Dolphins interim coach Todd Bowles interviewed for a second time with Miami on Wednesday. Bowles is one of three finalists for the Dolphins' head coach position.
The Miami Dolphins continued the search for their next head coach on Wednesday, interviewing two candidates for a second time, and scheduling the third finalist for a second interview today. Dolphins interim head coach Todd Bowles and Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin both met with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland in New York yesterday.
Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy was scheduled to make the trip to New York today. McCoy feels so strongly that he is the leading contender for the Dolphins' job that he removed his name from consideration for the Oakland Raiders' coaching vacancy, turning down their request for an interview on Wednesday. McCoy explained to the Raiders that he does not want to do anything to jeopardize his position as the top candidate for Miami's job.
Several leagues sources have stated that McCoy is Ireland's favorite for the position, while Ross is leaning toward Philbin. While Bowles is considered a possibility for the position, it's more likely he will be asked to stay on the staff as the defensive coordinator. Former defensive coordinator Mike Nolan was hired earlier this week by the Atlanta Falcons to serve in the same position with them.

Bowles has served as a defensive backs coach throughout his career, having never reached the coordinator level. However, he considered a top head coach candidate around the league, and, counting the Dolphins' job, he has been considered for five head coaching vacancies over the past couple of years. He has been with the Dolphins since 2008, and is a Bill Parcells disciple. Bowles has the only head coach experience - all three games he coached to end MIami's season - of the three finalists for the job.
Philbin began his coaching career as an offensive line coach, working his way up to the Packers offensive coordinator position in 2007. Although head coach Mike McCarthy calls the plays in Green Bay, Philbin is considered a strong candidate for a head coaching position. The Packers' offense has ranked in the top eight in total yards each of the last five years. McCarthy endorsed Philbin for the job yesterday, stating, "I think he would make an excellent head coach. I've said that before."
McCoy is an interesting candidate. He has been the Broncos' offensive coordinator for the last three years, having served in various offensive assistant positions with the Carolina Panthers for the nine years prior. McCoy was able to reconstruct his offense mid-season this year, changing from a tradition offense under Kyle Orton to an option based offense with Tim Tebow at the helm. McCoy has seen six 3,000 yard passers from his efforts, four times with Jake Delhomme in Carolina and twice with Orton in Denver. McCoy also knows former Carolina, and current Dolphin, Matt Moore.
Each coach has their strengths and their weaknesses. It could all come down to the proposed staff each of them could build. Bowles would consider keeping the strengths of the current Dolphins staff, filling in places he sees as needs, while Philbin could try to poach parts from the Packers. McCoy has worked most of his career with John Fox, and could turn to the Broncos for a large portion of his staff, but could also look to former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio to serve as his defensive coordinator. Del Rio served as the Panthers defensive coordinator in 2002.
Interestingly, there are reports that "anonymous" league sources have come out in the last couple of day, disparaging McCoy's candidacy for the Dolphins job. They point to his inability to develop Tebow into a pocket passer with stronger fundamentals, as well as the 1-4 start and end to the Broncos' season as signs that McCoy should not be made a head coach. They also point out that Denver's AFC West crown this year came, in no small part, thanks to Miami. The Dolphins attempted a two-point conversion against the Broncos in the fourth quarter, a conversion they missed. If Miami had kicked the extra point, they could have held on for a 16-15 win, rather than a 18-15 overtime loss.
These comments all come from personnel thought to be close to Bowles or Philbin, signaling their belief that McCoy will be the Dolphins lead candidate for the job.
The Dolphins are expected to hire a coach by the end of this week. Next week's Senior Bowl practices is seen as the pressing deadline in front of the Dolphins, where Ireland and former head coach Tony Sparano were usually seen sitting next to each other, scouting players projected for mid-round draft picks. It would be expected that the new head coach and Ireland would both be in Mobile, Alabama next week.

