The Miami Dolphins are continuing their search for a new head coach this week, with one of the bigger named assistant coaches currently the top target for the team. The New Orleans Saints lost to the San Francisco 49ers in Divisional playoffs this weekend, clearing the way for New Orleans offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael to interview for the Dolphins' vacant head coach position.
Carmichael has twice spurned advances from the Dolphins, but both of those were for an offensive coordinator position. Now, with the head coach job available, Carmichael will most likely take the phone call.
The Dolphins are expected to interview Carmichael sometime this week. He and his family are happy in New Orleans, so it may take a good showing from Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland to convince him to come to Miami. Or, it may take Ross' deep pockets.
Miami is also expected to meet with the Denver Broncos' Mike McCoy early this week. McCoy is interesting because he had to completely revamp his offensive scheme in mid season, running a traditional offense to start the season, and then switching to an option based offense with quarterback Tim Tebow. Despite only reaching 8-8 on the season, the Broncos won their division, and proceeded to beat the league's top defense in the Wildcard round of the playoffs, dispatching the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-23.

Rumors also state the Dolphins are interested in speaking to the Baltimore Ravens' defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano. However, the Ravens are still in the playoffs, heading to the AFC Championship game next weekend, meaning Miami would have to wait until next Monday at the earliest to speak to Pagano.
The Dolphins have interviewed their own interim head coach, Todd Bowles, the Chicago Bears' special teams coach Dave Toub, the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, and the Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. The team had offered the job to Jeff Fisher, who elected to head to the St. Louis Rams over the Dolphins.
Bowles is considered a candidate for the Oakland Raiders head coaching vacancy, and is currently under consideration by the Minnesota Vikings for their defensive coordinator position. The Dolphins are thought to want to keep Bowles in their new system, if not making him the head coach, possibly promoting him to defensive coordinator if current DC Mike Nolan is let go.
Meanwhile, Philbin is dealing with the loss of his son last week. Michael Philbin, Joe's 21-year old son, drowned in a Wisconsin river. Joe had been interviewed by the Dolphins the day before.
Carmichael took over as the play caller for the Saints earlier this year when head coach Sean Payton broke his leg on the sidelines. When the offense suddenly took off, Payton continued to allow Carmichael to call the plays - leading to quarterback Drew Brees breaking Dolphins' legend Dan Marino's single season passing yardage record.
The Dolphins are one of three teams still searching for a head coach, joining the Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This is what I like to hear! The Ravens DC seems like a intriguing option as well… anybody know anything more about him? His experience, interests, eye color?

Definitely intrigued by P. Car.....
wonder how he would use Reggie…..just random thought….
whataboutdafins - January 16, 2012
He would likely trade him for a 5th rounder.

Oh, wait. He already did that.

