It's Friday night and I feel alright. The party's here on the.....well, the East side. Because, the Miami Dolphins hired their new head coach today - former Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin.
But, that's not necessarily what this thread is for. It's a random live thread. Feel free to discuss whatever you would like - your week, the Dolphins, how the Lakers had a bad trip through Florida over the last two days, whatever.
Just remember, this is a Live Thread, and not a CKC. Keep it appropriate.
Enjoy!

Question is anyone else watching Jurrasic Park on AMC
Phinsphana - January 20, 2012
Ha, good to know
I’ll flip between that and my T-Wolves as they have a rare national TV appearance tonight
phinsphan85 - January 20, 2012
Rubio = stud
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
I'm watching the game...
Simply because I haven’t seen Rubio yet.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
Yeah, love his energy
that foul was BS of course. Hope they can put up a good fight while televised

wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
I like the hire
He knows the Packers system inside and out and I’m pretty sure hes bringing the while thing here. Two concerns (i don’t want to rain on everyones parade, but there are concerns)..
1) I’m not on board with Matt Flynn. At all. And I hope Philbin doesn’t bring him in here. I like Philbins resume, I like that he’s climbed up the NFL ladder quickly, but I would be against him bringing in Flynn. I believe that is the wrong move for this team.
2) how he handles the increased stress of being an NFL coach and trying to turn this franchise around while grieving over the loss of his son. I won’t begin to even pretend to know what that is like, but it has to weigh heavy on his heart. I worry about him burning out if he tries to put that on the back-burner so to speak. I wish him the best and hope he is able to compartmentalize his family tragedy and his new job.
Overall, I’m hopeful. Because if we can get a good QB, he’s proven he can build a winning gameplan around him.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
What's up chicka?
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
I think if he brings in Flynn, it says something.
He believes in him, and thinks he’s really worth it.
If we had McCoy or Bowles and they brought in Flynn, I would worry. But, if a guy who has seen him his whole career brings him in, he must know something about him.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
Agreed.
Unfortunately, the same was said with Pioli when he brought Cassel there. Unlike Pioli though, Philbin works directly with Flynn. Better knowledge.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Exactly.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
I still want RG3 and am not completely comfortable with Flynn.
But I am more comfortable with Flynn now that Philbin is here since he knows best about him. Like you said, if it was McCoy or Bowles, it’d be a different story.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Griffin
Is the guy I’d be targeting heavily. Philbin proved that he knows how to build a winning gameplan with a QB that is mobile and accurate downfield. Griffin is all of that.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
I agree....
I just worry about the cost. One draft with out a bunch of picks I’m okay with. If it becomes 2 or 3 drafts worth of 1s and 2s, I balk at that.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
Of course
Thats a ridiculous price anyway. If it’s 2 firsts and a second OR third, I’m good though. I make that deal.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
I can't wait to here him talk tomarrow!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
we may have sum stadic with the Seattle club err team & there gm!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
Not really buying that
I don’t have any belief in Flynn. If Philbin does, fine, but we talk all the time about head coach ego. It’s an ego thing bringing in Flynn, saying “I build quarterbacks, he’s my project, I can win with him.”
When the reality is he’s done all of his winning with Favre (HOF) and Rodgers (elite). I’m not saying he doesn’t get credit, because he absolutely does. But I don’t believe that his success with Aaron Rodgers means he’ll have success with Matt Flynn. Flynn stinks.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
Except he doesn't really have strings tied to Flynn so there is no need for that.
It’s not like Rex Ryan proving he can win with Sanchez. Philbin could make that same statement by drafting his own QB.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Which I hope he does
I want Philbins success tied to RG3. Because he’ll be a success lol
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
Me too, I hope Fisher helps us out afterall lol
phinsphan85 - January 20, 2012
I prefer that too.
But I do admit I’m a little more comfortable with Flynn now too in case we do go that route. Not the preferred route, but a little more comfortable.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Why no Flynn??
What makes you skeptical about Flynn??
He seems half way decent from where im sitting. Assuredly better than Moore.
MoronMormon - January 20, 2012
Assuredly?
You know this how? One game? I watched Flynn quite a bit when he was at LSU, the last time he actually got extended playing time, and he stunk..
