This is an open thread so feel free to discuss various football and non football subject. Please keep in mind that this is a front paged open thread and not a CKC. As such remember to keep the subject matter and the pics as close to PG as possible. That means you too Alpha! Feel free to vote in the poll below and hopefully it serves as a starter point for some clever banter and spirited debate. As always please keep politics and religion off the table.
I expected some spirited exchanges, banter, and a lot of jokes about Alpha and Nicky. Sadly, none thus far. I guess I’ll go ponder the meaning of life.
At some point, all QBs have no experience. Griffin has all the tools necessary to be a franchise QB. All of his issues are correctable through good coaching.
Yeah, but it's not that hard to get someone to say "no, your feet should move like this"
Since Griffin is a hard worker and very smart, he’ll pick up the coaching. That was one thing many people forgot about Cam Newton. They complained he came from a silly college offense and he ran too much. What they forgot is that Newton is a hard worker and wanted to succeed. That’s why he played well this season. Griffin will be the same way. People will complain about his offense or whatever. What they will forget is that Griffin is a very hard worker and very smart as well. They will literally cry the first time he gets flushed from the pocket and he completes a perfectly thrown pass for a TD from 40 yards away. I know I will.
Leadership, work ethic, intelligence, accuracy, arm strength, high character. The only knocks on him are his size and his college offense. He’s easily 6’2" which is tall enough. He can be coached on footwork and reading defenses and that stuff.
If NFL experience was a pre-requisite for success at QB, most teams would never have a franchise guy. Being a backup doesn’t give you experience, it means you aren’t as good as the other guy. We would be taking Flynn on nothing but potential, so I’d rather get the guy with much, much greater potential.
heard all day today on espn radio about a possible powerplay from the Luck camp. If Indy keeps Manning he may pull an Eli and I would go Ditka on this and give up this entire draft and whatever else they wanted. Any takers?
We still sucked. LT’s are worthless if the guy the are keeping healthy stinks.
Here’s an analogy. Right now, we have a million dollar safe, but it’s empty. Would you sell that safe for a million bucks, knowing you wouldn’t have a top of the line safe to keep it in?
For me the answer is yes, because I’d rather have $1 mil than an empty safe
Give Moore a year with being “the guy” in the offseason, draft a QB in the 3-5th round range (Wheeden?), and sign an experienced back-up like Jason Campbell or Kyle Orten to compete with Moore.
But if we improve our QB … we will be 10x better on offense.. I am focused on bare minimum:
1. franchise QB
2. franchise NT(this is not Paul Soliai, but a realy franchise NT)-Antonio Garay PLEASE???
You’da you’da Bess, you’da you’da Bess, you’da Bess we ever had, Bess we ever had. I came up with it when that song was popular, you know for all of two days it was
Of all the teams at the bottom of the draft... we are in the best position to trade away picks..
We need the least. We really are lacking one position that can be filled at the top of the draft. Can you honestly tell me that if we offer 2 full drafts that would not be enticing to a team like the Colts that already have a franchise QB and desperately need to rebuild? Plus if we give them our 1st round pick next year they could always trade their 2 1s and get Barkley next year, without alienating the guy that was their entire franchise for the past 14 years.
really? So if we get 10+ years of elite QB play … 2 full seasons is too much to give up for that? 1st round picks are not even in the league that long. Most 7th round picks don’t even make it off the practice squad…. and those are the good ones.
How many MORE seasons of mediocrity and disapointment are you willing to put up with before we get a franchise QB? We are not going anywhere UNTIL we get that guy. We are going to waste another 13 years waiting to find that guy that no one else saw to replace Dan Marino. We got lucky to draft a QB that low that turned out to be that good. But it doesn’t happen MOST OF THE TIME. What else do we need really? Think about it… seriously.
I don't think it would take 2 full drafts to move up that high
We would have to give up a big time player. Trading away 2 full years of drafts would seriously damage your franchise, especially if Luck was a bust. One draft would be acceptable, but two is too much. Especially since we could get a QB in the 2013 draft.
A QB. How do we get a real QB? We either have to be worse than any other team(which is really hard to do), or you pony up and go get your guy. I am not saying it wouldn’t be a sacrifice. But most scouts agree this guy is the best QB to come into the NFL since Peyton Manning. He is on a different level than most of the guys in the draft and maybe even the NFL. If we do that … give up 2 years of draft picks, then have a franchise QB to build around for the next 10+ years… you pull the trigger and cry about the draft picks you lost on the way to the Super Bowl. Otherwise we can try to hold on to our picks and suck for the next 10 years… wait… didn’t we already do that???
Like we are crippled now by NOT HAVING A FRANCHISE QB???? How about all the picks that we used but wasted anyway? Pat White, Patrick Turner, Donald Thomas, etc etc etc. Ted Ginn Jr(+family). How about 2nd round picks we have given for another team’s backup hoping that he was really a franchise QB.. only to find out.. he was in fact.. just a backup
To keep a 1st round pick? really? A proven guy you are trading for a guy that could be bagging groceries in a year? I would rather trade draft picks than proven guys. No way I trade Jake Long. If he has one year left and I don’t think we have the cap to resign him.. then maybe I consider letting him go for a high 1st round pick… and a 2nd.
So you are willing to trade away two drafts for a guy that could be bagging groceries in a year...
but not willing to trade Jake Long? If you trade him, then you can use your first rounder in 2013 to find… a left tackle. In my scenario, you could draft Luck and find another LT in this draft.