I think it's too close to call
I’d be happy with any of these three…I just want the coaching position solidified (sound familiar…could have sworn that was my thinking this time last year…) Our success next year is going to be as a result of what Ireland and Co. do in the draft and in free agency. Outside of Philbin possibly encouraging Matt Flynn to come in as a free agent, are there any upside to these coaching candidates from an ‘attract a free agent’ point of view? I’m thinking notsomuch….
cordy_1971 - January 19, 2012
Attracting free agents...
With Philbin, I think yes.
Second would be McCoy… with Bowles in third… and attracting few.
However, I think there’s more to be attracted to than just the HC.
Alpha6 - January 19, 2012
you can't go after a coach because of the possibility he brings a former 7th round QB with him that has played well in a few games, surrounded by an amazing team.
Hell, Matt Moore would look sweet in that team. You hire the coach that gives the best interview. That gives the best vision. That fits with your player personnel. That works well with the GM and owner. Only Ross and Ireland know who that will be.
BahamaDolfan - January 19, 2012
Not developing Tebow into a pocket passer?
i can’t blame that one on McCoy – that stuff is easier said than done.
at this point they need to hire someone – time is ticking and its not so easy to just throw a coaching staff together. How many decent 3-4 DC’s are available that anyone can name?
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Changing the offense to suit Tebow is his greatest accolade IMO.
I’d prefer Philbin though.
joel311 - January 19, 2012
Great coaches put their people in the best position to win.
What McCoy did with Tebow is phenominal. Could have been a lemon, but they made lemonade.
I think every coach has an idea of the guys that he would like to have, and that’s great as far as it goes. It’s a wishlist. At some point though, you have to deal with the guys you’ve got (can’t get THAT guy, have injuries, whatever) and put them in the best position to win. I think that’s just what McCoy did.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 19, 2012
I tend to agree with the coaching skill more than with the QB skill, as some believe on this one.
I think, (if McCot is hired away), that the next OC is gonna be more surprised by Tebow’s can’ts than his can’s….
Alpha6 - January 19, 2012
I don't disagree with you
however it’s a bit presumptous to think that Philbin would adjust his offense based upon available talent
Miamimaniac - January 19, 2012
^would not
Miamimaniac - January 19, 2012
Not saying he wouldn't. Just saying that it looks like McCoy has adjusted to the limitations of his team.
Of course with all of the weapons Philbin’s got, we really haven’t had to see him adjust. Not that he couldn’t.
SlotMachinePlayer - January 19, 2012
I just adjusted...

McCoy is riding Tebow wave
But if Oakland won their last game against the Charger McCoy’s name would not be in consideration. I jdo not think McCoy is right for the job no matter who you place blame for the under performing Tebow and I agree with this article on what they state about McCoy.
Joseph Chaisson - January 19, 2012
Coin flip
I really like Philbin and starting to llike McCoy……I would like Bowles as DC….
With Philbin there is the possiblity of Flynn…..just do not want another A.J. Feely……….With McCoy….after what he did with Tebow..could he use his skills on Moore or re-sign Henne and with a deep ball threat?
We still need to draft a QB, but we have more needs to contend.
I guess it will be up to Ross and Our G.M. Ireland to figure out….
twinssdfan - January 19, 2012
Helpless
It’s such a helpless feeling listening to all the talk on these candidates. In the end, none of us know whether a Philbin or McCoy will be the next Sean Payton or the next Cam Cameron. And how do we know if Bowles is the next Mike Tomlin or the next Wade Phillips? At this point I suppose I’m leaning toward Philbin, especially if he snatches a few GB coaches to come and join him in Miami. Who knows.
douglaskoehne - January 19, 2012
That's one of the reason I am leaning more towards Philbin:
The reason I am weary of Philbin is Matt Flynn.
Agent J 78 - January 19, 2012
McCoy or Philbin
I think Philbin can open up the passing game but this could take time to get the right QB if Flynn is not the guy. McCoy could do great things to our OLine and let Bush and DT carry the team. I’m ok with both but would like Philbin more.
HvvK - January 19, 2012
I like Bush and DT
but I much more prefer a predominantly passing offense with some running. Maybe a 70 30 mix, or 60 40.
PhinNomenol! - January 19, 2012 via Android app
Philbin a decoy
Al Davis, before he became senile, used to bring in coaching candidates for the sole purpose of trying to gain a leg up on the team the candidate was presently coaching for. I wonder if one of the reasons Philbin is being considered is to learn as much about Matt Flynn to determine whether he would be worth a long-term and expensive investment. However, our front office is probably not that smart.
CJS55 - January 19, 2012
Good that you know this...
Please don't forget us little folks here, when you're hired as GM to replace IrelandAlpha6 - January 19, 2012
I dont see what McCoy has done.
3,000 passing offenses are nothing compared to the new standard, that is 5,000 passing yard team. Philbin is a coach on a superbowl winning franchise. They do awesome with their wrs. I really hope we get Philbin. If we get McCoy, im going to be pissed.

but not with Bowles as DC. bring in someone else, preferably with 4-3 experience.
Davone_Is_BessT - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Hey can I ask why u want McCoy or Philbin?
Goon305Boy10 - January 19, 2012 via mobile
well, of the choices left
I prefer McCoy. He’s young. He’s confident. he’s led a top 5 passing offense AND a top 5 rushing offense. He knows how to play to his players strengths.
Philbin is old and has yet to prove anything without McCarthy and Rodgers. I can’t get over the fact that he was an oline coach. id rather have McCoy who is a former qb and qb coach.
Davone_Is_BessT - January 19, 2012 via mobile
People forget Philbin was also Tight End coach, and was a tight end himself.
But I’m starting to lean to McCoy too. I hope this FO is right whoever they choose, otherwise it’s bye bye Ireland.