We have seen this so many times in the NFL. A backup QB looks good in backup duty, is anointed a starter, and fails. I’m playing the odds.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
Hes been in greenbay 5 years & they have closely huvered in the top 10 offence every year!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
I know
I’m talking about Flynn, not Philbin. I like the Philbin hire. A lot. Just not as much as some others here
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
Moore is better??
Before he started everyone was saying he was backup quality too. hes done a bit better than expected dontcha think?? i thought he stunk with the panthers.
MoronMormon - January 20, 2012
didnt watch any of his work there!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012

Doesn’t mean they can’t develop but it means there was a lot of negative flags against them.

Really?
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
Its beter then Moron!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
I'm not aboard with Flynn either
phinsphan85 - January 20, 2012
Ugh hit "Post" prematurely instead of the comment box lol
I feel better with Flynn coming in with Philbin as opposed to McCoy. However, I’d still like to draft RGIII and use FA to fill other holes. I like what Griffin can bring to the table in today’s NFL. I’m not sure if I’d spend the money on Flynn while only seeing a couple starts a full year apart from each other. However, I believe Philbin is professional enough to know that his job would depend on how much stock he can put in Flynn, so if he brings him in he must be confidant enough that he’d succeed here. I’m just trying to see the bright side if Flynn does come here, though I’d much rather trade up for RGIII.
On your second point, I believe if Joe wasn’t ready to take on the challenge of HC he wouldn’t do it. He’s been around long enough to understand what responsibilities it will take to lead a franchise. I saw his quote mentioning how passionate the fans are, so I’m sure he understands the challenge and expectations we all have for him. That is a terrible tragedy he suffered, but the fact that he’s ready to move on with us makes me hopeful.
phinsphan85 - January 20, 2012
What your saying is you had a premature post
Phinsphana - January 20, 2012
Maybe. Idk even know what i wanted to say anymore

I do agree with the others
that I am “slightly” more comfortable in bringing him in with Philbin here.
Agent J 78 - January 20, 2012
Yeah I guess
I’m not comfortable at all, but I can certainly see why you could be hopeful that he would join his OC.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
I hope we bring him down to Miami
Just to make Washington think we are attempting to sign him so Snyder goes all in for him. lol

Agent J 78 - January 20, 2012
Cane stillworking!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
Bring Matt Flyyyyyyyynn.
Worst case, he’s the next AJ Feeley minus the 2.
BrandonGnarshall - January 20, 2012
Most likely case
He’s AJ Feeley. Honestly, why is everybody so high on him? When Henne was criticized, it was always “give him more time, you can’t judge a QB until he starts 25 games.” Now we want to rush to judgment over 1 game because it was a positive result?
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
I think it may have to do with some being afraid of giving away "too much" for Griffin
Even though if there’s anything I’d give a lot for, It’s a potential franchise QB. I like Griffin much more than Flynn right now.
phinsphan85 - January 20, 2012
Absolutely
He’s gonna be good
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
But I don't understand the tremendous lust for Flynn..
It’s not solely because of the price tag on Griffin, many people are really high on Flynn based on literally one game. It’s baffling.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
No, two games :P
That also happened to take place 1 year apart lol. Ugh gosh I hope Ross is stern about getting our own QB. I mean I’ll root for Flynn as much as I would for Griffin, but I really hope it’s the latter
phinsphan85 - January 20, 2012
Does anyone actually remember the first of those two?
I seem to remember a lot of people liked Hanie over Flynn because Hanie “performed well in a playoff game.” Now, one start later, and Flynn is the premier FA this offseason? Laughable.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
They more I read and hear....
I think Peyton may be an FA this year.
It will cost the Colts about $50 million against the cap to keep both Manning and draft Luck.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
this is what i was hopeing that they wood trade down!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
Well see
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
It makes no sense to me, that they would really cut him
But, then again, I don’t see how they would keep him either.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
I'm not sure
I hope they make a mistake and pass on Luck. But the Manning situation doesn’t concern me much because I’m not at all interested in signing him.
It might take a team out of the Griffin Race though, which would be a bonus.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
I would hope Miami at least has him in for a workout and a physical....
But, I really think that’s the big thing about Manning. If he is cut, I think he goes to Washington, which take the Redskins out of RG3.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
whats up with Seattle then!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
I think Seattle may make a play for Henne.