There is no upside to trading away two drafts for an unsure thing. If the player is worth trading two drafts for, then he’s worth trading Jake Long for. We can find a good LT this draft, or even another draft.
basically what you are saying is that Jake Long is worth more than Andrew Luck
and at this point, I’d agree because Luck is unproven. But he becomes the QB everyone thinks he will, then he’ll be worth more.
The problem is that you don’t need a Pro Bowl LT to win games. Long has been voted to 4 Pro Bowls, been named All-Pro at least once. And yet we are still a bad team. Of the four remaining playoff teams, none of them have elite LTs. You can win in this league with a average left tackle and an elite QB. You can’t win nearly as much with an elite LT and an average QB.
And if we can get a good LT as well as Luck, then that would be better than just having Long and crap at QB.
We don’t have a QB … so yes… I am willing to give up the farm to try to get it. We have been trying other things for the past 13 years to try and replace Marino, but nothing else seems to have worked. We have wasted the past 13 years and not even been close to sniffing the Super Bowl. When we had Marino we were always 2 minutes away. Sometimes we came up short, but we were always in it. Call me crazy, but I am willing to do anything to be in that place again.
If you are willing to do anything, then trading Long should be considered
If we could trade Long in a deal and still draft Luck and Martin or Reiff to be LT, we’d be just fine. And if one or both of them bust, then we are no worse off than what we are now.
If the front office thinks RG3 is the guy… AWESOME… but don’t tell me that you didn’t do ANYTHING this year because you didn’t think RG3 was the guy and it would have taken too much to get Luck. YOU MUST CHOOSE ONE Mr. ROSS. I feel like I have seen this same movie over and over again for the past 13 years. I think the only way to get out of this same crappy season we have been repeating is to find that franchise QB. otherwise we will waste another 13 years…
Indy is drafting him. They have zero reasons not to, no matter what we try to sell ourselves. If it was us in that position with the aging injured QB (think Marino) and the opportunity to draft an elite prospect (perhaps Manning circa 1998?), we would not be thinking to ourselves, “hmm, let’s trade the sure-fire franchise QB for 2 more years of declining HOFer and a bunch of middle round picks that will fail.” So he’s gone.
RG3 is going to be very good. I feel like he has every chance to be better than Luck. He’s the guy I want.
I’m already resigned to drafting some high-motor Koa Misi asshole at pick 9 (we’re gonna pick 9, you KNOW Ross isn’t going with tails in that coin flip, and we all know tails never fails). I’m expecting Riley Reiff
If they said .. hey you want this pick.. you need to give us Jake Long … Done… sign the deal. get it done…. I wouldn’t lead off with that though… I would rather give up picks given the choice… but if that is the only way it gets done … get us our Franchise… yes please.
and working from there. I’d much rather “only” give up Long and keep all the draft picks, because that is how you stock up with cheap, young talent to go after championships. And it’s been proven that you can compete and win for a long period of time without a franchise tackle, as long as you have a Franchise QB. So I have absolutely no problems trading Long.
I would start with some veteran/depth players and a couple picks. First offer is swap 1st’s, add in next year’s 2nd, YBell and Randy Starks. Then we are working from there.
It has been 13 years since we have had a franchise QB. I can’t take much more… If we don’t get one this year, I can not continue to watch this team. I will not be going to any games if we don’t get a franchise QB. I can’t watch them on TV. It hurts too much.
how do we assure ourselves that we get that franchise guy? Franchise QBs don’t hit free agency very often. And while occasionally you can find them in later rounds, it is a freak occurence. Most of them are picked in the first round. The really good ones… well everyone knows they are really good. The only other way to get a franchise QB is to be completely worthless for an entire year.. then get the 1st pick in the draft.
how many 2nd round picks have we bled for the past 10 years to not get that guy. If there is a guy and we KNOW he is the answer… stop being a puss and go get the guy.
trade down, and sure up the o-line then go after brandon weeden, he’ s a little older, but i think he could start right away, plus we still have moore for another year
alright boys Im hitting the bed, the is someone walking in front of my house I going to shoot them and got to bed, Alpha if its you speak up or your be late for work tomorrow
I don’t understand why fans treat him as the ONLY good LT in the whole league. They make it like if we didn’t have him, Colombo is the only other option in the whole NFL to play LT. It’s either Jake, or a banana peel. It’s the failure of logic there that keeps fans from actually thinking about trading Jake and the benefit of getting the best QB prospect in decades for the price of one single player
not saying that ... but he is a rare talent at that position...
I am not … REPEAT… I am not saying that I wouldn’t sign up for trading Long and whatever else it took to get Luck… I just would rather give away my draft picks first… But I can understand the logic of wanting to keep the team stocked with young cheap players. I am just not sure if we would still take the cap hit if we traded Long anyway.
ok .. so here are some positives I was thinking about McCoy...
1. he is 39
2. he was the offensive coordinator for a team that took Tim Tebow to the playoffs and beat Pittsburg.
3. He didn’t cry that he didn’t have a real QB.. he tailored an offense and made it work for Tim Tebow…. and was successful!
1. He was drafted in the 7th round.
2. He has 2 games under his belt.
3. He threw the ball 44 times to a 15-1 team with VERY talented receivers. He completed 31.
4. One of those passes was a dump off to Ryan Grant that went for 80 yards. Not exactly the result of the QB there … was it? I am sure you could find a few more instances where those receivers made plays. I saw a few where the throws were behind receivers and could have just as easily been picked off.
Opps days befor the coach loses his son put all that together & there was such a small rub that they didn't even notic there rythum change had a different gate to it!