New list:
Three Excellent Candidates:
Pete Carmichael
Winston Moss
Chuck Pagano
BSerious72 - January 16, 2012
agree
I love moss and pagano… philbin does seem Nice to, otherwise I would keep bowles…
mavin12 - January 16, 2012 via Android app
I mean
carmichael seems Nice to, I also like philbin, but would understand if he needs some stability right now, and not throw himself out in a new big job
mavin12 - January 16, 2012 via Android app
I like Philbin, but like I said the timing is not good to promote him to a HC
It wouldn’t be fair for him and our team to give him so many responsibilities in what is still a time for mourning.
He belongs in GB with his family for now, he could be a great candidate in 2013 if he chooses to do so.
BSerious72 - January 16, 2012
For the next year; well we cant bring back (god forbid tony) wa we for one year promote "Nolan"?
wild zion beaver - January 16, 2012
Oh & will he go for that!
wild zion beaver - January 16, 2012
Bring in Carmichael...
Then bring in Brees. Finally we fixed the mistake that we made a few years ago.
Jason Scott_90 - January 16, 2012
First part is a good idea. The second part is what they call a pipe dream. Maybe because you have to have been sucking on a pipe to believe that could happen.
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
Lmao!
wild zion beaver - January 16, 2012
Lol
Really? Do you REALLY think Brees would leave the Saints for Miami? Not until he is over the hill and on his last leg. Then, we’ll be stuck in this vision of him and think we are getting a deal (see Culpepper).
PhinNomenol! - January 16, 2012 via Android app
Maybe we can trade Henne and a first rounder for Brees
New Orleans might be down for thatBSerious72 - January 16, 2012
This sounds like me!
wild zion beaver - January 16, 2012
Ok, if you were the Saints owner/GM...
Would you even THINK about this deal longer than the time it takes a laugh to raise up from the depths of your belly?
PhinNomenol! - January 16, 2012 via Android app
The grey box is a sarcasm box. :)
Agent J 78 - January 16, 2012
Sorry
I’m on an app, I don’t see a gray box. Plus, I’m also new, so I wouldn’t have known that was a sign for sarcasm.
However… now that seems pretty darn funny.
PhinNomenol! - January 16, 2012 via Android app
No worries :)
I still don’t know how to do it though (haven’t really tried to figure it out)
Agent J 78 - January 16, 2012
@like this@
but in the bodyPhinsphana - January 16, 2012
You're so cleverAgent J 78 - January 17, 2012
Hire Carmichael!!
I would be very happy if Miami can hire Carmichael. Miami should promote bowles to defensive coordinator if Nolan leaves.
tpl - January 16, 2012
I have little doubt that wouldn't do just that
PhinNomenol! - January 16, 2012 via Android app
Yeah Nolan is gone and keeping Bowles is a smart move. We need a change but some continuity is good as well.
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
I think many of the position coaches will stay the same.
No reason to have complete turnover.
PotM - January 16, 2012
New coaches usually want to bring their own people and since they are now the boss on that front they should be
allowed to do so.
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
Bowles
Bowles is going to Oakland. Carmichael would be great but Philbin may be able to bring Flynn along with him, however I would be surprised if Philbin makes any life changing moves for quite a while.
incognito1948 - January 16, 2012
Link or it did not happen……..
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
Carmichael + RGIII = Wet Dream
Perhaps he can use RGIII as a mobile Brees? Griffin is very accurate with a good deep ball and of course the kid has wheels. Could this combo produce a 40 TD season like Cam had?
BSerious72 - January 16, 2012
Most excelent!
Rec!
wild zion beaver - January 16, 2012
I'd dream that dream!
PhinNomenol! - January 16, 2012 via Android app
Hope the Football gods hear you brotha!!
Aleta - January 16, 2012
That combo would create havoc
Little Nicky 21 - January 16, 2012 via Android app
that combo would make me have to change my shorts after every week
sorry for graphic detail, but seriously…
BSerious72 - January 17, 2012
Go get Billick
He’d take it and has a better record than Fisher. I don’t buy the “he called one bad play in the 1 and 15 season” excuse.
da_bing - January 16, 2012
As has been repeated on this site about 500 times, Billick and Ross DO NOT GET ALONG!
Not going to happen.
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
then Ross needs to get over himself
The Phins need someone that is not going to be a “yes man”. Ross and Ireland can’t coach the team.
da_bing - January 16, 2012
Ross should hire Billick for a 2 year contract
just in case, but Billick is better than any other loser coach he’ll hire. Its starting to look like a Jim Zorn situation when Dan Snyder chose the worst possible head coach.
Jcrew1179 - January 16, 2012
Yeah there are two sides to that equation and one of them has nothing to do with Ross so............
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
Billionaires
don’t typically get over themselves
PhinNomenol! - January 16, 2012 via Android app
That one play cost him 40 million dollars
I don’t care how rich you are you remember someone costing you 40 million dollars
Phinsphana - January 16, 2012
Sheeeit.. I remember soneone costing me just $500 bucks....
lol
Alpha6 - January 16, 2012
Someone like Fisher will cost more in the long run.
da_bing - January 16, 2012
It's cool all these candidates are being interviewed but if we take too long they all be
gone…..Zimmer or Toubs are my top two….just gin shy with OC’s
MassFinFan65 - January 16, 2012
carmicheal
I think he would b better then most others, I would rather see philiban since it would make it eaiser yo try for Flynn, who I think is by far the most important thing to do and whoever is the next coach should make that the first thing. GET FLYNN no matter what, he will b the next Marino!!!
PAPHIN4ever - January 16, 2012 via mobile
ok tell me
how much coke did you snort
Phinsphana - January 16, 2012
More than college-age dan marino
Little Nicky 21 - January 16, 2012 via Android app
Bowles
I know I’m the minority, but out of the possible head coaching candidates we’re interviewing, I think I like Bowles the best. He seems like a players coach and someone this team will definately play their hearts out for. I wanted either Gruden, but seeing as they’re content with staying put, I think I like Bowles the most. The Dolphins did finish the season strong with him as an intrim head coach….
I hope Bowles is hired. I would happy. Carmicheal would be good as well. It seems like they could plug me into the system and I’d have 9.43 billion yards recieving and 5 trillion touchdowns…..as a practice squad player. But I still am partial to Bowles.
Jared Maier - January 16, 2012
i would like Bowles to take over as dc if nolan leaves
but I think Carmichael gets the head job. even though I still want Chud
Phinsphana - January 16, 2012
The problem with Bowles
In my opinion, is you learn what you see. He learned how to connect with the players under Sporano, and how to respect them. Not a whole lot on how to get them to play at a higher level. Not how to start a season ready to win. Not how to be aggressive throughout a game. Definitely not how to close out a close game. And likely, not little tips to manage game flow, time, manipulate the other team into making mistakes or how to outcoach the other team. That’s a concern for me with Bowles.
(that…. and the forthcoming BOWELS jokes as soon as he screws up)
PhinNomenol! - January 16, 2012 via Android app
Your theory lacks one dimension...
Bowles did start, and does have a SB ring…So obviously as a player he knows what it takes to win. He’s still relatively young (48) and still very unexperienced as a head coach, but IDK I like the guy for some reason. I guess I wouldn’t mind him at DC if Nolan leaves or is released or whatever. I just hope we find a way to keep him somehow, perferably (IMO), as a HC.
Jared Maier - January 17, 2012
I want to keep Nolan!
Whomever the Regime Hires i hope Nolan stays as DC.
The Defense is playing good but after watching NEW York yesterday The 4-3 looks good. Got have those DL….isn’t Osia U a free Agent…he would look good in Aqua and Orange!!
My question would Nolan adjust to that?
twinssdfan - January 16, 2012
apparently he wants to leave
he already interviewed with the Falcons
Phinsphana - January 16, 2012
too bad..i like him
but isn’t he under a contract? so doesn’t the New H.C. decide who stays and goes?
I don’t know!
twinssdfan - January 16, 2012
ask mosel not me
Phinsphana - January 16, 2012
musul.
Phinsphana - January 16, 2012
mosul
i really have trouble with his name
Phinsphana - January 16, 2012
Nolan’s contract with the Dolphins is renewable after each season, but solely at his boss’ discretion. Nolan has no power over whether or not he will return next year, but he doesn’t seem too worried about it. Read more: http://aol.sportingnews.com/nfl/s