Or Denver.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
wa he dont like rain!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
I bet Sporano
pushes to get him in Jets uni, either this year or in two years when his next contract is up.
PhinNomenol! - January 21, 2012 via Android app
I don't see Manning in Seattle anyways.
Not his type of scheme and they do like Tarvarris Jackson. Don’t know why, but they do.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
I don't even like bringing him in
I just have a no leftovers policy lol. I understand how great he was, but didn’t he just follow his worst non-rookie season as a pro with missing an entire season with a neck injury? Maybe he’s done….
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
I'm not opposed to Peyton, but I still want a rookie.
I’d be perfectly fine trading for Griffin and then signing Peyton to a 2-year deal to mentor him.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
We aren't going to agree on the mentor thing.
I think you just waste 32 potential starts for Griffin. The best way for a QB to learn is to play, and we wouldn’t be throwing him into a mess like other teams have with rookies. Sitting behind Manning only reaches him how to get 8 practice reps and communicate with headphones on.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
& then there we go againgetting the wins yet not giveing any work to the rookies!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
He can learn a lot from Peyton.
I don’t exactly want Peyton, but I wouldn’t be upset by the move. Manning could teach a young QB a heck of a lot.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
I don't see what he could/would teach the youngster that a coach couldn't..
We all thought Pennington was gonna mentor Henne. And he would be the best mentor a young QB could have… Didn’t help at all. I think the mentor thing is waaay overrated and doesn’t happen at all the way fans think it does.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
You can only help so much.
But Peyton is a true student of the game and probably knows more about QB than most coaches. He could help a young QB adjust to the NFL and especially for a QB that isn’t used to making a lot of reads, he could help them read defenses and make progressions. Manning can’t turn a young QB into a HoF QB, but he could help them grow.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
I agree
There are small things that Peyton would catch. Things he can point out to finetune his game. Not every QB can teach, but Peyton is a consummate professional and you get the impression that he is a perfectionist. That’s why he got so much free reign, they KNEW he knew what he was talking about on the field. He’s be a great mentor for the kid, because his value goes beyond W-L.
PhinNomenol! - January 21, 2012 via Android app
But you also risk the rookie losing his confidence...
And, with the state of our fan base, if the rookie stuggle out the gate, we will start to hear people calling for him to be cut and to draft a new QB next year.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
Not Griffin
No way. It happens here because we keep bringing in shitty guys. Get Griffin, the fanbase gives him time.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
dream on!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
and the stadium is sold out
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
Sorry
our fanbase is not known for giving time to develop (unfortunately). Guys goes from potential to bum in one to two seasons. I hardly think Aaron Rodgers would’ve come in his first year performing like that. If we are going to be so critical, as a fan, we should at least not rush a guy straight onto the field from the draft and expect a superstar year one.
PhinNomenol! - January 21, 2012 via Android app
There wood be very little grace period
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
How do you figure?
You can’t go from past experience here because we haven’t had a guy nearly as talented as Griffin since Marino. Thats just fact… Did you really expect the fans to get behind Culpepper and Feeley and Harrington?
Little Nicky 21 - January 21, 2012 via Android app
Bitch mone & grown, frick quality beter be there day one!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
What about Henne?
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
The thing is, only 3 people really know whether our not flynn has what it takes
They are philbin, clements and mcCarthy. One of them is already on our coaching staff, snd another may be on his way.
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
could that really happen wow!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
I don't believe thats true either.
Nobody knows if Flynn has what it takes. He’s started twice in his career. There weren’t other NFL games that he played that only those guys saw. Practice is practice, and there are thousands of guys who were practice warriors. The only way to know if he has “it” is to see him do it consistently in games, and nobody has seen that.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app

Any news on who hes hiring for the assistant positions
I’d like to see clements and del rio
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Miami has to get permission from GB to hire Clements as OC.
They denied Clements to go to Chicago last year for OC.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Jermichael Finely and Donald Driver are both going to be free agents
maybe one will get franchised and the other could come here. Plus the franchise on one of them lets Flynn choose where he wants to go, which would most likely be here
southfloridamammalsfan - January 20, 2012
I don't care for Driver.