Philbin is my choice. Evidently not Ireland's.
But if Ross likes Philbin and he’s the owner, and we wind up with Ireland’s choice, what does that tell you about who’s running the circus?
CanT0o - January 19, 2012
I don't think it tells you anything.
Ross values Ireland’s opinion. It means they sat down and talked it over, what each liked about their preferred candidate, and why the didn’t prefer the other’s.
It could also mean that McCoy changed Ross’ mind today during his interview.
Kevin Nogle - January 19, 2012

Flynn
I will admit I’m not an expert on coaching decions, or anything else but IMO getting a coach sooner the better, It’s important that Ireland have that coach whoever it maybe next to him by senior bowl. Now having said that IDK how you can’t see the potential in Matt Flynn, which means Pilaban is our best chance out of the three at really winning next year, Moore can be backup, and use the draft/FA’s to fill the rest of our needs, RT, a stud TE and another good receiver. We Are A Good football team underrated, I belive had Moore started this season with no lockout we could have made playoffs, the team came together, it just took awhile, but I’m willing to bet other teams did not want to play us at end of season,Go ask a jets fan LOL… Point is we are closer then a lot of people on here think, at least that’s what I think……

PAPHIN4ever - January 19, 2012 via mobile
I agree!
Miamimaniac - January 19, 2012
I think that it is entirely possible the front office could be showing their hand in the draft with this hire.
If they do pick McCoy, who’s strongest piece of work has been with tim tebow, does that mean we are looking strongly to another running qb this year. Maybe RG3. If McCoy is signed, I am really expecting a strong push for RG3 and a similar type offense with him, reggie, and daniel thomas. Hopefully this offense will heavily feature some vertical passing routes as well. As long as the guy isn’t fist pumping for field goals and playing for overtime, he’s ok with me.
Youngstown_Phinatic - January 19, 2012
As long as the HC is in place by tomorrow so he can hopefully
get at least his coordinators in place prior to the Senior Bowl.
I am ok with either Philbin or McCoy, both will need some solid coaches to surround themselves with and hopefully no out of touch ones like Dan Henning.
Agent J 78 - January 19, 2012
I want Philbin but why does it feel like Ireland will worm his way into getting McCoy?
MassFinFan65 - January 19, 2012
Why does it have to be Ireland worming his way to McCoy.
Like I said above, Ross and Ireland will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of all three candidates, and decide which one is the best for the team.
Also, McCoy could very easily make Ross lean towards him after today’s second interview.
Kevin Nogle - January 19, 2012
Maybe poor choice of words....still sour about the Zimmer issue!
& yes I believe there is intensive discussions pro and against each candidate…..who knows Bowles may win out and surprise everyone!
How do you feel about the overall strength of our HC list???
I was listening to the Herd on ESPN XM radio this AM and they were wondering what happened to the Dolphins with the fact that non of the candidates actually have NFL HC experience…why wasn’t Billick approached?
MassFinFan65 - January 19, 2012
The more I read about McCoy the more I am warming up to the idea
of him for HC!
MassFinFan65 - January 19, 2012
I preferd Zimmer too (has that thing you cant really descirbe when you know people listen and follow you)
but McCoy doesn’t seem terrible, and that’s a slight upgrade

FROM THE ARTICLE
IF this is true then i take acception to Ross’ methods. Personally i hate sugar coating – bluntness and honesty are attributes to look for not be afraid of in a HC candidate IMO.

