The New Orleans Saints lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional round of the NFL Playoffs today, and that's good news for the Miami Dolphins. In a week that saw the Dolphins lose their top coaching candidate, Jeff Fisher, to the St. Louis Rams, Miami is putting more hooks in the water, and hoping to catch a new lead candidate.
Which brings us to the Saints loss. With the team eliminated from the playoffs, the Dolphins are free to start asking for permission to speak to New Orleans assistants and start setting up interviews. Immediately, that means Pete Carmichael, Jr., the Saints' offensive coordinator, is now available. The Dolphins reportedly have had Carmichael on their radar, and can now start making moves to bring the coach to Miami - even if it's just for an interview.
As was reported yesterday, the Dolphins are also looking to interview Mike McCoy, the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator who, like Carmichael, was bounced from the playoffs yesterday. However, with the miserable showing the Broncos had in their 45-10 loss to the New England Patriots, question about the Dolphins' continued desire to meet with McCoy are sure to be raised.
Yesterday, the Dolphins reportedly conducted an interview; however, no name has been announced, formally by the team or informally through leaks. Speculation placed Dave Toub, the special teams coach for the Chicago Bears, in line for a second interview with the team, but nothing has been confirmed.

The Dolphins are also thought to be planning a second interview for Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
Miami has already interview interim head coach Todd Bowles and Green Bay Packers Joe Philbin, along with Toub and Zimmer. The team is believed to have interest in Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano as well, but cannot approach him until the Ravens are eliminated from the playorrs, or the week before the Super Bowl, should the team make it that far. Baltimore hosts the Divisional Playoff game with the Houston Texans later today.
One of the top candidates, from a fan view point, has yet to be mentioned as a possible candidate for the team. Rob Chudzinski, the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, is a popular name among fans and media speculation, but no reports of any interest from the Dolphins, or contact with the Panthers, have been made.
The Dolphins are planning to continue to interview possible head coaches until they exhaust their list., before either hiring one of the candidates, or starting a second round of interviews with the top contenders.

What's with the secrecy?
Sometimes this franchise just pisses me off.
Farorefox - January 15, 2012 via mobile
because they haven't said who they are interviewing, you ate pissed off?
The team doesn’t announce interviews until they are over. Either this guy is still being interviewed today, or the data was wrong and no one was interviewed. It’s okay, either way.

LOL Phins fans are pissed off no matter what. I swear that if we win the SB someone for sure will find a reason to still bitch.
texascowpunk - January 16, 2012
You also have to remember
The candidate, too, has to agree to have his name released. Perhaps he does not want it publicly known that he interviewed for his own personal reasons.
PhinNomenol! - January 15, 2012 via Android app
Miami should definately interview New Orleans offensive coordinator. I hope Miami doesn’t interview the broncos offensive coordinator. The ran the ball too much of the time. Perhaps the reason is tim tebow, but you still have to have a balanced offense. And when the pats were all up at the line tebow should have audibled into a pass.
tpl - January 15, 2012
You have to play to the strength of your offense.
Yes, they were getting trounced by halftime. But you have to do what you can with what you have available. Especially down Decker, the Broncos were in a tough situation. I parallel that with when Phins were in the playoffs with Chad P and suddenly we started trying to throw bombs downfield. That was not our strength and we got away from our gameplan and we lost.
The reason T-Bones and the Broncs were tossing it like wild last week was the Saints were stacking the box, leaving a lot of favorable 1 on 1 situations. Even then, they still ran alot to keep in the mindset that they would run until opportunity arose to hit a bomb downfield. You can’t fault u the guy for playing to his strengths and taking his shots WHEN AVAILABLE, especially given Tebow’s strengths and obvious weaknesses as well as the Broncos as a whole.

Not the Saints, I meant the Steelers lol. Still got that game from yesterday on my mind (the good one lol).

