Miami Dolphins Coaching Candidates

With Jeff Fisher out of the Miami Dolphins' hunt for a new head coach, it's time for the Dolphins to look elsewhere to find the right man for the job. Maybe the most amazing part of the Jeff Fisher saga is how polarizing a figure he became. Before his decision there were posts comments discussing how horrible a hire he would be, and how he would lead the Dolphins through another 3-5 years of mediocrity. Fisher only had six winning seasons in his 16 with the Tennessee Titans.

Now that Fisher has spurned the Dolphins for the Rams, there are posts and comments explaining how the team will now face 3-5 years of mediocrity because they couldn't land Fisher.

Either way, Miami is on to the next candidate, with a "mystery" interview today. Speculation is the unknown person heading to Miami today is actually Chicago Bears special teams coach Dave Toub returning for a second interview. Toub has the early lead as the top candidate for Miami, although owner Stephen Ross did state yesterday that the team plans to interview candidates still in the playoffs

Star-divide

Miami has also interviewed their interim head coach Todd Bowles, Green Bay Packers Joe Philbin, and Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

So, today, it's time to look at whom I would like to see the Dolphins interview over the course of this search. This is not the list of guys I would like the Dolphins to hire. It's a list of guys I would like to see Miami interview.

In no particular order:

  • Rob Chudzinski, Offensive Coordinator, Carolina Panthers
  • Pete Carmichael, Jr., Offensive Coordinator, New Orleans Saints
  • Marty Schottenheimer, Head Coach, Virginia Destroyers (UFL)
  • Jim Fassel, Head Coach, Las Vegas Locomotives (UFL)
  • Winston Moss, Assistant Head Coach, Green Bay Packers
  • Rick Dennison, Offensive Coordinator, Houston Texans
  • Gary Patterson, Head Coach, TCU
  • June Jones, Head Coach, SMU
  • Gene Chizik, Head Coach, Auburn University
  • Chip Kelly, Head Coach, University of Oregon
  • Mike Gundy, Head Coach, Oklahoma State
  • Greg Schiano, Head Coach, Rutgers
  • Mike Nolan, Defensive Coordinator, Miami Dolphins
  • Dennis Allen, Defensive Coordinator, Denver Broncos
  • Chad Pennington (Thanks to Matty I for this one - I like it)

Who else do you think could or should get an interview. The Dolphins should look everywhere to find the right guy. There isn't a time table for this. The team does not have to worry about recruiting starting, and they have to wait until at least the week before Super Bowl if any of the potential candidates make it that far. Why not start interviewing as many people, with as many different backgrounds, as possible? Find the guy who crushed the interview, and you may have found your guy.

Other than fuel for the helicopter, what does an interview really cost the team?

Interesting List

I would be interested to see what June Jones could do, but he runs an offense that is FAR different from the conventional NFL offense, and I’m not sure if it would work.

Gene Chizik is another interesting choice if you want to take a coach from the college ranks. Auburn is ran a lot like a Pro team anyways, but what worries me is how he hasn’t been able to keep a consistent level of excellence in college football.

Fassel and Schottenheimer, no thanks. Fassel had his chances and never accomplished anything, and Schottenheimer was consistently barely above average.

Pennington honestly is an interesting choice, but I would like to see him start with a team as a QB Coach and work his way up. You can’t just go from player to head coach, far too many different nuances to learn on the way up.

Mike Gundy I really like. He’s done a great job at Oklahoma State, and he’s done it by blazing his own path and creating his own identity, rather then relying on the people above him in a “coaching tree.” I’d like to see what he could do in the NFL for sure.

Mike Nolan needs to stay at DC for us, and I’ve always thought Greg Schiano was very overrated. He’s the type of coach that relies on emotions to win games, and that doesn’t work in the Pros as well as it does in college.

The rest I don’t know enough about to comment on, but it’s definitely an interesting list.

Marty Shottenheimer has a 200-126 record in his career. I know he has struggled a little in the playoffs but he is better than anything we have had here in the past 11 years. He is not average. He is a good coach

I do agree though that Mike Gundy would make for an intriguing hire

Ray Horton

Defensive coordinator from Arizona. This guy killed the interview with the Rams before Fisher made his choice. In fact, after the Horton interview, which was the first one after they interviewed Fisher, there was speculation that the Rams would be happy to take Horton if Fisher came to Miami.