I said stick with Moore and trade down to solidfy the OL
but if we do this during FA then I would of gone with trade down for the next QB on the chart.
Is there any FA QB’s this yr. that is worth looking at other than Flynn?

No

Moore
Give Moore a year with being “the guy” in the offseason, draft a QB in the 3-5th round range (Wheeden?), and sign an experienced back-up like Jason Campbell or Kyle Orten to compete with Moore.

Nicks from what I gather there is going to be a bidding war for.
phinfansc1980 - January 18, 2012
We will be in it
He will allow Incognitus to move to RG and then Jerry/Murtha/rookie can handle the RT spot and our line is set.
The Earl - January 18, 2012
Think about this though
While the high bidders are occupied with Nicks, we might be able to snag Grubbs before theres a war on him

that is before Grubbs get a new contract from Atlanta first

Of all the teams at the bottom of the draft... we are in the best position to trade away picks..
We need the least. We really are lacking one position that can be filled at the top of the draft. Can you honestly tell me that if we offer 2 full drafts that would not be enticing to a team like the Colts that already have a franchise QB and desperately need to rebuild? Plus if we give them our 1st round pick next year they could always trade their 2 1s and get Barkley next year, without alienating the guy that was their entire franchise for the past 14 years.
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
Interesting.
Alpha6 - January 18, 2012
Offering two full drafts is too much
The Earl - January 18, 2012
for Luck?
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
I don't think it would take 2 full drafts to move up that high
We would have to give up a big time player. Trading away 2 full years of drafts would seriously damage your franchise, especially if Luck was a bust. One draft would be acceptable, but two is too much. Especially since we could get a QB in the 2013 draft.
The Earl - January 18, 2012
what do we need?
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
they said that about Matty Ice
21Dave - January 18, 2012
and he has done nothing, He is not a leader,
21Dave - January 18, 2012
You could cripple the franchise by giving away that many picks
or you could trade Jake Long, a 2nd rounder for the #1 overall pick this year and a 2nd rounder next year. That would be more than enough.
Or you could trade down this year, pick up a 1st rounder next year and go all in for Barkley, who is an elite prospect.
The Earl - January 18, 2012
No arm though
21Dave - January 18, 2012
He's got enough arm to make all the NFL throws
The Earl - January 18, 2012
He has a CP10 arm
21Dave - January 18, 2012
lol....
Alpha6 - January 18, 2012
who has a CP10 arm?
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
Barkley
21Dave - January 18, 2012
No arm?
What is he, an amputee?
That guy can throw cirlces around half the nfl QBs….
Alpha6 - January 18, 2012
... but RGIII is on par with the top ten QBs....
Alpha6 - January 18, 2012
one arm he would only be able to through in circles
21Dave - January 18, 2012
lol....
Alpha6 - January 18, 2012
cripple the franchise?
Like we are crippled now by NOT HAVING A FRANCHISE QB???? How about all the picks that we used but wasted anyway? Pat White, Patrick Turner, Donald Thomas, etc etc etc. Ted Ginn Jr(+family). How about 2nd round picks we have given for another team’s backup hoping that he was really a franchise QB.. only to find out.. he was in fact.. just a backup
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
Why on earth would you trade Jake Long?
To keep a 1st round pick? really? A proven guy you are trading for a guy that could be bagging groceries in a year? I would rather trade draft picks than proven guys. No way I trade Jake Long. If he has one year left and I don’t think we have the cap to resign him.. then maybe I consider letting him go for a high 1st round pick… and a 2nd.
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
So you are willing to trade away two drafts for a guy that could be bagging groceries in a year...
but not willing to trade Jake Long? If you trade him, then you can use your first rounder in 2013 to find… a left tackle. In my scenario, you could draft Luck and find another LT in this draft.
There is no upside to trading away two drafts for an unsure thing. If the player is worth trading two drafts for, then he’s worth trading Jake Long for. We can find a good LT this draft, or even another draft.
The Earl - January 18, 2012
lmao
Alpha6 - January 18, 2012
you aren't going to just go out and find a Pro Bowl LT...
Sorry … we got a rare find there. There have been 3 drafts since we drafted Jake… and no LTs of his caliber.
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
basically what you are saying is that Jake Long is worth more than Andrew Luck
and at this point, I’d agree because Luck is unproven.
The Earl - January 18, 2012
No .... I am not saying that ..
I am saying Jake Long is worth 2 1st round picks for me…If it is Long or Luck… give me Luck … get it done…
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
I don't think that is what is going to happen...
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
If you are willing to do anything, then trading Long should be considered