we want Chud!
Kdog92 - January 15, 2012
Woof...
We want Taub or Carmichael…
Alpha6 - January 15, 2012
I really want to see an offensive minded head coach...
With the sense to realize that we need to draft more players from UM.
We could have had Ray Lewis instead of Daryl Gardener(Baylor), who was a good player for us… But Ray Lewis is still making an impact on the team that drafted him. We could have had Reggie Wayne instead of Jamar Fletcher(Wisconsin). We also could have had Drew Brees that year.. but that is kinda off the subject. We could have had Vince Wilfork instead of Vernon Carey(Miami). While Vern has been a good piece for us, we would have been better off having Wilfork. We picked Ronnie Brown(Auburn) instead of Antrelle Rolle. We picked Matt Roth(Iowa) instead of Frank Gore. We picked Ted Ginn Jr. instead of Brandon Merriweather, Jon Beason, and Greg Olsen. We picked John Jerry instead of Jimmy Graham.
Now I am not really for picking any of those guys in the 1st round, but if a guy like Lamar Miller, Brandon Washington, Tommy Streeter, Marcus Forston, or Sean Spence is available in the later rounds and we pick someone from Hampton, only to see the Patriots grab them with the next pick… I am going to lose it.
Jason Scott_90 - January 15, 2012
My Criteria for a head coach would then be...
Before anything get a QB. If not everything the head coach does is meaningless. Do not tell me that Moore is the answer. I do not have a problem with him going into this season as the starter, but we need some competition for him either in the 1st round of the draft, or in free agency.
1.) He must be offensively minded.
2.) He must be able to put together a good staff.
3.) He must be able to realize that there is a lot of talent down here in Miami and he must be more willing to draft a late round guy from Miami with a lot of talent that hasn’t been realized than someone from Hampton with a lot of upside.
Jason Scott_90 - January 15, 2012
Staff is more important than anything else at this point.
Coaching matters in the NFL. Getting a good staff matters. Fisher would have brought a good, experienced staff with him. I am not sure if any of these other guys staff will be as good as the one that Fisher would have brought.
ct1361 - January 15, 2012
we didn't get Fisher...
Move on… If we can get Billick I would be happy also… He might even keep Daboll and Nolan, which would mean we would have 3 years in the same defense and 2 years in the same offense…. that would be huge.
Jason Scott_90 - January 15, 2012
Oh .. I'm over not getting Fisher. It's time to move on. But one of the things that doesn't get mentioned is the staff a HC brings.
Coaching staffs are important. One of the reasons why you want an experienced coach is because they will most likely bring an experienced staff. Getting the staff right is probably the most important first step for a coach.
One of the reasons that Sparano failed, IMO, is that his staff was inexperienced and not very well put together. Now the Phins are going to ask a first time HC to put together a coaching staff which is probably something that they have NEVER done before. That is why it is so critical to get this right.
ct1361 - January 15, 2012
we definitely don't want this...

Puzzled why Chud has yet to be mentioned
Only thing I can think of is that Ireland wants a lesser personality from a control standpoint. Maybe Chudzinski is a guy who wants to run his own team, as any coach should be able to….. just sayin’.
CanT0o - January 15, 2012
I thought I read somewhere that this FO didn't think Chud was ready to be a HC.
They interviewed him last year for the OC position and I guess didn’t leave a very good impression.
ct1361 - January 15, 2012
That was last week
They also said they wanted a coach with experience and “Open up the Offense”
This may be a blessing is disguise. Hpwever, if they get another Defensive minded Coach, it will be another disaster. Nolan is fine. Why even look at Zimmer.
IMHO, the major problems were Henne and Sparano. They are gone. In defense of J Ireland, all the moves he made last year seem to be pretty good. I am trying to be optomistic. However, given the recent history of PR disasters, this team is VERY CLOSE to losing a lot of the remaining fans. Ross best get it right this time because who wants to spend several thousand dollars watching ANOTHER losing season!!
DAVEBUCK - January 15, 2012
Couldn't agree more DAVEBUCK!! Well Said!! Rec'd!
From what I have seen and heard about Chud, I would give him a shot. But his name is purposely missing from the lists of candidates for Miami, yet known on the list of other vacancies. Someone likes him, it just doesn’t seem the Dolphins do.
ct1361 - January 15, 2012
Wow, I thought Miami fans weren't great fans, but that brings it to a new level.
PotM - January 15, 2012
I believe I read somewhere here that the team considers him (Chud) as not ready for a HC position.

That's what I read somewhere. See comment above.

Alpha6 - January 15, 2012
None of us really know much about these guys.
We haven’t see them in the locker room or at Practice or in the meeting rooms. All we can do is judge based on performance which shouldn’t be the first and only selection criteria. It’s all about experience and the amount of respect they command. Respect helps them land a strong supporting staff. So I have no idea who fits the bill the most, but from what I’ve heard, Dave Toub should be highly considered. Most people are thinking it’s ridiculous to consider a special teams coordinator but also realize John Harbaugh was a special teams coordinator for many years before taking the leap to head coach. Toub has been in some form of a coachign role since 1986 so he knows what he’s doing. I’m not saying pick him, but is my top choice based solely on what I’ve read, and am glad the Phins are giving him strong consideration.
Drumzan - January 15, 2012
Did I miss something?
I keep hearing Chip Kelly being thrown around. Is this based on anything that has actually been said, or just wishful thinking? Honest question, not trolling.
NJ13 - January 15, 2012
yes its wishful thinking, just like Dan Marino will come and lead us to the promisedland..P.s. I hate the trashy jets, just sayin IMO
PAPHIN4ever - January 15, 2012 via mobile
I would like to see us seriously consider Philbin, Carmichael, and Winston Moss...
all three are pretty offensive minded (especially the first 2) and have had a ton of recent success. Chud is also a good option, but like I have said, I would prefer a candidate coming straight out of a very successful origination ready to instill some of that into our organization
#1Heatfan - January 15, 2012