Go Dolphins.

Winston Moss FTW
nice list

I wonder why no one ia talking about Vic Fangio the 49ers D coordinator. I know they have talent but wow one of the best defenses I’ve seen in a long time

Didn't see Perry Fewell on that list

I think he’s a good candidate for us. Defensive-minded, very aggressive and creative, and has seen first-hand with the Giants how important it is to a) have a Franchise QB, and b) rush the passer. He also has experience as a defensive coordinator and interim head coach in this division with the Bills.
Hiring him could allow us to keep Daboll for some offensive stability, or hire a young up-and-comer and leave him alone with the offense.

I agree Perry Fewell Should be on the list.

I think he would bring in his own staff and bring with him the 4-3 defense. It is those reasons I do not like him as a choice, But he should be on the list.

Take away Soliai

And our defense actually fits the 4-3 well.

CP10?

Normally I would laugh at such a ludicrous idea. But I do find it intriguing because he’s shown great leadership and high football IQ.

I know

I didn’t think of him at all until I happened to see Matty’s tweet as I made this. Interesting idea. Don’t think he would get the job, but an assistant HC or QB job wouldn’t be out of the question.

What about Brian Billick?

…and I like the idea of getting CP10 into coaching with the Dolphins

CP10 definetly intrigues me

Who’s our current QB coach?

Karl Dorrell.

Do you remember the controversy last offseason when the changes were being made to the coaching staff at the positional level of moving Dorrell from Wide Receivers coach to Quarterbacks coach?

Some fans griped about the transition.

Interview Chip Kelly!

He is smart and a great game day coach. Let him put people around him, get RG3, and go to work!!!

no college coach!

we went down that road with nick the **ck saban. there are some that may be a good fit, but how long before they leave. find a coach for a long term! i still like bowles or even zimmer. the more i read on moss, he would be a nice choice too.

I don't think we can discount College coaches now....

I was a bit gutted Fisher didn’t come. Less to do with the fact that he’s a great coach. He’s not. He’s just a solid coach. Nothing more, nothing less. Probably not worth the $7 million / year. The thing that gutted me was that we didn’t have the pulling power to bring him in!

So we don’t have a rockstar coach. I’m fine with that. I really want us to get the guy that interviews the best. Winston Moss for me.

Hmmmm....

Don’t hire a college coach because Nick Saban burned us.

Don’t hire a former head coach because Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt burned us.

Don’t hire a coordinator because Cam Cameron burned us.

Don’t hire an assistant coach because Tony Sparano burned us.

Did I cover everyone?

we could hire a high school coach
How about Pitbull.
looks like you're the next head coach Mosul!
take anyone but zimmer please

(really think zimmer is on the shortlist now with fisher in st louis and the fins giving zimmer a 2nd interview)

as a bengals fan, i really dont want to lose zimmer.

CP10!!!

I love this idea.

Pennington

I’ll take Pennington as a QB coach any day of the week, but not a head coach…yet. Give the dude a few years to develop as an assistant to some degree.

Philbin or Carmichael

Prior to Joe Philbin’s recent tragedy I supported the idea of bringing him in as HC with the possibility of snagging Matt Flynn also. Sadly, Joe’s immediate future may be uncertain with his focus understandably on home and family at this time. My second personal choice would probably be Pete Carmichael…. anything to hype up our O.

I dont like anyone on the list

why not interview Greg Williams? In his first job as HC he did ok considering the bills FO didnt get him players, since then he has had the chance to work with Joe Gibbs in Washington and Payton in NO and won a SB…..I also like Todd Bowles more than anyone on that list…..

Schottenheimer

Shottenheimer was far above average, very successful, more succesful than Norv Turner has been in SD

CP10 as QB Coach

is brilliant.

Actually I will be glad when this reality show

is over so the real deal can start.Getting more playing talent ,that is more important for winning NEXT year than any coach. This is a team that is closer to the bottom than the top, unless Don Shula has already made a clone of himself and he is a coach IMO none of the candidates will make enough of an impact. What is interesting is the unknown give someone with no head coaching experience a shot and maybe the Fins will get a Harbaugh like result.Teams CAN over achieve but that will still mean an early exit from the playoffs like the CP lead Dolphins with the easy schedule that they had that year.