Much better FA WRs available.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
hopefully we draft a TE because Philbin was also a TE coach
southfloridamammalsfan - January 20, 2012
Same, I would prefer garcon
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Driver is #7 next season!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
37 yrs old!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
We need finely!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
he mite be franchised though, or sign a contract
southfloridamammalsfan - January 20, 2012
They greenbay might not want to pay after that last game!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
lol, he is too valuable though
southfloridamammalsfan - January 20, 2012
Yeah Jordy Nelson is a high value pickup!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
we need to find our version of jordy nelson in the draft
or maybe hartline will become it
southfloridamammalsfan - January 20, 2012
our slot guy stays rite where he is TY!

phinsphan85 - January 20, 2012
Better be before the heat game
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
I haven't seen a time.
Kevin Nogle - January 20, 2012
Also i think the west coast offense really fits our Wrs and RBs
our top 3 Wr are all possession receivers, and Bush will fit in great because he can catch the ball out of the backfield
southfloridamammalsfan - January 20, 2012
It fits Bess particularly well
He is a phenomenal route runner, and the west coast is predicated on precision routes.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
yup and the running after that catch too. Also Marshall played great in denver under the west coast offense
southfloridamammalsfan - January 20, 2012
Is there a TE worth drafting in the top 10? or first round if we trade back?
southfloridamammalsfan - January 20, 2012
Trade back, yes
Top 10, no
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
What do you guys think about adding garcon
And packaging hartline in a trade for RGIII?
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Done
Do it right now
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
Would this trade work?
8/9th overall pick, hartline, mcdaniel and our 2nd rounder for the 2nd overall pick?
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
No.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Too much or too little?
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Fishguts was asking for too much & offering far to little!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
Too little.
The Rams don’t have much need for McDaniel and their roster is full of #2 WRs.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
ha ha ha!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
ha ha ha!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
Ok
1st rounder, hartline, 2 2nd rounders?
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Slim chance.
Probably 2 first round picks and a 2nd. Maybe Hartline in there as well.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Thats too much
We are trading for rgiii, not luck
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
It's not cheap to go to #2 overall.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
That wood be stupid bess is much more valueable!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
If you believe him to be a franchise QB it isn't too much
Agent J 78 - January 20, 2012
2 firsts and a second
Is a good price. Hartline is a throwaway in this scenario. If we offer 2 firsts and a second, and they want Hartline too, it’s a yes. I’m not gonna lose out on RG3 because I got hung up on Hartline..
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
Very true, we have 2 hartlines waiting in Moore and Pruit
21Dave - January 20, 2012
I'll bet there are 14 Hartlines in this draft.
I’ve said before, I like him, and unless we find a clear upgrade, I’ll keep him. But if he’s the difference between RG3 and no RG3, he’s gone.
Little Nicky 21 - January 20, 2012 via Android app
Or really just about anyone on our roster.
Agent J 78 - January 20, 2012
I like Hartline....
but I agree. The guy makes awesome catches, but if he’s the final cog to get RGIII, he’ll be making those catches in St Louis/London (then in LA).
PhinNomenol! - January 21, 2012 via Android app
I'd rather Manningham or Meachem over Garcon.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Garcon should come cheaper though, and he is younger
I like garcons deep threat ability a lot, he would be a great target for RGIII.
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Meachem is still only 27.
Manningham is the same age. I actually think Manningham may be the cheapest of all them. I don’t see Garcon being any cheaper.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
I wouldn't mind manningham if he were to come cheaper than garcon
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
I love Hartline but I do that in a second.
texascowpunk - January 20, 2012
If it nets us RG3, all for it.
lol
Agent J 78 - January 20, 2012

Drewrey - January 20, 2012
Hey Rams fan here....
I was wondering…do guys see the dolphins trading with us to get RG3? If so we would need reassurance in case Blackmon isn’t there. Can someone give me the lowdown on WR not named Marshall (Ireland isn’t giving him up). Thanks guys
Rcoon1307 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Blackmon will look real nice on the otherside of marshall next to hartline!
wild zion beaver - January 20, 2012
I could see Miami doing it, but not giving up a WR.
Not because they wouldn’t, but because there are none they would need behind Marshall. STL is full of #2 WRs anyways so Hartline would be of little interest to them. My guess is STL would trade down and select Reiff for OT and then draft a WR in the 2nd or they’d have addressed the need in FA. Blackmon shouldn’t be available at #8 or #9.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Jacksonville would probably take Blackmon if he drops to them
So yeah I think he’d be gone before #8
phinsphan85 - January 20, 2012
Teams would be lucky if Blackmon slipped by Minnesota at #3 even.