I like the guy.
I think people get way too caught up in what a guy did X’s and O’s wise when looking at a first time HC candidate. IMO those carry far less weight towards his eventual success or not then if he is a leader. Does he have that aura. Do people respond to him and his methods. Can he motivate grown men to run through a brick wall for him. Those are the things I care about most. They all have some skins on the wall as a coordinator or coach to get to the point that people will interview them. Its the other parts of their personality that I care about more.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
I am warming up to the idea of him as a HC...he does seem to have that Presidential Aura
which makes players & staff respond to him….I sometimes pass judgement too quickly because I am very intense when it comes to the Dolphins!
MassFinFan65 - January 19, 2012
Yeah and since none of us know its best if we keep and open mind. Sometimes the no names are your best bet.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012

Being a HC in the NFL isn’t really about X’s and O’s. It is about what you list above. The X’s and O’s are the responsibility of the coordinators.
HC’s need to motivate. They need to command the room. They need that “aura”.

anything FISHER wanted give twice as much to McCoy.
dang – i am really looking for somehting to be excited about guys.
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
LOL Settle down there wild man.
I really like the guy and would be thrilled if he were the selection but not ready to give the guy full control.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
NOONE gets full control
I like Ireland making the team decisions. I say the next person that requests full control….
Ross hires someone to slap the hell out of him!
PhinNomenol! - January 19, 2012 via Android app
LOL
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
Hes a first time guy. I bet he gets somewhere in the 4 mil a year range. If he proves he is worth more down the road he will get it.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
okay good point
you don;t have to give up the farm when no one else is interviewing him.
I want a leader – a real on not a puppet – not a yes man
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Well the Raiders tried to interview him and he told them no as he was concentrating on getting the Miami job.
Now when he says in the presser (assuming he is the guy) that Miami is the place that he wanted to be we know it to be fact ad not lip service for the sake of good PR.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
MCCOY!!!
I like the guy – he wants to be here.
i seriously prefer him over philbin now and I hope they get the deal done.
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
seriously why on earth would anyone touch Pee Wee Herman
that’s like touching Alpha
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
Well... I found Enhalen with Kdog....
Alpha6 - January 19, 2012
He's quite protective of his little friend.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
wow
Who taught bacon responsibility?
AnishB15 - January 19, 2012 via mobile
Me and McCoy wish a buck was still silver!!!
GET IT DONE IRELAND!!!
Meet McCoys demands you freakin pussy!!!
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
LOL I am sure he has zero real demands and will just take what is offered. He is a first time HC.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
"F" X's and O's
I want a guy that can make the building shake when he yells!!!
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
I can make you do that, if I'm behind you....
lol
Alpha6 - January 19, 2012
Wow. How is it that I am still shocked at the things that you post?
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
He would lose his edge if you weren't
Agent J 78 - January 19, 2012
LOL So I should ignore him?
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
lol brother....
Alpha6 - January 19, 2012
What?
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
I want a guy who can rip Fisher's mustache off him
………………..and shove it straight up his CAN!!
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
No you don't. Only a Ryan would do such a thing.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
I want a guy that when Ross says "good morning"
he shoots back “piss off old man”
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
No you don't because that would be his last day as HC.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
c-mon TCP
I was overstating for affect – you know what I mean
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
LOL I know.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
you want Zimmer aparently
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
lol
a little too upfron and honest there Mike
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
lol
Alpha6 - January 19, 2012
I actually read somewhere that Zimmer will be a lot like Rex with the mouth. I am not really a fan of that either.
I think that kind of crap catches up to you like we now see happening with the Jets as they self destruct from within.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
I dont mind a mouth per say but there is a limit
when you luck into the playoffs your first year because the colts sit Payton Manning, dont say your the best team in the league
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
Yeah I don't like a mouth attached to an arrogant A-Hole.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
i am not saying Rob Ryan - but I think Zimmer would have
been great
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Rob's defense sucks most often
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
But if he is a Ryan clone then maybe not........
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
Especially when that arrogant mouth has to put a foot in it all the time
But with Rex that’s by choice
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
Or
a mustache attached to a mouth attached to an arrogant A-HOLE!
PhinNomenol! - January 19, 2012 via Android app
okay guys - when Harbaugh slapped the Lion's coach on the back so hard