More concerned about who the offense & Defense coordinators will be

I really like what Daboll did this year with the team. And if he had another year I believe it would only be better. With help of Moore our receiver and running back went over 1000 yards with Dabolls’ play calling. When the new coach comes in I really hope we can keep Daboll and Nolan, but only if Nolan really wants to stay. Wouldn’t want to keep an unhappy coach. That’s why I really wish they would give the job to Bowles to keep the continuity on this team. I’d rather have something that’s working well, than the unknown.

Chud is defo not coming.. Dolphins have ruled him out.
NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I’m sad now

They might go or Zimmer. Uninspiring choice. But apparently had a great interview.
The Bengals' defense doesn't find him uninspiring.

He’s been doing a lot with a little for a while now. I’m very worried about losing him.

carmichael

He is way up on my list right now. Just look at his coaching history. Not so much the positions, but the quality of coaches he has worked with. Should have lots of experience to draw off of.

And we can now talk to him, go 9ers
let's hire Peyton Manning...

They say he’s already like a coach with pads so…

chuck pagano, defensive coordinator from baltimore
A Bright Happening

I was not on the Fisher train at all. Aside from his experience basically going through every possible happening in the NFL (besides an actual Super Bowl victory) there’s nothing good from him. 6 winning seasons out of the 17 seasons under his belt. A dysfunctional relationship with a QB I get that you didn’t want the guy in the 1st place but you have to adjust, your not always going to enjoy who you work with. Look at Harbaugh in San Fran I can he wasent on the Alex Smith bandwagon but ill tell you what he believed in him and said he’s the best dude for the job. Now to the serious talk the next HC. Im all in for Pete Carmichael from Orleans. Even tho he was not involved in the saints prolific offense years prior he’s called the last half of the season and New Orleans is averaging 45points a game. Yes they Have Drew Brees, yes they have Darren spelled, marques colston, Robert meacham, revert Henderson, jimmy graham, and a solid line but a great coach can either coach good players or coach good players into GREAT players. I believe Carmichael is that coach. He’s seen first and foremost what a HC/QB relationship is all about (Drew Brees, Sean Peyton) and he’s benefited in the development of Drew Bree’s rise to HOT status. I mentioned prior about New Orleans deep and talented roster, well let’s take a look at Miamis. QB: Matt Moore, probably the most debatable, you hate to love him because he’s not a star, he’s not the guy with all the hype, he’s not the guy people want to root for, he’s not the top draft prospect. He’s the “fill-in” for the next. My personal onion is we see what this year is about. I wanted Luck more than anyone, however its almost impossible to get him so im looking at tooling up trading picks this year for next years star Matt Barkley if Matt Moore doesn’t work out. RB/WR/TE/FB: Reggie Bush- Need I say anything his production, work ethic, experience, attitude, and leadership speak volume im waiting for his extension;], Daniel Thomas- from injuries and Reggies rise he lost production however this one two punch is something to wrecken with it reminds me of new orleans with P. Thomas/ M. Ingram/ C. Ivory/ and last but not least D. Sproles. We may not be that deep but you add a guy like lamichael james in the draft and things could be scary. Brandon Marshal- My favorite Reciever idc what ppl say about his disorder or his inability to catch the ball, simply put the dude is a grinder his name fits him “The Beast” he’ll get you the extra yards, go across the middle, and make the unbelievable catch (just ask Terrence Newman ;]) davon bess- one of the most underrated underneath men he’s quick, agile, tough, sure handed, and humble enough said. Brian hartline- the circus catcher with balarina type footwork he’s unnapreciated, underrated and still works hard. Synonymous fasono- I personally don’t like him I know he’s sure handed and does well for the community but I feel that his late surge was due to defense leaving him alone not really fearing him, im lobbying for Dwayne Allen in the draft he’s jermichael finley 2.0. Charles Clay- this guy is a combination of dallas clark, vernon davis, and chris volley he does it all and plays at such a high level he was a true steal in the draft thank you (Jeff Ireland) your production as primary decision caller for your first year was excellent (Reggie Bush, Kevin Burnett via free agency. Mike pouncey, Daniel Thomas, Charles Clay, and Jimmy Wilson via draft that’s 4 players out of there 6 that have played very well some may end up as pro bowler and don’t discount clyde gates, I believe he just got his feet wet will see what he’s really about next year). All in all we have talent and im ready for the RISE. Let’s start with brining in Pete Carmichael!