If we could trade Long in a deal and still draft Luck and Martin or Reiff to be LT, we’d be just fine. And if one or both of them bust, then we are no worse off than what we are now.
The Earl - January 18, 2012
or
a third option.. Trade up to #2 or #3 and get Griffin, and avoid having to trade 2 full drafts or Jake Long
Little Nicky 21 - January 18, 2012
Indubitably
The Earl - January 18, 2012
You just lost half the folks with that word... lol
Alpha6 - January 18, 2012
I am good with either QB...
I think the only way to get out of this same crappy season we have been repeating is to find that franchise QB. otherwise we will waste another 13 years…
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
Do you remember the movie Groundhog Day?
I am at the point where he wakes up… goes to the tub with the toaster and calls it a day…
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
I don't see any way to get Luck
Indy is drafting him. They have zero reasons not to, no matter what we try to sell ourselves. If it was us in that position with the aging injured QB (think Marino) and the opportunity to draft an elite prospect (perhaps Manning circa 1998?), we would not be thinking to ourselves, “hmm, let’s trade the sure-fire franchise QB for 2 more years of declining HOFer and a bunch of middle round picks that will fail.” So he’s gone.
RG3 is going to be very good. I feel like he has every chance to be better than Luck. He’s the guy I want.
Little Nicky 21 - January 18, 2012
I would love either guy...
I just don’t want to be told that they didn’t believe in RG3 … so they got us NOTHING… that will piss me off…
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
lol
I don’t want to hear Ross or Ireland talk.. ever.
I’m already resigned to drafting some high-motor Koa Misi asshole at pick 9 (we’re gonna pick 9, you KNOW Ross isn’t going with tails in that coin flip, and we all know tails never fails). I’m expecting Riley Reiff
Little Nicky 21 - January 18, 2012
my reaction when that happens??
follow the link….
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
I wouldn't be against it...
If they said .. hey you want this pick.. you need to give us Jake Long … Done… sign the deal. get it done…. I wouldn’t lead off with that though… I would rather give up picks given the choice… but if that is the only way it gets done … get us our Franchise… yes please.
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
I'm starting with a pick swap and players
and working from there.
Little Nicky 21 - January 18, 2012
I'll give you that ... with the new CBA those players are really cheap....
Still hurts giving up Long … but if Mr. Ross went and traded Long away for Luck… I would be estatic….
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
We are getting close to critical mass here...
It has been 13 years since we have had a franchise QB. I can’t take much more… If we don’t get one this year, I can not continue to watch this team. I will not be going to any games if we don’t get a franchise QB. I can’t watch them on TV. It hurts too much.
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
aside from tanking for the entire season...
how do we assure ourselves that we get that franchise guy? Franchise QBs don’t hit free agency very often. And while occasionally you can find them in later rounds, it is a freak occurence. Most of them are picked in the first round. The really good ones… well everyone knows they are really good. The only other way to get a franchise QB is to be completely worthless for an entire year.. then get the 1st pick in the draft.
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
also...
how many 2nd round picks have we bled for the past 10 years to not get that guy. If there is a guy and we KNOW he is the answer… stop being a puss and go get the guy.
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
how many Super Bowls have the last 10 years of draft picks gotten us?
How many times have we been close>?
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
I would give up 2 first and Merling and Hartline to get the deal done
21Dave - January 18, 2012
So we signed Yu Darvish today! Next Prince Fielder?
texascowpunk - January 18, 2012
you think, he will be in LA
21Dave - January 18, 2012
Hes not talking to LA. His people were in town meeting with the Rangers this last weekend.
texascowpunk - January 18, 2012
Miami
21Dave - January 18, 2012
Hell it dont matter he can play first just as bad as anyone out there, but he can hit the shit out it
21Dave - January 18, 2012
I am personally just fine with Moreland at first. The kid has great defense and hits for average and power.
Hes not going to put up Fielder numbers but his defense is great and hes a shit load cheaper.
texascowpunk - January 18, 2012
yup, give me a good D player on the corners that will get me 25-30 or less, but have great D
I will take it over a guy that bats 257 with 47 HR and 17 errors. I want Batting avg. and a good stick nothing great just a good and solid D
21Dave - January 18, 2012
Yeah we have that now. And Josh is as good an outfielder as there is.
Besides who else has the arm to gun down a runner at home from deep center field like he can?
texascowpunk - January 18, 2012
HUge fan of Josh, my style of player