that he almost started a fight …. who was thinking …. MAN we almost had that guy??? ….. I know I was … I mean i kinda don;t like Harbaugh now – he’s like one of those guys you hate when he’s on the other team but you LOVE when he’s on your team – Like Pete Freakin Rose man
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Honestly I like what Harbaugh has done as a coach but there is no reason to be a dick to others just for the sake of being a dick.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
that did seem like a bit of a dick more
the guy is obviously an alpha male …. no offense to our Alpha
bottom line is football players love that us against the world mentality though and Harbaugh seem to have created that in Frisco
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
I agree but I would have had a lot more respect for him if he had come out and said something to the affect that
he got caught up in the moment and no harm/ill will intended.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
thats what I'm saying ......
you would love him if he was HC of Miami guranteed – but hate him for any other team ….. thats how good coaches work.
he’s a dick no question about it … but a good football coach
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Yeah I suppose. I know that the Cowboys fans tired real quickly of Rob Ryans mouth.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
doe's anyone know how the interview went
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
No but there is speculation as usual.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
BADA BANG!!!
6 YEARS
5.5 MIL PER
CATERING OF HIS CHOICE FOR ROAD GAMES
TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE FACILITY PROVIDED BY THE TEAM
FINAL DECISION MAKING POWER ON ALL DRAFT PICKS/FREEAGENTS
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
You think their gonna give a first year coach final say
I mean they should but not likely
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
no that part is BS
but I am liking McCoy now
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Agreed he has that edge
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
Official Bitch-Slapper on payroll
Ross has hired Brock Lesner to be his official bitch-slapper. Any requests for full control will be handled accordingly!
PhinNomenol! - January 19, 2012 via Android app
You let Lesner leave your room?
Alpha6 - January 19, 2012
Only after
he agreed to slap your monkey. Enjoy!
PhinNomenol! - January 19, 2012 via Android app
Looking at the positives here
With McCoy as HC we’re almost sure to get our first round QB! Tim Tebow . (OK I didn’t say it was this year’s first round QB). Watch for it. LOL
CanT0o - January 19, 2012
Bring in McCoy
Draft best available players
and have him build a system around the team instead of the other way around.
That article was cool it swayed me.
that and because McCoy looks more like a badass than Philbin.
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Seriously dude
You bored at the end of work and killing time while waiting to go home?
Agent J 78 - January 19, 2012
He is McCoys agents brothers buddy from the gym a few years back. Let him go....
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
pretty much - i am drinking the Kool Aid today
i figured it’s better than bitching like I was doing after they missed out on Fisher.
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Missing out on Fisher has turned in to a blessing IMO. He is now adding a bunch of coaches that I don't think much of.
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
Missing out on Mularky was a blessing .....
missing out on Fisher was a bummer – but I am over it.
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
Best way to be
I was “meh” with Fisher.
Agent J 78 - January 19, 2012
No missing out on Fisher was a blessing because he would have come with a terrible OC that the Jets just fired. NO THANK YOU!
texascowpunk - January 19, 2012
lol
There had been a few times where I came back and there were like 15 new comments and like 9 by you on McCoy. Just found it kind of funny.
Agent J 78 - January 19, 2012
Guys - I am officiating Hoops tonight at the High School
I will come back to celebrate the McCoy hire with you later
LATER!!
Scraopy
scrappy the wildcat - January 19, 2012
C Ya
Phinsphana - January 19, 2012
Thats It Bowles
will take the defensive cordinator job as long as they get another HC.If its a former O cordinator it makes you wonder how long the current offensive cordinator is signed for.
broxtone - January 19, 2012
Pretty much indifferent on the three
If anything, go with Bowles and spend the money that Fisher would have cost on a top flight OC. At least that way we maintain some kind of continuity on defense.
BobLoblaw113 - January 19, 2012
Out of the three...
Bowles, he knows the players the player know and respect him. Anything associated with Green Bay and especially Denver reaks of band wagon and riding the wave of certain individuals. They need to choose someone soon, which sucks because I think the is a better canadate out there.
Joseph Chaisson - January 19, 2012
A coach that would continue to keep a great D and...
Will strongly go after Peyton Manning and draft Kellen Moore http://espn.go.com/college-football/player//id/232560/kellen-moore who is also compared to Drew Brees-ish. blank">http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1019532-kellen-moore-analyzing-his-future-in-the-nflI think that manning will help Moore function as a franchise QB this will also help,us keep the #9 draft pick.
Joseph Chaisson - January 19, 2012
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1019532-kellen-moore-analyzing-his-future-in-the-nfl
Joseph Chaisson - January 19, 2012
Bleacher report is like the National Enquirer of sports reporting.
texascowpunk - January 20, 2012
lol
Good analogy
Agent J 78 - January 20, 2012
indeed
Patssuck456 - January 21, 2012
Why not Miami?
I don’t understand why the Miami Dolphins never seem to want anyone from Miami. Even back when THE “U” and FSU were dominating, they never drafted any of the great players. Now, there is two candidates out there (Winston Moss, Rob Chudzinski) who both played at Miami and are young and hungry but don’t even get an interview. I don’t get it. Can someone please explain this for me? Wouldn’t one of these hires spark some excitement in the community?