Neo - January 16, 2012
I think it comes down to why would you force a guy to stay that does not want to stay?
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
Because he is good
Neo - January 16, 2012
Yeah and still.........
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
He is under contract
so I don’t think he is going anywhere, unless I new HC wants him to leave
Neo - January 16, 2012
I don't think Nolan has interviewed with anyone. A team has to get permission to interview Nolan.
An I’m not sure why people on this site keep saying Nolan wants to leave. No one can give a link to a story involving Nolan saying he wants out. The link below is from 30-days ago. Its say the opposite.

FinFanFromCA - January 17, 2012
Thanks
So there be a chance we may keep him plus a few other coaches.
Thanks—Fellow Dolphin Fans!!
twinssdfan - January 16, 2012
Operation FIN-ish him.
I have a plan. It may work but, we can get the coach we want.
It’s called Operation FIN
Let’s take a consensus vote.
Whoever wins we get.
Phase 1, get a hacker to crack themiamidolphins.com website.
And change the headline to Dolphins hire Pete Carmichael as HC.
Phase 2: have all fans call Ross’ headquarters for his Billion dollar real estate company.
And ask for Ross (bug) him that his fans want Pete Jr.
Call Phins main office and ireland tell him to get Pete jr. In here asap.
Phase 3 get twitter followers to trend dolphins and ross.and forward Ross’ # and have them call non stop till he hires pete jr.
Fin: and then BAM we have our new HC hired.
And if that doesn’t work we’ll make up a rumor about Ireland and his gay lover.
Stats407 - January 16, 2012 via mobile
sounds like a plan!
soffici - January 16, 2012
I really want to do it.
That would make national news and we get the guy we want.
Stats407 - January 16, 2012 via mobile
You do know of a place called prison right
Btw if we did this the police would look to fansites like this. And yes the police would get involved and Phinsphana don’t do jail.
