll may need to go. I did like his taking chances on big throws and those big plays of 20+ yards were a welcome breath of fresh air, but I still see the offense as stagnant. Maybe shaking it up with our new offensively minded coach, getting a new OC and a new quarterback (maybe Flynn since he knows and has flourished somewhat under Philbin’s system and I’m not sold on Peyton being able to adjust to a new system) then our offense can catch up to our defensive progress. Then we will be contenders. I still think Bowles should be retained as DC if possible. He is a good leader.
SergeHimself - January 23, 2012
And I don't necessarily think that there will be many changes to our roster.
Barring maybe Vernon Carey, Soliai, and Columbo.
SergeHimself - January 23, 2012
So the Jets look to improve their team by hiring all the Dolphins leftovers?
Good idea Rex! lol
FinsDBess15 - January 23, 2012
hahahahahahahahahahah !!!!!!!!!!
good luck with that !

Kinda like
we were doing with the Cowboys the past few years? And that turned out oh so well.

So really, they're leftover Cowboys leftovers.

As long as he doesn’t bring in Meredith Rivera.

I wouldn't draft Blackmon if I were in charge,
unless he miraculously dropped to 8 or 9. That being said, if we traded up for him, I would have a huge shit-eating grin on my face for days.

Get DeGuglielmo out of here.
He’s probably as much of an “offensive line guru” as Sparano is.
JOE PHINBIN SAYS GTFO.

At least this is more interesting than a Pats/Giants superbowl...
right?
Tunaflipper - January 24, 2012
Ho hum....
Alpha6 - January 24, 2012
I hope things work out
We needed a fiery young coach like Sean Payton or Jim Harbaugh. This Philbin guy reminds me of a Cam Cameron. He may be smart, but he doesn’t seem like an inspiring coach like Payton or Harbaugh.
goheat03 - January 24, 2012
Yet.
Let him feel the power of taking the reins.
A young body doesn’t equate to a young mind.
(and verse visa)
Tunaflipper - January 24, 2012
Every HC was either an OC, DC, or SC before they got to were they are at now.
So let Phinbin have a little time to adjust; who knows we may have just struck gold (just need to see if it is dust or a nugget thats all).
phinfansc1980 - January 24, 2012
There are a few, like Sparano, that were never a Coordinator in the NFL.
Finhead83 - January 24, 2012
Bowles told to look
I doubt you’ll see bowles kept. He has been told he can seek other jobs.
tpl - January 24, 2012
I don't read it that way
I read it as he’s been given permission to keep looking. It’s not uncommon for teams to do that even if they had kept the HC because many don’t like to interfere with a coach’s chance to get a promotion. Miami may even allow him to look for other DC positions, but that doesn’t mean that Miami is looking to dump Bowles. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Miami bring him back actually. If he doesn’t find anything else, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him keep his position as Secondary Coach.
Finhead83 - January 24, 2012
The new coaches will
Need several new players added to the roster to make these changes effective next year.Dont let the doomsayers change your opinions, every year teams go to the playoffs that were losing teams the year before. The 49ers were 6-10 in 2010,in their case they had a 1st round QB a very productive RB and a lot of other players not playing up to their potential.A coaching change was very effective in their case. The Dolphins need more players and the ones they get in the draft will not make enough of an impact next season.Ireland can earn his keep by making Aquisitions in free agency, his best move yet was Reggie Bush.If he would like to put the banner flyers to rest, this offseason would be the time.