Finhead83 - January 20, 2012
Hartline
Don’t know how familiar you guys are with the Rams, but is he more of a Danny Amendola type WR?
Rcoon1307 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Look below
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
I did. Saw... well, I'll wait to tell you....
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
One word: hartline
He started across from marshall and has played really well. He is probably our most consistent receiver. He won’t get big yards by going deep constantly, and struggles with YAC, but he has great hands and had earned the nickname “the magician” because he is one of the best receivers in the nfl at the sideline catch. He had decent speed, but wont be the fastest WR you can find.
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
The four names probably of interest
would be
Hartline – amazing hands
Wallace – good speed
Moore (not the QB, but if we get RGIII, you can have him lol)
Pruitt
All great #2 options with good speed and hands.

ANY offensive coach from the Packers is worth a look for sure! He will be really motivated to get to work and keep his mind off of other things
Rcoon1307 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
Would a 1st rounder, 2 2nd rounders and hartline be enough for your pick?
AnishB15 - January 20, 2012 via mobile
IMO yes...
But I think the Rams are seeing all this speculation that it is possible to get 2 firsts and 2 seconds…I’m afraid they’re gonna get a little too greedy and have to keep the pick. At that point we have to take Kalil bc Blackmon doesn’t have 2 value…maybe 4 but not 2.
Rcoon1307 - January 21, 2012 via mobile
Having the top OL since Jake Long wouldn't hurt either.
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
I agree completely.
Would much rather have Kalil….unfortunately I believe I’m the minority in st louis’s thinking lol
Rcoon1307 - January 21, 2012 via mobile
But look at it this way...
If STL can trade down to Cleveland at #4, they could ensure themselves either Blackmon or Kalil. That is a win-win with that move unless Cleveland trades up because they think Minnesota is a threat for Blackmon (they are). Then Cleveland selects Blackmon and Minnesota takes Kalil. Unlikely…
STL could trade to #4, ensure they get Kalil or Blackmon, and have two high 2nd round picks. If they get Blackmon at #4, they can possibly land another quality OT like Zebrie Sanders in the 2nd. That would give Ponder protection and a terrific WR. Kalil is a great prospect, but don’t you think Blackmon/Sanders would be a better option than say Kalil/Sanu?
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Oh...
Plus they could do Blackmon, Sanders, and then another high 2nd round prospect like Stephon Gilmore at CB or Janoris Jenkins if he drops. I’d give Minnesota an A+ in the draft if they can get Blackmon, Sanders, and Gilmore.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Kalil might be ready right away to be a top LT
but Riley Reiff is said to have a lot more potential and should be available at 8/9. :)

wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
I have been looking at a NT too now ... since we might wind up with Matt Flynn
Dontari Poe
405 lbs doesn’t sound like much… but it is harder for us guys with long arms… What I am impressed with is the 700lb squats and the 400lb clean… The guy will be able to move some people out of the way… If we have QB locked up… we might as well replace Soliai with someone who really can move people. I have seen some sites that put him round 1-2. Depending on how he does at the combine that could rise really quickly, or fall really quickly. I am thinking it will rise… Maybe we will still be able to drop down and still pick him up, or even get an OLB in the first and snag him in the 2nd…
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
Don't think too much of the bench press...
Mitch Petrus, Mike Kudla, Leif Larson, Broderick Bunkley, and Scott Young have the top 5 best bench press scores at the NFL Combine. Where are they now? Poe is a late first/early second round prospect and is a very good prospect. There is little chance though that he falls to us in the 2nd round. Plus if we have a 2nd round pick, that likely means RG3 won’t be in Miami.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
I am not worried about that ..
But the squat and clean is what impresses me .. That is the key to moving people out of the way and winning the battle at the line of scrimmage.
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
Even that doesn't mean a whole lot.
Vernon Gholston maxed out near 700 pounds with squats and did 20 reps of 455 pounds. It’s still much more about their leverage and hands. It’s not just about how much you can lift. If Poe can’t get use his hands well, he won’t win the battle at the LOS. It’s not that he’s a bad prospect, he’s a very good one, but those stats aren’t very important.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Gholston plays DE though ...
