Miami Dolphins Coach Joe Philbin Looking To Fill Staff; Todd Bowles Not Leading DC Candidate?

New Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin is looking to build an "aggressive and attacking" football team. He has said he is not tied to a "west coast offense" or the 3-4 defense vs. the 4-3 defense. Philbin wants to build a team that wins - not one defined by a system.

In order to do that, Philbin will next be looking to build his coaching staff. But, the question becomes, who would Philbin consider to round out his staff?

The early speculation is Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland would like to keep former interim head coach Todd Bowles on the staff, making him the team's defensive coordinator. In fact, a report by the Miami Herald's Armando Saguero gives even more credence to that concept. Yesterday, Salguero reported that Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator had been the favorite for the Dolphins job, until he told Ross and Ireland that he would not look at Bowles as his defensive coordinator.

McCoy ran straight to the media, as soon as he learned that he was not going to get the job, to explain that it all came down to his desire to interview personnel other than Bowles for the job. But, now, reports are coming out that Philbin is looking elsewhere for a defensive coordinator, making McCoy's complaints seem petty as he leaves Miami and heads back to Denver, and hurts Salguero as well.

Philbin, according to NFL.com's Jaon La Canfora, is targeting the Cincinnati Bengals' defensive backs coach Kevin Coyle as a possible defensive coordinator. While Bowles has not been ruled out, Philbin is thought to be leaning toward Coyle as the leading candidate.

Star-divide

The Dolphins interviewed the Bengals' defensive coordinator, Mike Zimmer, for the head coaching position prior to hiring Philbin. Zimmer is under consideration for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach vacancy.

Coyle is thought to have been on the Eagles' radar last year, but the Bengals refused to grant the team permission to interview the defensive backs coach.

As for the offensive coordinator position, two names seem to be popping up as candidates. Philbin, the former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator, is thought to be looking at his ties from his days on the sidelines of Lambeau Field to lead his offense. Current Green Bay Packers wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett is a possibility for the position; however, former Packers head coach Mike Sherman is thought to be the leading candidate.

Sherman served as the head coach of the Packers from 2000-2005, hiring Philbin as an assistant offensive line coach in 2003. The two have remained close, as Sherman served with the Houston Texans as an assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2006 and 2007, then the head coach with the Texas A&M Aggies from 2008-2011.

With the Aggies releasing Sherman this past December, speculation is Philbin could bring Sherman back into the NFL. The interesting part of that hire could be the quarterback position. Popular opinion right now is that the Dolphins will pursue soon to be free agent quarterback Matt Flynn this offseason, reuniting Flynn with Philbin after four years together in Green Bay. However, the hire of Sherman could up the speculation that the Dolphins will draft Ryan Tannehill in April's draft.

Tannehill was Sherman's quarterback at Texas A&M.

Winston Moss is also considered a candidate

I am perfectly fine with Moss as well.

McCoy is just pissed he canceled his Oakland interview for no reason
That was dumb on his part

and even more dumb complaining to the media. That made me happy he wasn’t brought in.

McCoy

sounds like a whiny little girl now. How can you possibly know why you didn’t get the position, especially if you were not the final candidate? Go hug Tebow for some comfort. That’s two bullets we dodged.

Well...looks like my questions about whether or not he was pissed at not being hired were answered....lol
Also Chip Kelly is now the favorite for the TB position.
not anymore

chip kelly removed his name from consideration this morning.

Mike Sherman would be a great Assistant Coach/Offensive Coordinator

He was 57-37 as the Packers coach from 2000-2005, and a 2-4 record in the playoffs. Im sure they could do worse… Although im not exactly a supporter of Matt Flynn being signed, id much rather them trade up to pick up RGIII, if the Rams would be willing to trade the number 2 pick.. but if that doesnt happen, Moore did good for the second half of the season.. and if we improve our Offensive line and add a Defensive Pass Rusher in Free Agency or the second round of the draft I think we will be fine.. If we can get Flynn for backup money so be it but i doubt it…

Here's a name for you for the DC position Jim Tomsula

Defensive line coach for the 49ners.

Jack Del Rio

As much as most people don’t like the guy, he sure ran one heck of a defense first half of the season before the injuries started mounting.

agree he deserves DC consideration

why not interview.

Look guys no one knows if this Philbin cat will be sucessful or not – but I will say I like the way the guy handles himself. not just being a robot and jumping at putting Bowles as DC – i like that.

If Bowles interviews and wins it then great.

We need to look at better DCs

I’m really liking del rio

Del Rio in his one year as a DC in Carolina had it ranked

second in the entire NFL. He is also a former all-pro LBer that actually played for us for part of 1996 and retired because he lost his job to a rookie by the name of Zach Thomas. Bring him down here.

Shoot

what about ol’ Zach Thomas as a D cordinator he was coveted as one of the smartest LB’s to ever put on pads i think that might make him a good canidate all tho i would like hime to be a positions coach for a few years first

Let him be a position coach for some years first

Not all players can coach. Zach probably can, but he would have to learn a lot before he can step up and be a DC. I love Zach, but him being a DC next year would be a huge mistake.

