When will this team learn about getting the proper message out? Sigh ....
You have multiple reports out there saying that Manning is the #1 Target at QB for Miami if he becomes available. Haven’t they figured out yet that you don’t make statements like that because if you fail to get your #1 Target (like Fisher) you inevitably get asked “Why” or “What’s wrong with your organization that you couldn’t land your #1 Target”?
Manning could be your #1 Target, but you don’t phrase it that way or leak it that way to the media. You say generic things like:
That way you have a fall back if you don’t land him. It is amazing to me that this organization continues to make such a fundamental error when dealing with the media and, by extension, the fan base.

We keep revamping the football side of operations
We shouldn’t stop there.
I agree with you I wish we’d get in front of these stories or at least address it….
Red Dog - January 23, 2012
this is also the season of smoke screens and misdirection
There’s nothing saying for sure that the Dolphins will really go after Manning. But, of the put the story put there, other teams might go for him.
If other teams go for him (like Washington), then they might now draft a QB early in the draft.
You are going to hear story after story about the Dolphins being interested in player after player. It’s the way the offseason works.
Don’t worry about it so much.
Kevin Nogle - January 23, 2012 via iPhone app
not*
Might not draft a QB early
Kevin Nogle - January 23, 2012 via iPhone app
I have no problem publicly stating that they are going after Manning.
Just saying that Miami is going after Manning is a smokescreen, if that is the plan. But you don’t need to raise unnecessary expectations by saying Manning is the “#1 Target”. Once you say that, and you don’t get that player, you open yourself and the organization up to a bunch of questions that you would rather not have to answer.
ct1361 - January 23, 2012
you called it mosul, smoke and mirrors ! the fin's are famous for it.
don’t beleive anything until they sign the dotted line !
daytonadolfan - January 23, 2012
This was exactly what I thouht when I heard the news.
I don’t think Ross is an idiot by any means but I do believe the mastermind in this was Ireland. Use the “dumb fan with money owner” to “leak” things like this and then drive manning’s stock through the roof while you quietly slip in on Flynn or RG3. And I personally think that the higher the Manning FA stock rises the lower Flynn’s becomes making him a more reasonable acquisition. Two factors are in play here if this is a smoke screen as I think it may be. One, Manning will be sought after even harder on this plus his own merits, two it makes the impression that Philbin may not be sold on Flynn which may in fact be the antithesis of the truth.
Hollywood Dolfan - January 24, 2012
You're dealing with the media
It could’ve been as simple as someone in the organization saying that Miami would first take a look at Manning to see his health (not as a #1 target, but to see his status) and the reporter took it and made it into a large story. It’s hard to blame a team for their messages with leaked information put out by reporters because you can never be sure how the message was meant to be conveyed and whether or not the information is even true.
Finhead83 - January 23, 2012
Organizations that are on message control what is "leaked" to the media.
I don’t see NE or Pitt make statements like this. Why? Because they control the message completely within the organization.
ct1361 - January 23, 2012
Things have been leaking out of Pittsbuirgh (Arians is the latest one)
As for NE, Belichick is the final authority on decisions and he’s just notoriously tight-lipped.

Loose lips sink ships.
…and his dad coached at the United States Naval Academy.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
Where there are many loose lips and many ships are sunk...
Finhead83 - January 23, 2012
Sadly, that may be true.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
Coming from another military person...
I find it strange that some Naval uniforms have the Seaman’s name sewn into the back of their pants. Why would someone need to look at another man’s ass to know their name? Just saying…
Finhead83 - January 23, 2012
I think it has to do with that expression, "Make a hole", that they're always saying.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
... and for laundry purposes....
“Make a hole” is for making or moving out of the way when going up and down stairs….
Alpha6 - January 23, 2012
That's what they WANT you to think!
Actually, my Dad was in the Navy.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
Oh... and I have Navy friends...
Soooo… I’m right, and your dad was giving you… well… the hole… lol
Alpha6 - January 23, 2012
Of course, saying Manning is the #1 choice isn't really giving much away.
If he is a free agent, then he is automatically the #1 free agent since Montana went to KC. Any QB needy team would have to give him a hard look. To me, all they are saying is that they are willing to look at the best QB available, and if Manning is available that’d be him.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
I agree that the Phins should be looking at Manning if he is available.
But don’t say he is the “#1 Target”. That sets expectations to high. Just say that the organization is interested. Don’t set expectations so high is all I’m saying.
ct1361 - January 23, 2012
Fair point.
It didn’t seem that big a deal to me, but I’m not as emotionally vested either.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
Congrats Kdog92 on the new role!
Well done.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
thank you very much
Kdog92 - January 23, 2012
whoever gets Manning via free agency should have the
OLine already in place because one play could be the last one for him with the injury he has,as far as being his last NFL game.I dont think the Dolphins have the Oline set yet,do you?If you do then we are not watching the same games week after week.
broxtone - January 23, 2012
I'd say you are at least 3/5 there.
Long, Incognito, and Pouncey are solid. Indy’s O-line isn’t that spectacular. Manning has a quick release, so you don’t have to give him tons of time.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
Uh hhh huhh huh
Manning has a quick release.
Fuhbawl - January 23, 2012 via mobile
Having said that I think Manning is +3 wins
To almost any team that gets him,but the caveat is he has to play all 16 games.
broxtone - January 23, 2012
Teams that won 8 or more last year
Are not included in my scenario
broxtone - January 23, 2012
If the phins get him
They will need a loy of plays with one or two step drops
broxtone - January 23, 2012
It's been news that Manning is gonna retire... heh heh heh
Damn dog… you’re high profile now.
First rec…
Alpha6 - January 23, 2012
awww...thanks
Kdog92 - January 23, 2012
You could be, too, if you didn't spend so much time in your basement.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
Or on his knees!
Finhead83 - January 23, 2012
ouch
Kdog92 - January 23, 2012
Hanging out with his monkey
Miamimaniac - January 23, 2012
At least he's not spanking his monkey.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
Yeah. I hear ya... lol
Alpha6 - January 23, 2012
BTW, do you have a box in your basement for Eli Manning?
Just wondering….
SlotMachinePlayer - January 23, 2012
Nope. But Tom Brady stopped by. Gave him the tour of downstairs. Monkey was soo excited.
Since Tom is a celebrity, I let the monkey out instead of Tom having to use “the” hole.
Alpha6 - January 23, 2012
Be careful what you wish for!!
This is not a great idea!!