Who thought that bench press and squats helps you get to the QB? Only the Jets… He has rare talent … just nothing that was useful on the football field .. unless you could put an extra 100 lbs on the guy…
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
He played 3-4 OLB first.
Gholston was an athletic freak with his strength and speed, but he just wasn’t very savvy and had poor technique.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
agreed ... he was a bust ... it happens sometimes ..
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
yeah ...
I am thinking of what happens if we don’t go for RG3 now … just trying to be realistic… I still want RG3 … also looking at Melvin Ingram too … I wouldn’t be upset if we wound up with Matt Flynn then drafted Melvin Ingram in the 1st and Dontari Poe in the 2nd.
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
Here is
Melvin Ingram
A defensive lineman that they use on hands team, and who they have handed the ball to … sounds like a freak of nature…
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
To me, it all depends in the scheme we run.
My top choice behind RG3 is Blackmon, but he’s unlikely to fall to us unless we swing a trade. If we go into a 4-3, I want Coples. I also don’t mind Courtney Upshaw or Mark Barron (would prefer trade down for that). I’d also be happy with Reiff and ecstatic for someone like Claiborne. I like Ingram a little, but he still needs to improve his pass rushing technique. We should be able to trade down and get him. I hate to disappoint, but I really think it’s unlikely we get Poe in the 2nd. Cleveland and Washington would love to take him in the 2nd if he slips that far.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
I think Upshaw is a product of a really good system...
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
I don't think so...
He’s not a 15+ sackmaster, but he’s a solid three-down LB. He’s solid against the run and is good in coverage. He’d be a great compliment to Wake. He has good burst and great technique.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
I think we already have solid though ..
His name is Koa Misi… I want a freak of nature in the 1st round…
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
this in so many ways, teams will haft to game plan for & that changes the equasion!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
Upshaw is a much higher prospect than Misi in every category.
And there are no sure-fire freaks of natures in the first.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
You go for a freak that high ...
and you hope to strike gold… No one game plans around a “solid player” … if you are picking an OLB in the first round .. you want a freak of nature .. like JPP… you go big or you go home …
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
That freak can be Vernon Gholston.
And Upshaw can be just as good as Ingram. He’s not a freak of nature athlete, but he has the best leverage and hands of any OLB prospect in this draft. He also has great range and great instincts. The only thing he doesn’t do better than other OLB prospects is he isn’t faster. But again, he makes up for that with superb technique, tackling, and instincts.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
there is always that chance ... sure ..
but you need someone that can make a difference there.. someone that is a game breaker… you are not going to find a sure thing that is also a guy that teams game plan around.. We have a “solid guy” already…I don’t really see the need to go after another one … I don’t see much difference with Misi and Upshaw… Upshaw would be solid… SO WHAT … MISI is solid… who cares.. he is not going to be special though… I just don’t see that in him… maybe I am wrong .. but I doubt it .. he plays like a guy that benefitted from a really good system…
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
I do think teams would have to plan around Upshaw.
He’s probably the best compliment available to Wake. The dude is so solid in every aspect of the game and he could move everywhere on the field. He could do anything on any given play. That makes him a tough matchup for any offense. He is playing with good players, sure, but he is a solid piece of that team. You could’ve said Marcell Dareus was a product of the system. He’s done pretty darn good.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
but you keep using the word SOLID...
Deep down you know it … you just can’t bring yourself to admit it …. one other thing I will say about Gholston.. he was a Combine freak… not a game freak… just saying … but there is a huge difference I think …
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
Very true with Gholston.
I use solid in a very good way though too. I am reluctant to say great.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
jesus are we trying to save money on the coaches now!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
Do you see Baron as a FS or SS?
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
articulation is the spice of life!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
Barron can play either.
He’s a natural FS, but he has the range and zone coverage skills of a FS. He’s strong in run support and is a big hitter. I’ve been saying I think the future is having two Free Safeties instead of a FS/SS combo because of the passing game. Barron can play FS now and swing over to SS to replace Bell. Imagine a combo of Landry via FA and Barron manning the secondary next year. I’d be drooling… especially if we can land Janoris Jenkins in the 2nd.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
this is a need!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
That is the feeling I got in the scouting reports I have read
They didn’t mention him as a SS or FS specifically but the way the report was worded he sounds like a FS type. When reading his scouting report Polamalu kept coming to mind.