#1Heatfan - January 15, 2012
Charmichael would be great if he came with
Brees and Jimmy Graham …… i guess Bush can offset Sproles ….. but my point is sometimes players make assistants look better than what they really might be.
scrappy the wildcat - January 16, 2012
no chip!
those kind of offenses may work in college, but they don’t work in the nfl. i.e. steve spurrier. just find a guy with alot of heart who the players will follow.
yappy007 - January 15, 2012
What about new england and new orleans?
They run mostly spread concepts in their passing games. What about Denver? They ran a spread option run game all the way to the second round with a QB that can’t throw. What about Carolina? They had some success running zone read option with Newton.
The Packers run a west coast style passing game from the shotgun, which is what many college spread offenses are based on.
I think it’s foolish to say it’s a gimmick and won’t work when it already does..
Little Nicky 21 - January 15, 2012 via Android app
I will take this one step further.
You know what we would have called the Packers and Pats offense 20+ years ago? We would have said it is a variation of the Run and Shoot. Basically the Run and Shoot would spread out the formation (without a fullback) and have a couple of option routes run by the WR’s with a vertical threat. That is what the Packers and Pats run except in a shotgun instead of under center.
I remember pundits saying that offense would never work in the NFL. But you change the name of the offense to “Spread” instead of “Run and Shoot” and it becomes OK i guess..
I remember when pundits said Bill Walsh’s offense (what we now call the West Coast Offense), the short passing game offense, would never work in the NFL. I guess they were wrong too.
I think we are seeing a brand new offense emerge in the NFL right before our eyes. Offenses with very athletic QB’s that can run and throw that are going to stress defenses in a completely new way. I also think some of these “old school” coaches are going to be left behind because they are not going to understand how to defend it or adapt it into their offense.
This is the reason why I so want RGIII. He and guys like him are the future of the position. It’s about time Miami had one of those guys at the position.
ct1361 - January 15, 2012
Just wondering...
There has been little or no mention of Marty Schottenheimer as a coaching candidate. He has a career record of 200-126-1 (That’s 61% folks). Everywhere he has gone, he has found some form of success. He was let go too early in DC, and we all know he was let go too early in SD.
Last year in the UFL he won the UFL championship with a 1st year team (yeah yeah, it’s the UFL, but it still demonstrates his coaching talent). The man has a hunger to coach (just like the guy we just lost out on). He has experience. He has a track record of success.
For those of you who are big on the Chud bandwagon I should remind you that Chud is a product of the elder Schottenheimer.
Other notables include…
Cam Cameron (not a good HC but a great OC)
Bill Cowher (I think we like this guy)
Herm Edwards (you play to win the game)
Tony Dungy (nuff said)
Marvin Lewis (through Cowher)
Ken Wisenhunt (through Cowher)
Lovie Smith (through Dungy)
Rod Marinelli (through Dungy)
Mike Tomlin (through Dungy)
I’m no expert, but there are some huge names on that tree. Some we have coveted…
With all that being said, I welcome your comments.
VA_Phins_Fan - January 15, 2012
I want Schottenheimer too, but I'll tell you why they are not interested.
I am really scared that they are screwing this up AGAIN and going to set this franchise back 3 or 4 years. Lets look at some of the candidates:
Toub – Many years as a Special Teams Coordinator. Huh? never responsible for calling plays on offense or defense.
Philbin – Lifetime Offensive Line Coach. Lately been OL coach and Offensive Coordinator who DOESN’T call the plays. Sounds a lot like Tony Sparano’s pedigree to me. What did Einstein say? Keep doing the same thing and expect to get a different outcome is the definition of insanity.
Zimmer – Dallas Cowboy connection with Ireland. This practically guarantees him the job if past history is any indication. If we’re going to give the job to a Defensive Coordinator, why not give it to Nolan who at least has been a Head Coach before?
I’m really trying to remain aloof from this process, as it is physically painful to me to watch systematically destroy this team that I have rooted for for 42 years.
dab415217 - January 15, 2012

Chip Kelly Nay Sayers...
We need an offensive mind as a head coach. The only reason he uses the spread offense is because that is what works in college. He has already said he is not married to one kind of style. If he had the personell to run the power-I, he would do it. Look…more and more teams are adapting to what works from college to the pros. Look at what New England does every week with personell they have. Chip Kelly probably has the highest football IQ of any candidate and is a great game-day coach. He would also have the stature to get quality coaches around him. Imagine this guy coaching our team with RG3! Check out the link:

Hey Mosul
Who would you like to see as a head coach next season? Make a prediction as to who you think will actually end up as the HC.Is this out of the question for you because of possible conflicts with your contacts or employer.I have seen you make predictions on how a game will be played lets hear YOUR opinion on who they should get.If you have already posted it,my bad can you repost?

I can remember back when we were in the lead over NEW ENGLAND, we then made a few drop errors, the WR's get up run back to the huddle!
I was thinking short term memerory loss, just like when they make such a great pass-catch they get up like nuthyin special has happend, another day at the office. But then the almighty great Deion Sanders came onto the sceen. Every time he touched the ball he might have a great return of a punt or kickoff. he couldn’t just return back to his side of the field. he had to reinvent himself. don’t like that flash in the pan stuff.