Last I heard, Zach wanted to do scouting...
Yes he wants to get in to scouting.
I'm fine with whoever, I don't care about defense as much right now

I want to know what we’re going to do on offense.

We’re watching the worst defense and the 27th ranked defense in the super bowl. I want a good defense, but I want a better offense, so hopefully the focus is there.

Where does dabol stand in all of this

He ran a pretty effective off last year with a backup qb. I figured a good coach would recognize this n at least sit down with the man n see if they can work together. I’ll even go as far n say dabol was one of the top OC in the league

Philbin was suppose to be interviewing all the staff today
F*** this Aggie player/coach mess....find somebody else

oh and HOOK EM’

How about Pepper Johnson as DC?
yes - please interview him Alpha

worth consideration

Can't yet... he's in the Super Bowl competition....
F*** McCoy

I don’t believe anything he says if Philbin has full control of hires. I mean if he’s the leading canidate for the job you would assume they’d offer him the same deal as Philbin, not less. Anyways I’m glad we got Philbin and I wouldn’t mind if he kept Dabol since he did pretty good this year considering our QB going down and all. But we’ll see I trust Philbin will pick the right guy for what he needs.

no don't F McCoy

just let him vent – it will be forgotten in a couple days.

is Daboll getting interviewed?

you're right...

and yes Daboll will get interviewed just like everyone else currently on staff.

BOOM

If Payton Manning is available which i think he will be we do whatever it takes to get him in Aqua and Coral. then we draft Ryan Tanehill or some other QB late in the draft and let him be groomed by the all mighty Payton Manning.

I don't think there's such thing as a QB grooming a QB...

Sure, they can give him tips, but it’s much more likely the QB coach and the OC both groom that backup QB, if that is to be the case.

Also, if we sign Manning, I doubt we’ll then spend a likely 1st rounder on Tannehill. There’s too many holes right now. We could draft a QB next year. They have 3 pretty good ones in the first then. I really believe we need to focus on RT, OG, TE and OLB in this free agency and draft. NT possibly fits here, too, if we don’t sign up Solai. Then next year possibly QB, FS and SS. I would just love to see Ray Ray Armstrong in Miami.

we definitely need more UM guys on the team...

We currently only have 1 UM player… we have more guys from BYU then we do from UM… shameful… just shameful…how many UM players were in the AFC and NFC championship game?

9... and I heard there were 27 UM guys that made the playoffs this year ...

If you expanded it to Florida colleges … it would be even more … Why do we insist on drafting guys from UTAH?

22 players from Florida colleges in the AFC and NFC championships

And we just keep picking guys from BYU….

They'd certainly be used to playing and practicing in the heat.
Ray Ray Armstrong

I would love it if Miami picked up Ray Ray!!!!!!

Maybe in 2013

He’s going back to school next year.

I am talking late rounds

We could get a QB with descent fundamentals late in the draft, and have him sit behind Manning for 2-3 years wheile he is “groomed”. We have no choice but draft a OT in the 1st round then I see TE in the 2nd. There will be plenty of good pass rushers in FA (rumor that Mario Williamsmight be released) and either jerry or murtha can convert to OG. NT is going to be interesting to see how theyplay that one considering they already hed to FT Solia last year. SS and FS is going to be put on the back burner yet again this year.

Mario Williams

He is a free agent, but he won’t hit the market. He’ll receive the franchise tag and won’t be available.

McCoy

This does make McCoy and Salguero look bad. McCoy was foolish to cancel his interview with the Raiders. He definately is NOT ready to be a head coach. I expect Miami to franchise Soliai, so Miami should be able to get some draft picks in a trade. And Matt Moore might be traded also. If Manning is signed, I would expect him to be kept. Otherwise, Miami might be able to get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him and have young QB as the backup to groom. Devlin maybe.

Maybe all the bravado he displayed

in publicly announcing he blew off an interview with another team and proclaiming himself the lead candidate made the FO leary of him. Sounds a bit Rex Ryan-ish to me…

don't be so hard on McCoy

he wanted the job – he was going all in – i don;t blame him for that.

I AM FINISH WITH THE DOLPHINS...!!!

Great!

because the dolphin’s bandwagon gets driven straight into the Everglades! All aboard!

Loser

Fan cry baby

It's kinda funny...

My dad told me this weekend that he wasn’t going to be a Dolphin fan anymore also. I was very surprised …. However I did give him the same speech he gave me years ago about giving up on something and told him once you get on someone elses bus, you cannot come back… I think he is reconsidering his decision…

lol - good point

sometimes you have to turn the tables on dad …. he’ll come around … right now its easy to overreact and think the worst because the organization is on hard times no question about it.

is this Philbin guy the guy that turns it around – hell no one can answer that question either way at this point….all I can say is reading his resume’ he deserves his shot at it.