From what I have seen of him he would be absolutely sick next to LaRon. If no RG3 I would be ok with drafting back to around 14 or 15 and drafting him.
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
Barron truly is a fit for both.
He has a few flaws, but should still be solid. He sometimes overruns on plays (so does Polamalu!) when he’s in run support and he’s only decent in man coverage. He has good enough closing speed though that he can make up for mistakes he makes in coverage. He reads the QB very well also when playing in zone. I wouldn’t say he’s as highly rated as Eric Berry was, but I think he’s every bit as good as Earl Thomas was when he came out. I think he’s even a better prospect than Thomas actually because he can play either Safety position.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Our next Jake Scott? lol
I want RG3 in the worst way but someone like Barron would be great, great prospect in a position of great need.
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
I wouldn't want to compare him to Jake Scott...
But he’d be a great addition. Could certainly help covering TEs.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
My top choice behind RG3 ... is Luck..
but if we already signed Matt Flynn by the draft, we probably won’t draft a QB… I still can hope that we do… we will have to see who picks him up in FA… Maybe Washington will go get him .. and we will just have to hope the Browns are happy for another year…
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
On or about March 15th will probably give us a very good
indication which direction we’re headed in the draft.
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
Another thing that impresses me is the guy is 350 lbs and he seems like he is a worker..
That is hard to find with a big man like that …
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
I like watching athleats!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
Yeah he does look like a very good NT prospect
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
Me too!
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
I hate to burst anyone's bubble
but for those who want Flynn it’s looking like it won’t be that easy. Packers have begun talks with Finley about an extenstion, this means with Finley signed they are free to use the franchise tag on Flynn. Ask yourself are you willing to give up a 2nd round pick because that is what it will take. On the flipp side this could be a risk for the Packers because if no one takes the bait they can be caught holding a 15 million dollar back-up, but with a gang of teams needing a quarterback NOW I think Green Bay can get a 2nd or at worst a 3rd.
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
no way I am giving up picks for that guy...
I would rather trade my draft for a guy like RG3 or Luck than do that …
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
They've been talking with Finley for months.
And I don’t think it means they’re closing to using the tag on Flynn. That means they’d have to allow Ryan Grant and Scott Wells to hit FA. I haven’t seen GB’s numbers yet, but the franchise tag would most likely put GB awfully close to the salary cap if not over. If the Packers want to risk losing Grant, Wells, and others to FA and not be able to sign other players for the hope they can trade Flynn, they’re putting themselves in a bind. There are teams looking for a QB, but I don’t think any of them feel forced to trade for Flynn. There are good QBs in the draft and other serviceable QBs in FA.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
You probably know this, as you know most things football it seems
but the FT for QB this year will be 14.4 million. That’s a lot of money for a gamble.
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
Exactly.
That’s why I don’t think GB makes the move, even if Finley is locked up. It’d take days and probably a few weeks to swing a trade. By then, who knows how many FAs GB misses out on, including their own players. Plus Flynn could play mean, not sign the tender, and GB can’t trade him. Then they’re screwed.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
can they aford finley as well!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
I don't know. I haven't seen their cap numbers, but based on their struggles to get under the cap last year, I wouldn't think so.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Good point ^
Green Bay Packers
Current space: $7.6 million
Comment: Guard Josh Sitton’s new deal consumed about $3.7 million in additional cap space and he now counts $4.9 million against the cap
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
I wouldn't even sign him for more than 5 million per season
I’d much rather trade up for RG3 and pay him 4-5 million per season.
Plus I read somewhere that the Packers won’t FT him as it will eat up too much cap space and will limit who they can sign.
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012

Does Ireland want Flynn?
That is the real question
Patssuck456 - January 21, 2012
I would think that depends on the report Philbin gave them...
We will know what he thinks before the draft….
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
This^
No better scout for Flynn then Philbin.
texascowpunk - January 21, 2012
We'll know for sure sometime
between March 13 and March 20th.
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
Here's a name for ya how about Sherman as offensive coordinator
He has a lot of experience with west coast offenses, experience calling plays, and was a very successful HC in Green Bay for several years. Sherman can help Philbin adjust to his new position as head coach and Philbin can throw him a bone by getting him back into the NFL ranks. Would fans be dissapointed if Sherman and not Clements was our new OC?