Also had to ID Rusty Greer to the stupid security guy.
texascowpunk - January 18, 2012

21Dave - January 18, 2012
Yeah. Amazing actually. How many people come back from heroin to be a major
sports MVP?
texascowpunk - January 18, 2012
then I would have a firesale on about 8 players to get spots back
21Dave - January 18, 2012
I would trade offCarey,Hartline,Pruitt,Slanton,Clemons,Culver,Mitchell, Trusnik and Spitler
yes our SP would take a big hit, but it was not that great anyways. use those picks in combo to get back up in next years draft.
21Dave - January 18, 2012
you would trade Trusnick?
I would give him away as an incentive for the Jets to take Columbo…
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
We would have to give away Bush for someone to take Colombo
21Dave - January 18, 2012

Re: Long
I don’t understand why fans treat him as the ONLY good LT in the whole league.
Little Nicky 21 - January 18, 2012
Is that the discussion now? Long for Indy's 1?
kmb8488 - January 18, 2012
I have no idea if it's even in play
just a hypothetical
Little Nicky 21 - January 18, 2012
I wood trade #1's, BM, Starks, Gates & maybe a #2 next year Posible 5 starters!
wild zion beaver - January 18, 2012
That's a pilaging
Alpha6 - January 18, 2012
is that all no discustion or what is it dignafide or what!
wild zion beaver - January 18, 2012
not saying that ... but he is a rare talent at that position...
Jason Scott_90 - January 18, 2012
No I'm not singling you out at all

Jason Scott_90 - January 19, 2012
on the flip!
wild zion beaver - January 19, 2012
ok .. so here are some positives I was thinking about McCoy...
1. he is 39
2. he was the offensive coordinator for a team that took Tim Tebow to the playoffs and beat Pittsburg.
3. He didn’t cry that he didn’t have a real QB.. he tailored an offense and made it work for Tim Tebow…. and was successful!
Jason Scott_90 - January 19, 2012
Check. Check. And check.
Alpha6 - January 19, 2012
loved watching that D
wild zion beaver - January 19, 2012
so catch all on the flipside!
wild zion beaver - January 19, 2012
Some things to consider about Matt Flynn..
Jason Scott_90 - January 19, 2012
Take into fact just one week practic with first teamers, also the team they were playing had um nothin to play for & not a real defense anyways!
wild zion beaver - January 19, 2012
Opps days befor the coach loses his son put all that together & there was such a small rub that they didn't even notic there rythum change had a different gate to it!