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
*Mike Sherman
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
I have heard that being mentioned as well............. as long as we win I don't care. lol
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
Sherman wouldn't be a bad option. He's also an option for GB to replace Philbin.
I prefer Clements I think, but I have no problems with Sherman.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Let Sherman go to GB and we will take Clements.
texascowpunk - January 21, 2012
Does Miami resign Ingognito?
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
heck yeah....
You sign Nicks and move him to RG… gotta have your enforcer on the O-line … Someone has to be ready to headbutt an opposing player wearing a helmet at any given moment.. or else you lose your edge…
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
Oh man if we can get Nicks that would be sick.
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
How about Ravens' Ben Grubb?

Or Tennessee's Jake Scott.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012

How about Vernon Carey?
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
Didn't we restructure his contract last year?
I can’t believe they didn’t extend him with that .. I guess the writing is on the wall for him then… huh?
Jason Scott_90 - January 21, 2012
We didn't extend him though. It was an ultimatum.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Vernon Davis is a free agent alswo!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
Davis signed a six year deal back in 2010
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
Fred Davis is available though
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
One joint away from a year long suspension though...
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Out of the game back to finley then GreenBay did not cover there backside!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
FA that needs to go. He just can't stay healthy.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
what is he making this year?
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
He is making $3.3 mil in base salary in 2012.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
He's worth it.
I like the idea of Nicks but he going to be looking for atleast a 7yr $56 million dollar payday with $25-$30 guaranteed. Wouldn’t Grubs be just as good and come alittle cheaper?
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
Slightly cheaper
I think Scott is the best option.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
I see Fisher all over Scott
your right though he would definately be an upgrade and probably come the cheapest
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
I'm not so sure.
STL has bigger needs at OT and they’ll likely move Harvey Dahl back to OG, his natural position. They don’t have a huge need at OG. Plus he may want Finnegan and Griffin first to help shore up their secondary.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
How about FA Safeties?
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
Landry is the only one I really like.
Branch is a good option if we release Bell.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Michael Griffin, Chris Harris?
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
Griffin is a lot like Reshad Jones.
He’s very inconsistent. Chris Harris is a decent option. Better suited for SS if we release Bell.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Does Bell have a big cap hit if we release him?
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
No, we'll actually have a cap savings.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Personally I'd throw some big bucks at Dashon Goldson
but 49ners will probably lock him up
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
Its all a great big coverup!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
How many years can we ink his name to papper err contract?
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
Do we like any FA Linebackers?
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
If they don't FT him Mario Williams is a FA
Agent J 78 - January 21, 2012
I like Jarrett Johnson of Baltimore.
Spencer would be a decent fit opposite Wake in a 3-4. Not a big sacks guy, but he’s pretty productive. Just don’t count on Mario Williams to be available.
Finhead83 - January 21, 2012
Anthony Spencer
2007 Cowboy draftee (you know what that means) looking to test free agency, recored six sacks last season
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
or Jason Jones from Tennessee
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
Is he a FA?
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
both are UFA
Jones is unhappy with Gray scheme and possibly looking to move on and Cowboys are looking to let Spencer walk
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
... and this guy is strictly left side and Miami has Wake there....
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
with good coaching any guy can go to any side
but you need good coaching and good defensive schemes
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
who r we talking about anyways
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
J Jones....
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
J Jones is an freakishly good athlete
I’ve seen him drop back and cover TE, if we can get him we can use him all over the place left, right, up, down you name it.
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
from behind?
Wait, wut?
Alpha6 - January 21, 2012
lol.... but now that you mention it
I hear Jones does some of his greatest work from behind
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
Looking at the Free agent pool
to me it’s looking more and more like we should adress OLB and FS needs in free agency and OL, TE, etc. in the draft
kermit the frogger29 - January 21, 2012
who?
SuperDave75 - January 21, 2012
I'm out all on the flip!
wild zion beaver - January 21, 2012
i hope we keep Bowles still.
SuperDave75 - January 21, 2012
Well done Miami
Didn’t get Fisher, but got the second best prospect for the job. Well done Miami!
ImBlue - January 21, 2012
